THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT at Briarcliff offers a Wide variety of subjects: Semi-Micro-Analysis, General Chemistry, Physics, General Biology, Advanced Zoology, Physical Science, and General Science. An effort is being made to give more practice in the lab, thereby giving the students the opportunities to seek answers rather than have answers provided, to verify conclusion and to pursue special personal scientific interests and Curiosities. Scientificly literate citizens are needed to make intelligent decisions related to the welfare of the state and nation. Physical education at Briarcliff offers each student an opportunity to par- ticipate in a program that is enjoyable, instructive, constructive and worth- while. The eighth and ninth grade students take a required course that affords them experience in team sports, tumbling and apparatus work, wrestling and other combatitives, rhythms, track and field, and individual sports. An elec- tive program for upper-classmen is offered in which advanced skills in tech- nique and strategy are taught. The major emphasis of the mathematics program at Briarcliff is on the college preparatory phases of the subject. Five years of math through calculus and analytical geometry are currently being taught. - This year the Secondary Mathematics Study Group material is being used by all the advanced math classes in an effort to give the advanced level student the benefit of recent changes in the approach to teaching high school mathematics.
