LCCKERS As one Walks down the corrldors of our school those ugly green and gray metal lockers appear only to dlsfigure the archlteet s deslgns To the students howevf r thf Sf lockers offer a sense of belonglng slnce throughout the school years a stud: nt s lleku seems to be the one th1ng that really belongs to hlm Some very lucky people have thelr loeke1 all to themselves but others are stuek wlth a horrlble creature known as a locker mate These locker mates are espeelally tern ble be1ngs as they always have .more books take up more proportlonate space and never fall to throw the1r dr1pp1ng wet gym tovsel on top of one s hlstory notebook To freshmen these lockers are tln monsters whose sole purpose IH l1fe IS to make them late to classes mlss the bus home and completely upset thelr d1gn1ty Many sueh a freshman has stood 1n front of h1s monster looklng dlsmal unt1l the Janltor or some klnd upper classman spottmg h1s dllemma comes to the rescue When you become the p1oud owner of one of these lockers you also become the owner of a serles of numbers known as a comblnatlon The smart person wrltes down these numbers on a plece of pape1 so he w1ll not fo1 get them but then he 1nev1tably locks the paper 1ns1de the locker Of course thele IS always the problem of commg back to school after the summer and havlnv forgotten the comblnatlon Sometlmes more than a year lb requued fo1 one to become the master of th1s cormb1nat1on and dlflicult lndeed It IS to attalll th1s goal After a wh1le the average person flnds that It IS much slmpler Just to leave the darn th1ng unlocked B6S1d9S 1n half a year at least lockers are the books and one doesn t mlnd lf anyone takes them The chances of any one s taklng a book are very small anyway because one wlshes to d1m1n1sh h1S supply of books rather than lncrease It The assortment of thlngs that can be found 1ns1de one locker IS amazlng Fust there are books of all slzes and shapes Wlth papers falllng out of them then sllde rules notebooks penclls and leaky pens a1e found there Many lockers contaln sneak ers gym shorts and shlrts Jackets scarfs gloves and rubbers wh1ch have been left there by students whose mothels lnslsted that they wear them that ramy day ln October There IS sometlmes food such as half of yesterday s lunch or an apple brought for recess also are seen the remalns of snacks coke bottles and candy wrappers Some mus1c1ans keep thelr lnstruments 1n these storehouses but that IS rather a problem to the tuba player Last but not least comes an assortment of combs costumes from a play baseballs gloves hbrary books last week s dance tlckets and SOUVQHIFS from the football game last fall Famlllar phrases to the teacher are I got the vsrong book from my locker and May I go to my locker' I forgot somethlng To the fellow classmate these sentences concernlng the t1n beasts are often heard Meet me at my locker after school or It s ln my locker you can go get It Yes lockeo IS a common wold around school One of the most complex problems th1s xault p1 esents IS the problem of balance It takes an expert to be able to stack all hls books ln propel ly so they do not fall out when the door IS opened Every once ln a Whlle someone upsets th1s balance and when the door IS opened the law of gravlty takes 0V61 and all the p1ec1ous objects come cascadlng out onto the floor Desplte the many problems and troubles that must be met when deahng wlth th1s vsorn creature thele a1e many sad faces as the senior takes hls Jacket from hls locker for the last tlme and shuts the door on th1s fr1end and subsequently on a part of h1s 1 e MARY BURKE 57 . l . , . , I 3 ' - ' . . 1 . , ' : , :.' : I ' ' W - , 7 1 f . , - n , w , 4 A 1 ' ' I ' . w , ' - 1 I- .
