Also a gen- eral training in otlice procedure is given so that the pupils will be able to till intelli' gently the clerical position of the modern business office and meet any situation that might arise. In the middle of March a contest was sponsored by the Commercial Club, the winners of which went to the state contest held this year at Ansonia High on April 9. Spevlal While the basic essentials of education are Osman and Miss Dora Brinsmade teaching Sewing. For the boys, a wellfequipped printing shop offers opportunity and enjoyment under the direction of Edwin Cooper. Those who plan to enter the lively Held of electrif city have excellent training under Thomas Scanzillo, awhile boys who look toward en' gineering find Earl Terwilligers mechanical drawing class an aid in later preparation and throughout their lit'e's work. The advice in the old Roman phrase, a sound mind in a sound body, seems to have been heeded in Central, for the students are all acquainted with the gymnasium. Miss Burnham, L0CkW00ll, MlSS Fall, MF- GOl'llY- Miss Ives, Miss Horne, Miss Goloif, iStanclingb: Mr. Cooper, Jr., Mr. S1-anzillo. well covered by the large departments, inf numerable voids are filled by those handled by only one or two teachers. Music and Art play important parts in everyones leisure even if students do not enter them professionally. Expression is of value every day in contacts with other people. These three departments are under the supervision of Alvin C. Breul, Nelson Cordy, and Miss julia Earnum. It is hardly necessary to explain the worth of Cooking and Sewing to any girl, regard' less of the plans she has made for her life after leaving Central. Miss Katherine Fall is in charge of the Cooking classes with Mrs. games. Miss Helen Lockwood and Earl Lakeman are supervisors. During study periods and before and after school Central's library, with Mrs. Hatch in charge, is open to all students. It contains a wealth of reading material, fiction, nonffiction, and reference books, The emergency rooms handled by the nurse, Mrs. McCarthy, have proved their necessity in cases of illness or accidents throughout the school.
