1978 SCOUT Bridger High School Bridger, Montana Volume XXXII This Annual Is Dedicated To The Memory Of DA VID LEE DOTSON April 19, 1960 October 1977 IN MEMORY OF DAVE He left shadows whenever he walked, his imprint was left whenever he talked. He was admired by everyone -including me, his life $as short, but happy and free. His path seemed to be endless, but marked in the end,, his life was turning around a sharp bend. To see so much energy just drift away, blew an awesome light out of everyone's day. Dave is gone bmjiis spirit's still here, it brings happy memories to those most dear. The echo of his laughter lingers with thoughts J and the realization that bringing happiness is tl iles he brought, Dave is now gone -he has answered God's callH but his impression is implanted in the hearts ofts all. Today all we can say -though it doesn't seem enough, is Good-bye Dave -we love you very much. ® '. Peterson A Friend To Remember Thanks for the memories. Truly great moments don't happen often for most of us and never at all for some. On those rare occasions when one is privileged to be a part of such a happening he cannot escape a feeling of awe, of exhileration, of accomplishment above the ordinary. There are no doubts, no alibis, no excuses... The thing is there, it exists, it stands on its own. It is the greatest... It may be a painting, a sculpture, a poem, a piece of music. Such a moment took place at 11:30 AM on March 30, 1978, at Columbus, Montana. You all remember it. The room was crowded. The air was hot. Uniform jackets were removed and sleeves were rolled up. Forty two minds concentrated on the same effort to transform notations on pages of paper into audible sounds to bring to life the ideas set down by a great creative genious. Remember? The first tones spelled out a melody of unsurpassed beauty with sureness and control, unhurried. It continued as voices of various colors and shades appeared and disappeared in contrasting forms and shapes. Gradually and subtly it built in intensity to the glorious and almost overwhelming power of the closing chords. When the final sounds had finished and silence once again prevailed, no one spoke, as if all wanted to hold on to the moment awhile longer before it faded into memory. It was truly a great moment. They don't happen often. I'll never forget it. Thanks a lot, Richard Wagner. Thanks a lot, Kids. Mr. John Billings Mr. John Billings began his teaching career in 1940. He took three years off to serve in the Marine corps during WW II and about 16 years were spent running a music store in Billings, Montana. Mr. Billings came to Bridger in 1963. His excellence in teaching music is well shown in his band and chorus which have consistently rated superior in competition. You say thanks a lot kids... We say thanks for giving us fifteen years of your life. Good luck, Mr. Billings, and God keep. The students and staff of Bridger An Animals’ Christmas Party Wade mans the lights. The Bridger Elementary School Christmas program featured An Animals' Christmas Party. Flower, a perplexed little skunk, did not understand the meaning of Christmas. As Flower searched for the meaning of Christmas it became entangled in a trap. Many animals shunned Flower because of the reputation that skunks have, but eventually the little creature was freed from the trap by Smokey the Bear. Flower traveled with other animals viewing Christmas and nativity scenes until the troop arrived at the Animals' Christmas Party. Flower's special apray put everyone in the Christmas spirit and Flower finally understood the true meaning of Christmas. 21 Back Row L-R: D. Tucker, B. Temple, K. Despite usually play- ing more experienced opponents, they dis- played outstanding desire and efforts. Al- though many times the game was difficult to comprehend, they were attentive to instruc- tions and fast learners. They were a com- petitive group of girls and look forward to a successful future. The girls were led by Joni DeRudder and Maria Marc hiando from the 8th grade, while the other 13 girls on the teams willlretum for Junior High competition. The A team finished with a record of 3 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. The 'B team had 3 wins and 5 losses. Coach Iverson Half time advice. Bridger's Defense. Back L-R: M. Peters, M. Marchiando, A. The 8th grade team finished with 8 wins and 2 losses along with the district champion- ship. It was a very rewarding year as many players got experience and improved in the many basic areas of the game. In each game there were 5-7 players scoring points which was vital to many victories. They had a good attitude about success coming from hard work and they didn't let down in the rough going. The 7th grade team displayed a 9-1 record and grew greatly as the season pro- gressed. They had several players also contributing to their success and were eager to learn the many skills. They are looking forward to the challenge of improving their abilities. I was very pleased with the outcome of the season. Each game was a learning experience for the boys and they were attentive in applying the knowledge to future games. Realization that suc- cess comes from dedication, desire, and effort was illustrated in the boys accomplishments. They possess good potential for continued success in the future. Coach Iverson 1. The 1977 football season was par- ticularity gratifying to me because the Scouts returned to a winning form, posting a fine 5-2 win-loss record. After dropping the first two contests, one of which we could have won, the Scouts finished strong, winning five in a row. The team had a fine blend of upper and under classmen (33-man squad), shown by the Scouts starting two sopho- mores much of the season. 1 will always remember the out- standing leadership provided by the five seniors: Ron Wilm-End, Kevin Ander- sen-Tackle , Kelly Scharcn-Guard, Leon Halvorsen-Q.B., and John Reichert - F.B. The efforts of these athletes set fine examples for the Scout team of the future, and pride instilled by this team will carry on. 1 look forward to next year, w'hen the Scout football team will consist of over 40 players. The girls winning 3rd place in the division was particularly re- warding as we previously had not won a trophy there. The five seniors who graduate will be greatly missed, especially the leadership and good example set by four- year let term an Joe Brookshier. Coach Fishbaugh Shawn breezes down the track. I am also proud of the staff for the introduction to Bridger of a new concept in slide shows with the purchase of a new syncronizer bought with annual staff and student council funds. My special thanks goes to Linda Bratsky who headed up this year's staff and to Shari Foltz whom we Kept in the dark most of the time. I feel the whole staff were not only my students but became Old Friends this year. I truly hope you take the time to enjoy this book and will continue to enjoy it for many years to come. I plan on taking Policical Science as my minor in college, my major being dra- ma. In the works of politics you have to entertain your audience as well as to keep their attention focused on you and your issues. At Girls' State I will learn about our government and come home with a better understanding of people and our country's of- ficials. The 1977 Homecoming festivities were considered a grand success for two reasons: (1) it was one of the best parades put on by BHS and (2) a fantastic win by the Scouts over St. Leo. All of the parade floats were built to depict a hit song. The Freshmen based their float on the song ' 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered having two Battered St. Leo football players all packaged upfor delivery. The Sophomores used • 'Takin' Care of Business for their float theme, showing a barbecue in which a Trojan was the main course. Theme to ' 'Star Wars'' was the song chosen by the miors who used R2-D2, C3PO, rockets shooting into the air and a whole store's worth of aluminum foil for their award-winning float. The Seniors' (song choice was ' 'The Night St.‘ Leo Died.'' Their float featured a graveyard with a Tmjan skeleton in a coffin. The parade was followed fcy a super pep r Jly that featured the pep club's now famous skit, ' 'But Mom, 1 swear . . . rV The cheerleaders also presented each team member and the coaches with a monster cookie. That night found the mighty Scouts defeating the St. Leo Trojans by a score of 30-0 in a game that found reserves holding the opponents just as well as the starters. The activities closed with a dance at the Bridger Civic Center featuring COTTONWOOD. The Annual Staff imported a seven piece band from Montana State University called Super Strut who put out some great sounds. Ski movies were shown throughout the dance, and com- bined with the super strutting of those attending, pro- vided all the action anyone wanted. The Annual Staff was very pleased that the dance was a success, es- pecially after the police asked the city council to close down the dances due to problems at previous dances. Art Show ’ The 1977-1978 Art classes were involved in many activities. The Art 1 class dabbled in a variety of experiences from basic drawing to painting Joe Brookshier's pickup. Art II's main time consuming projects included batiking and architecturally rendering their dream homes. Three students did independent work for credit ij Art III. With the purchase of a kiln all students experienced working with clay and were happy with the results. The Fine Arts Fair on April 5 was a huge success and included not only art work such as paintings, sculptures, and thread, but also a drama presentation and various numbers performed by the High School Band and Chorus. Three students (Jan Aldrich, Erin Young, and Shawn Kapor) were chosen to show their works from the Fine Arts Fair at Creat Falls for the Montana Art Interscholastics exhibition. ,c explains hi cierite fair project, T aCPTle Tearns about ester fixation, Trent e This year we were proud of three students that received grand prizes from Bridger. This enabled them to go to Missoula for the Montana State Science Fair. Representing the Junior High were Joni DeRudder and Jeff Scott. Representing the High School was Kevin Fox. Jeff received an excellent rating at Missoula. Joni brought home a good'' ribbon. Kevin Fox received a superior ribbon, the Army award, the Navy award and the Marine's award. These enabled Kevin to compete at a higher lever. Congratulations Bridger Scientists. The Junior-Senior Banquet was held on April 23, 1978 in the banquet room at the War Bonnet Inn. The menu in- cluded shrimp, ham, a salad bar, and an appetizing dessert. After the feast, the Senior wills and Junior prophecies were read. The party then moved across the hall to the disco room called the ,rID . Numerous hours of dancing fol- lowed and more food was served at 9:30. The Bridger pop machine flowed non stop as well as the music. Several dance contests were held with the win- ners receiving free dinners at the War Bonnet Inn. The foot sore party boarded the bus with full stomachs and fond memories at 11:00.
