,Iillh-sl'il'lll'l' Although Mathematics and Science are two distinct departf ments., hecause ol' their close ref lationship they are usually thought ot' as one. One can not exist without the other, so closef ly are they interloclted. In the Science department, headed hy Vv'illiam Coley, are grouped Chemistry, Physics. B 1 o l o g y and' Physical Geo' graphy. At least one of these must he taken hy almost every college preparatory student. There are wellfequipped lahorf atories for practical demonstraf tion of these sciences, although it must he admitted that the students sometimes can he found pouring the contents of one test tuhe into another to see what pretty color results. That close ally of Science. Iviathematics, is always present. The utility of Mathematics. so apparent in eyeryfday lite, can not he oyerfemphasized. Here at Central this usefulness is recognized and this study is accorded a major place on many a program. From the time one struggles with Geometry as a Sophomore. through Tntermef diate Algehra in the ,lunior Year, to Solid Geometry and Trigonometry in Senior year. lxlathematics is a yital part of the curriculum, Under the direction of Miss Margretta Hurley. the faculty has attempted to hrealc down the harriers that lie hetween arithmetic. geometry, and algef hra. to deyote less time to theory and more to practical knowledge. and most of all to act as the hridge hetween a yast store of learning and the stud, ents' minds.
