ax .S7wZ,Lum '54 PLEDGE TO BREWSTER HIGH We're loyal to you Brewster High, We're red and white Brewster High, We'll back you to stand 'Gainst the best in the land For we know you'll do grand Brewster High. Amid the great broad fields that nourish our land For honest battle and for freedom, we stand And unto you, we pledge our hearts and hands, Dear B. H. S. we're true to you. OFQLUOI' On the pages of this book is written the story of one of the happiest years of our lives. The Shelokum Staff of 1954 invites you to join us in reliving these experiences. As you delve through the pages, may your enjoyment equal ours. BREWSTER HIGH SCHOOL tBrewster, Washington lecbcafion WE DEDICATE TO YOUTH ...... As the 1954 graduates are handed their diplomas, they will embark on the road of life ahead, wherever it may take them. And proceeding side by side with youth along that road will be progress. With that eagerness to advance which only youth can provide and with the wisdom which youth can obtain only from older generations, that road will lengthen. Each problem faced, whether or not the answer will prove to be the true one, will be a stepping-stone. Today, as youth leaves through graduation, the world of high school and its joys, it will be met by the seriousness of living in an age of atomic power. And on the shoulders of youth will be placed the consequence of that power. book is dedicated to youth with the hope that the goal which they seek will beinspired by a higher Power than that which a scientist could provide. As youth moves, so shall the progress of the world. Thegyouth of a nation are the trustees of posterity. TIME: June l, 1974 PLACE: Hollywood, California EVENT: The premier of the new motion picture The Moon is Purple. The lights are shining brightly as we drive up to the theatre. This is one of the most important premiers of all timesg all the top personalities will be here. As we step from our car who should greet us but photographers! Millions of them are flashing their cameras! Whom should we see right in the middle of all of them but Joe Cleveland and Dave Van Loan. Say, these two are really making a name for themselves takin pictures of all the top stars! It is said that they specialize in making calengars. We finally got away from them. I wonder who will stop us next? Oh, there's the top columnist for Hollywood who writes Gossip Gimics for the Moony Movie magazine. I believe her name is Glendal Fitzhugh. And they say she really has a nose for news. Ah, getting by her wasn't so easy. But we finally made it into the theatre. Oh, there are my two old friends, Pat Steele and Shirley Riggan! Pat is an usher and Shirley hands out programs. They are working their way through nurses' training, but they've been at it so long now one wonders if they'll ever make it. Well, here we are in our seats. Let's look over the program and see Who's in The Moon is Purple. The co-stars are Betty .Io Pool and Kenneth Ruther- ford. You know, that Ken Rutherford is positively the greatest lover ever. Why, I bet he's dated every eligible girl in Hollywood. They say that when Betty Pool sings the blues in this movie it really sends you. What's this ? In supporting roles are Marilyn Whitehall and .Terry Wilson! Oh, I heard about that. It's said that their love scene in the last is something to see. I wonder! Look who's walking down the aisle. It's Dick Renner, the producer. . .I wish I had the money he's got, a multimillionaire, no less. He's got his private secretary, Deloris Shrable, and his chauffeur, Howard Guenther, with him. I guess he never goes any place without them, they're so efficient. What's all that confusion over there ? Oh, the bouncer, Ivan Kimball, has to escort someone out, some trouble-maker, I suppose. I feel safe with Ivan bouncing though, he's so big and brawny. Why, there's Leon Bartley, the celebrated director of The Moon is Purple. He has Della Mathers with him. She owns one of the largest clubs in New York, and just think, she started with a mere coffee shop in a trailer house. Back to my program. It says that the music is composed and directed by Barbara Guilliams. It should be good then, she alwa s features a solo on the baritone sax. My, the gowns were designed by Pearl, Howell! I wish she would design me a gown, she makes such beautiful creations! There's Tom Ansert, who owns the theatre. Behind him is Dr. Paslay, a famous woman doctor. I've heard that she performed her first operation on Mac Wilson, poor guy! Funeral arrangements were taken care of by Mortician, Larry Miller. What's all the clapping for ? Oh, the star Betty Jo just walked in with her aglent, Ed Myers. Without that agent ofhers she wouldn't be what she is today. T ere's Duane Harper and George Driskell, too. They are taking a vacation and touring the world, they just stayed in Hollywood long enou h for the premier What's this ad on the back of our program ? It's advertising a ioxing match! Boxing at Madison Round Gardens tomorrow night. Featured bout between Orvis Guenther and Dave Ham.mons. That I must see. They really get rough. 'Spose I can make it? Say, look up in the box seats. There's Fred Davies, a senator, who flew in from Washington D. C. He certainly is a distinguished guest. Sitting beside him is Ed Shirk. He was just promoted to dean of the college here. Such an intellectual man! Who's that sitting up behind us ? Why, it's Scooter Mason. She runs a reducing salon here in Hollywoodg she specializes in removing fat spots. Seems she never gets hers removed, though. Well, Ihad better turn around. The show is about to start and after all, that's what I came for. 43 Cfadri alrlirifory Five of the Seniors, Marilyn Whitehall, Mac Wilson, Tom Ansert, Ed Meyers, and Duane Harper, have attended dear old Brewster School since starting in the first grade, the teacher being Mrs. Moore. In 1943 Jerry Wilson started the first grade, and later skipped the seventh grade to join us in the Sth. In the second grade, Big Ive Kimball honored us with his presence, coming from Okanogan. George Driskell, from Tacoma, also joined our class that year. In the fourth grade, Pearl Howell entered our happy little gang, moving from Tonasket. Our fifth grade found us receiving two happy students--Donelle Paslay from Oregon City, Oregon, and Shirley Riggan from Sheridan, Arkansas. In 1948 a handsome lad, Fred Davies from Okanogan, joined us. Another lad entering was Dave Hammons from Bridgeport. The seventh grade brought a landslide--five new students. Howard and Orvis Guenther, and Joe Cleveland from Monse, Glendal Fitzhugh from Leola, Arkansas, and Betty Jo Pool from Tahlquah, Oklahoma. In 1950 we gained two more students: Scooter Mason from Wenatchee, and Dave Van Loan from Richland. During our first year of high school, Pat Steele joined us from Nunda, New York, and Larry Tex Miller from Grand Coulee. We shall never forget what we went through to become full-fledged Freshmen--initiation! ! In 1952 two football players joined us. Ed Shirk from Grand Coulee, and Ken Rutherford from San Francisco, California. This year, as Sophomores, we really initiated the Freshmen, and also held a very success- ful Handsome Harry and Pretty Polly Dance. Deloris Shrable from Cashmere joined us as a Junior. This year the outstanding event was the Junior Prom with Queen, Scooter Mason, and King, Fred Davies, reigning. Another social high light was our Junior Play, Second Fiddle, where Jerry Wilson found himself engaged to Glendal Fitzhugh and married to Marilyn Whitehall. Girls' State representatives this year were Scooter Mason, Betty Jo Pool, and Donnelle Paslay. Our mighty Senior year became more interesting as Leon Bartley from Seattle, Barbara Guilliams, Richland, and Della Mathers, Bellvue, entered Brewster High. We shall remember our Senior year for our successful Senior Ball, with Glendal Fitzhugh and Leon Bartley as royalty, our Senior Sneak, enjoyed by all, and our Senior Class play, Everybody's Crazy, directed by Jerry Wilson. The class of '54 has some outstanding students. Boys well known for their athletic ability are: Jerry Wilson, football and track, Orvis Guenther, football, basketball, baseball, and track, boxing and wrestling, Dave Hammons boxing and wrestling-, football, and baseball, Ivan Kimball, football, basket- ball, and baseball, Ed Shirk, football and basketball, Ken Rutherford, football Joe Cleveland, football and basketball, Dave Van Loan, football, Fred Davies basketball and baseball, Tom Ansert, football, Duane Harper, baseball. The girls, too, were active in Pep Club, Girls' Club, and Dramatics. The cheerleaders for the season of '52, '53, and '54 were chosen from our class. We Seniors feel that these memories of our school days will be cherished in our hearts, and that these years were numbered with the happiest years of our lives. 44 alias! an lafamenf We, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-four, do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament, to be read on the first day of June, Nineteen hundred and fifty-four.
