X j f A CURRICULUM Central High School began in 1916 when more than a thousand eager students entered its halls seek- ing the opportunity to speak a language, to learn a trade, and, in general, to get a well-balanced educa- tion. Today, more than four decades later, its walls enclose nearly twenty-six hundred pupils, all endeav- oring to complete that course which will thoroughly prepare him for his future vocation. ln order to aid the students in obtaining the re- quirements for his particular field of work, it was necessary for the school to set up three different cur- ricula: College, Secretarial, and Practical Arts. Fresh- men may use the first year as an exploratory one in which to decide upon the curriculum they will want to pursue during their remaining years in high school. Another asset to the student in Central is its capa- ble faculty composed of well-trained educators, whose goal is to give us an adequate foundation for working and living in our democratic society. Each year, seniors leave filled with the knowledge that will enable them to attain success. Dressmaking is creating. -Q Let s check the figures carefully xv xjx rf 1 rv J 'Q -4 4+ W, Vw lf? Kaufman Approaching the climax of its senior year, the Class of '59 can be proud of its success. The Senior Mixer was the first social event of the year, closely followed by the Senior Trip to New York, where the students saw Westside Story. E. Guzzi, G. Kaleda, S. McMahon, B. Bues, C. Ray. Row 3: R. Engleman, J. Rosenberg, N. Soifer, S. Kelman, D. Portanova. The Importance of Being Earnest, the Senior Play, provided excellent entertainment for all. Sound effects. DO YGU REMEMBER January, 1956. An announcement was made today by the principal that the advisors for the Class of '59 are to be Mrs. Rose Gay and Mr. John Gramigna. With this the Class of '59 got under way. Their first duty as a class was to elect officers. They were: president, Danny Portanova, vice-president, Eleanor Genga, secretary, Sandy Yoneyp treasurer, Fred Maline, girls' direc- tor of social activities, Donna Lee, and boys' director of social activities, Sam Miller. Sophomore Rhythm, the Sophomore Assembly, was their first class activity. It centered around the history of the dance. Almost Paradise, held on May 17, 1957, found King James Sullivan and Queen Adeline Polena reigning over the sub- jects of the Class of '59, The year came to a close with the annual Junior-Sophomore Rye Beach trip, a great time for all. June, 1957. Elections for the otticers of the Junior Class were held, with the new electees being Adeline Polena as vice- president, Liz Guzzi as girls' director of social activities, and Reggie Minton as boys' director of social activities. The first social event of the season was the Scarecrow Hop, the traditional Junior Square dance, which Mrs. Gay directed from a sick-bed. Her reaction to her handicap was typical of her personality, Just keep busy and make this dance representative of our successful class. It was. Cupid's Capers, the Junior Assembly presented on Val- entine's Day, found Jean Lenotti as a hard-boiled lady boss who turned on her charms to astonish Phil Segneri, the Cri- terion editor-in-chief. Talented trio. That's the 59 rhythm. Let's go to the Hop! was the word being passed around by the Juniors in the weeks before April 19, the date of the Junior record hop, held at the Central gym, with Dick Alex- ander as M.C. The Juniors were quite proud of their collegiate-style rings, as they modeled them at their ring dance on May 17. The Ritz Ballroom was filled with the dreamy music of the Tony Guzzi Quintet and the happy faces of the Class of '59. The finale to a most exciting year was the traditional Rye Beach trip, dampened only by the news that Mr. Gramigna had resigned as co-advisor. June, 1958. Aaron Grossman took over as treasurer of the Senior Class, and his first iob was to distribute chevrons to all paid-up members of the class. The Senior Mixer, the second record hop presented by the Class of '59, was held on September 27, and featured Dick Alexander and a host of rockin' Revelers. New York was the destination of the Seniors on their Class trip on October 27. They enioyed seeing Westside Story, dining and dancing at the Edison Hotel, and chatting about the trip on the train-ride home. The Longshore Country Club was the only hall large enough to accommodate the four-hundred members of the Senior Class at their banquet, highlighted by the reading of the Class Will and Prophecy. June 10. Graduation. Breaths were held as the awards were given out, and all heaved a sigh mingled with relief and sad- ness as the diplomas were presented. The Ritz Ballroom was a fascinating sight on June 12, when all the members of the Senior Class and their dates gathered for the last class activity. The Senior Prom, together with the post-prom party, could only be described as a perfect ending to the story of the Class of '59. 4 lr. .Y N f Always left holding the bag ,fy We are Homeroom 304 The chief checks us out Ninetles Where s the train? Future plans include improving corridor pass- ing and sending officers to a summer camp and work shop attended by Student Council leaders from the whole of Connecticut. The Council's main obiective is to provide a means whereby it may assist in the promotion and control of the activities which will improve the school, and to provide a channel through which the opinions of the students may be expressed. It will take time for the Council to accept all re- sponsibilities which are properly assumed by a Stu- dent Council. It is an organization of which we are extrenyelybroud. 5 sf i K. y . s . With all but one of last year's team returning, hopes are high for a successful season. Last year, the Hilltoppers closed the season with 3 wins and 14 losses, and although their record was poor, they gained much valuable experience. Kicking up a storm. Line-drive. High pop-up let's try this plan. -C OUR COACH 'A EDWARD J REILLY Coach Edward J Reilly was born on March 26 1886 and smce the age of twenty two has been a coach at Central Hugh School He began his career as assistant football coach and within fifteen years had been named head football and basketball coach. Coach Reilly has developed many championship teams. Our football teams were state champs in 1923, 1939, and 1949. The basketball teams under Coach Reilly have achieved an excellent record. They have qualified for the State Tournament twenty-two times, for the New England Tournament four times, were state champs in 1939, and New England champs in 1934 and 1950. ln this, his fiftieth year, Coach Reilly can be proud of the spirited teams he has trained. The Hilltoppers copped the city football championship, and finished second in the M.B.l.A.C., while the basketball team qualified for the state championship. Little Ed, 6 years. One of Ed's many champions - '39, Top of the heap - '49, Coach and Doctor - '59. 98 As thousands cheer. The Red and Black will fight right back. Another win for Ed Central 6 - Harding O. Reillymen in action. And now home for turkey. SPRING SPORTS GOLF TENNIS Follow Through for accuracy. This is Yhe correcf grip , I The serve must have powe -,Sikh s...- tkl The start of the hundred. The track team opened its season on April 24, under a new coach, Mr. Ted Lovely. With mostly veterans returning to the squad, Co-Captains Charlie Piendl and Lou Giannettino can foresee a good season ahead. The squad participates in relays, in the 100-yard dash, shot put, dis- cus, javelin, broad iump, high iump, and long-distance races. Last season, being this squcld's first season working as a team, they finished with a poor record, but gained valuable experience. 4-1 FOOTBALL FRESHMAN Completing the '58 football season with a record of 3 wins and 'I loss, the newly- formed Red and Black freshman squad should be commended on the fine spirit and sportsmanship it showed throughout the season. The junior Hilltoppers opened the season with a 22-8 victory over Harding, and followed this by handing Stratford a crushing defeat to the tune of 28-14. Milford, fco, fell prey to the mighty Freshmen as they lost 28-0. The only defeat of the season was handed to the Hilltoppers by the Notre Dame squad, 20-6. Headed by William Basile, the freshman team enioyed a very successful season. -- as yn, avi iwr .ev STARTERS Row 'I K Moore R Oravetz A Carlson B DlMeo J Kemp A J Rabbltt J Perrelll Mr Newall Coach Baslle D Fitzgerald C Helms Row 2 Mr Roman Coach J Coffin SQUAD Rowl K Moore B Oravetz W Carson B DlMeo B Baslle D Fitz P Tantamonico M Hanna J Connlc J Carlsquello Manager gerald Row 2 J Coffin C Helms J Rabbltt R Oliver J Parelll Newall Couch R Vacco Row 3 Mr Roman Coach B Romano Manager N Zerel QW Q9 QQ 494- -- -2- CU-is VN K .-N! f K Foal, , ,S 4 ' 24- Lal V 1 y . .bfi 'f. .7-. , 2 4 X I ' 'Iv 1 A l F- I F l T i , -- ' i ,sq .
