A whole year is finally down in print. There are so many memories, of course, that can never be expressed in a picture or a word, but the staff has tried to capture this past year as best we could. We have grown, changed, and imple- mented new ideas. It has been hard at times, and tears of frustration have flowed, but we would not change a minute of it. This has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives. We could not have made it through the year without God's guidance and direction. We are grateful to everyone for cooperating with us, and we especially want to thank the staff, Mrs. King, our sponsor, and Mr. Clayton. The Saintcould not have been done without them. We hope this book truly expresses the life and ideals of Briarcrest as seen in the pages of The World of The Saint. As a Christian leader one must be strong in speaking out against evil and in openly declaring his faith in Christ. Yet, this must always be done with courtesy, consideration, and kindness. This is our principal, Joseph A. Clayton, whom God has sent our way to direct our fine school and the young people entrusted to Briarcrest. For this leadership we are truly grateful. Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as quiet strength. Gloria Clay 8 - Administration ia-N Mr. Danny Childs 4' . gait: Dr. Stirling B. fPatj Wiilliams As Vice Principal of Briarcrest, Mr. Danny Childs is called upon for various and numerous responsibilities. ln all areas, he has performed untiringly, always doing an outstanding job with an unending dedica- tion. His leadership helps guide our young people to be well-rounded citizens. Former students and personnel alike remember Mr. Childs with pride. With love and thanksgiving in our hearts, we praise God for allowing Briarcrest to have the services and talents of such a fine Chris- tian man. We are, indeed, proud to begin a new decade with this kind of leadership. Our prayers and support are with you, Mr. Childs, because you are so deserving. Mary Martin As Assistant Director of Secondary Education Dr. Williams has many responsibilities on every level of administration at Briarcrest. His knowl- ekdge, literary talents, efficiency, and organizational abilities aid Dr. Wil- liams, not only in fulfilling his administrative responsibilities with ease, but also in working with students and in teaching AP English. He is an extraordinary blend of discipline, human understanding, intellectual superiority, and professionalism. Briarcrest owes much to Dr. Williams for his dedication and hard work. You take seventeen girls, hours of practice, jittery nerves and excitement, and you have what Jun- ior Miss is all about! The Lord really blessed us this year. We sought His will in everything we did, and all of us grew closer to the Lord and closer together because of it. We worked together as a group with one purpose in mind - to put on the best Junior Miss pageant Briarcrest has ever seen. The Vocal Music Department offered a wide variety in 1979-1980, with the Advanced Chorus, the Beginning Chorus and Music Theory being offered as credit courses. Extra-curricular groups include the Concert Choir, the Girls' Chorus, and the Male Chorus. Briarcrest placed ten singers in the West Tennessee Chorus and seven in the All- State Chorus. The groups had many opportunities to sing, including concerts at numerous churches, the Federal Correctional Institution, the Tennessee Baptist Convention, and many more. The Concert Choir took its Spring Tour to New York City the week of Spring Break. Once again, this group was a very outstanding choir, and the Lord used them in a great way. A new element in the Concert Choir schedule was introduced this year: a Bible study that was totally organized and conducted by the students. This group met about every other week in the homes of various members. Tri-M completed its third year with the induction of ten new mem- bers, and F.C.M. proved to be a source of inspiration to students as various musical guests gave devotionals and musical presentations each Wednesday before school. The season provided many memorable events such as the Fourth Quarters vs. Prep, Collierville and Bart- lett, the heavy hurt following the loss at Brownsville, the good feeling of winning the last game, and the satisfaction of knowing the team never quit striving to win. In several areas, this team was one of Briarcrest's finest. Our seniors represented our school and team in the highest manner that is a tradition of Briarcrest football. When the final game was over and the play- ers celebrated the victory and winning season, I am sure all agreed that 1979 was worth it all. - Bob Yancey - xxx gs? J. 1375? The 1979 Freshman Football Team began its season and ended its season on a discouraging note. in between losses, the baby Saints rolled up five consecutive vic- tories and finished the season with a 5-2 record. The team was composed of a group of young men who were willing to make the supreme sacrifice of personal gains for the betterment of the team, and showed a lot of poise and class during the season. They, as a group, should make a strong contribution to the Varsity Football pro- gram to come. Sports - IUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS The Junior Varsity Cheerleading squad consisted of Sophomores. The squad did a lot throughout the year. They cheered at the pep rallies with the Varsity cheer- leaders, sent cupcakes and Secret Admirer flowers to the J.V. basketball team. Sporls - 211 VARSITY BASKETBALL This season was one of the most enjoyable seasons that I have ever experienced. This team was totally dedi- cated to being the best that they could be. There were many high points during the season, some of which were victories over Christian Brothers, Covington, Bartlett, Overton, MUS, and Germantown. The successful season can be attributed to the fine leadership provided by sen- iors Brad Coolidge, Kelly Hardcastle, Craig Moody, Alan Morris, David Newman, Jeff Phillips, and Jet Thomas. These tremendous young men provided not only physical and mental leadership, but also spiritual leadership. Briarcrest and the parents of these young men can be proud and thankful for the class, the competitive spirit, the desire, the dedication, and the Christian witness that these young men demonstrated this season. This team wanted to bring honor and glory to God, and they did just that. I want to thank each team member and his parents for a great season. Coach Holman 2l2 - Sports Coach Walt Holman ' v F I ,. Several wrestlers did well in the District Tournament and then advanced into the Regionals. Bob Adams was the team captain and finished high in the Regional Tournament. The 1980 Briarcrest Varsity Boy's and Girl's golf teams had many ups and downs during the year. They played a very tough schedule and finished the year with a combined record of 13 wins and 20 losses. The high note of the season was when they finished second in the Dis- trict Tournament and earned the right to advance to the Regional Tournament in Savannah, Tennessee. They fin- ished 5th place out of nine teams that were competing. There were no seniors on the team so the future has something in store for the 1981 golfers if they continue to strive and work hard. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so Much seek to be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love, For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, It is in dying that we are born to eternal life Amen 1 1,,.X f,, 3-gh. gg- ,D P, M, I, 9 gg ,pfk - 'Vu'-1w,fafQf 933,555 ff,-.l,A U 95,6511 , QA . hifi J 1, if + 1 - fr-11-1,-. ,wal V71 4 ff?
