I8 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT strives to develop intangibles of personality and character . . . Robert South once said, uHe that governs well leads the blind, but he that teaches him gives him eyes. This might be applied to the teachers of English at Briarcliff High School, who are highly competent in subject matter and in the methods that deal with the teaching of the spoken and of the written word. One characteristic of the group is the striving toward unity of purpose-the purpose of which is to help pupils become more effective in the use of the English language through the art of listening, speaking and writing. A prime objective of the English teachers is to awaken in pupils an appreciation for great works of literature and their authors.
