Salutes The challenging academic program at Briarcliff was again reflected by its eight National Merit Scholarship Finalists. For their excellent scholastic achievement we proudly recognize Shcriy Vernon, Charles Churchman, Taylor Bink- ley, Rich Ernst, Corky Corcoran, Joyce lrwin, Aita Kivivare, and Penny Penland. .leff Maxey is not only a member of the Key Club, but also Editor of the KEY RING, the official publication of the Georgia District of Key Club International. It is fitting that we recognize .leff for this far reaching posi- tion of leadership. Few wrestlers have the honor of holding the State Championship. When an individual re- tains this title for three consecutive years he deserves special recognition. For this ex- ceptional athletic distinction, we salute a co- captain of our wrestling team, Bucky Harrel- SOIL Andy Guy, sophomore halfbaek, received honorable mention on the North Georgia All'Star Teamg Mike Swanson, senior center, State All-Star Team, and Horace Coza, Senior end, honorable mention on both. We commend these boys for their performance this season. The Future Teachers of America Club has chosen as Teacher of the Year a man whom they feel cpitomizes those qualities necessary for excellent instruction. He maintains disciplinary con- trol based upon a mutual feeling of respect. He pos- sesses the highest profession- al ethics and actively par- ticipates in professional or- ganizations. His concern for the welfare of both students and fellow faculty members is readily seen. His broad knowledge of subject matter makes his class not only in- teresting, but also very worth- while. Of Briarcliffis 5 state champions who competed in the Georgia-Alabama meet, Larry Wiggins and Mike Swanson, for his second consecutive year, emerged victorious. For the honor they bring to Briarcliff we salute them. l88 as STAR Student and STAR Teacher. On December 4, 1962, The Betty Crocker Homemaking Test of knowledge and aptitude was administered to all in- terested Senior girls. Betsy McBride had the highest score of those entering and was thus chosen Briareliffs Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow, which made her eligible for state and perhaps national competition. At the Leaders Banquet sponsored by the Key Club, Shielc The Georgia Chamber of Commerce STAR Student award, in recognition of the Senior making the highest score on the December College Board SAT, goes to Penny Penland. M-rs. Hester Means was chosen hy Penny as the person who has contributed the most to her education, having been her mathematics teacher for three years. Because of the learning and teaching abilities of these two people, we honor them 200 students holding commanding positions in school clubs and activities chose as Leader of the Year for 1962-63 the same boy that the Decatur Optimist Club chose as Boy of the Year from Briarcliff. He is also Co-Editor in Chief of the SHIELD, President of the Key Club and The Most Versatile Boy in the Senior Class. For his outstanding leadership and achievement we salute Bob Caslleherry. The Bousch and Lomb Corporation gives an award each year to the graduating senior who has achieved the best record in science studies during his high school years. This award goes to Susan Blank, an outstanding Senior who is President of the National Honor Society. fti1Qf'If'3'f7lil V an . . T si..-h qs '91 ae? .4 M. JIS 1 One Senior member of the student body is chosen by the faculty to receive a citizenship medal given by the Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution. This year that medal went to the President of the Pep Club, captain of the Cheerleaders, and Vice-President of the Student Government. Our congratula- tions go to Lynn Patrick, DAR Citizen of the Year.
