The administration, an inte- gral part of Briarcliff High School, has many functions. First-to guide. Is there a greater responsibility? The wandering mind of youth, malleable, unformed, enters the labyrinth' of knowledge and may be lost if not prop- erly guided. Management of the school is placed in the hands of the administration. There are always schedules to be ad- justed, tests to be supervised, and those who defy school rules and regulations to be dealt With. All problems ter- minate in the offices of the administration, whether it be a studentls problem or a problem student. Capable minds are chal- lenged with managing the unruly, governing those who protest government, and guiding those who know no direction. I6 l MR. ANSLEY H. I8 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT strives to develop intangibles of personality and character . . . Robert South once said, uHe that governs well leads the blind, but he that teaches him gives him eyes. This might be applied to the teachers of English at Briarcliff High School, who are highly competent in subject matter and in the methods that deal with the teaching of the spoken and of the written word. One characteristic of the group is the striving toward unity of purpose-the purpose of which is to help pupils become more effective in the use of the English language through the art of listening, speaking and writing. A prime objective of the English teachers is to awaken in pupils an appreciation for great works of literature and their authors.
