elude We knew at once, on that first day, that here was something new-an era of growth-and we desired to avail ourselves of the opportunity. We did not share the trust cmd confidence that it was so evident our teachers felt. We were unsure and faltering . . . but such an atmosphere was hard to suppress . . . it caught on . . . now we felt as a part of a whole striving toward a common goal to learn by doing and seeing . . . to profit from our surroundings. Our teachers sensed it, too. They saw their opportunity to learn from us . . . and they, too, have grown with us in these four eve.ntful years. We were trying to keep pace with a rushing world, for we knew those who allowed themselves to be swept aside would never regain step. We watched, at first with fear, the terror of war . . . . and then we attempted to help. We read . . . and listened . . . and absorbed. We learned to meet people and to cooperate with them. We achieved the satisfaction of doing and not merely standing by helplessly. We were aware of the great privilege of living in such momentous times. We were living history . . . the despair and hopelessness that so many others experienced could not efface our trusting confidence. The words democracy and tolerance took on new meanings for us . . . we found new interpretations for them as they applied to us . . . we accepted innovations with open, unprejudiced minds, and we found them wise. With the triumph of good over the greatest aggregation of evil the earth has ever experienced, we were brought face to face with the future . . . it troubled us. Had we the preparations to aid in the important task ahead? And so we prepared for it . . . we discussed and studied the problems of peace . . . for we knew that the responsi- bility for its permanence lay with us and our generation. Yes, in a sense, these past four years have not been a consummation of all learning, but a foreshadowing of lives of sincere dedication to our school, our country and our new world. Now we are facing the end of our careers in Bridgeton High School . . . but it is not the end . . . this is a beginning of a finer and better life to come . . . it does not mark the termination of our schooling. Whether we may further our education by attending schools of higher learning . . . or whether this marks the end of our formal education . . . We have not finished . . . for we shall extract to the fullest extent and at every opportunity, all that life has to offer us . , . we shall remember this: There is no finality-just an end of a phase and a PRELUDE to another.

EDICATION We, the Class of 1946, dedicate this book to our willing and capable leader, Miss Zelda Pineles. To her we turned for direction throughout our high school years, and to her we again turn as we leave. We always found her at our side, ready to give us the cue to begin something new or to put out a restraining hand when she thought restraint was in order. Now as we part, we realize she will no longer be at our side, but the impression she has made will stay with us as we go into the next movement of life's great concerto. We have recorded in this composition the activities and events ol the past four years. Throughout all of these can be seen the influence of the directing hand of Miss Pineles. She has constantly helped us to live up to our theme, Semper Altiusf' May we continue to strive to go Always Higher. 4 A I
