Janie Conley and Richard Harris use the library for history reports. Mrs. Stern enjoys teaching at BHS. Social Studies tries nine-week Mrs. Bishop reminds her class that there will be no talking during the test. 26 Social Studies The Social Studies Department followed the example of the En- glish Dept. in offering nine-week mini courses. The new curriculum proved to be as effective in Social Studies as in English. Students were offered more difficult courses in which they received more honor points. Field trips added depth to the social studies classes, such as the one to see Nickolas and Alex- andra. A variety of courses was offered each period every nine weeks. David Holden concentrates.

Enlightened by the arrival of Mr. Phan and his years of teaching experience, the Foreign Language Department led the students to a clearer understanding of the French and Spanish languages. First year students were intro- duced to the foreign languages primarily through listening and speaking the language. The second year was basically grammar and composition. Third and fourth year students learned about the culture of the countries, from which the languages originated. Although enrollment was small, Spanish V increased the courses offered by the Foreign Language Department. Filmstrips, records, tapes, and oth- er aids enriched the learning pro- cess of the Foreign Language stu- dents. Students sang songs and played games in the foreign lan- guages to increase their under- standing. Mrs. Brittian always has time to help her students with difficult pronunciation. Spanish I students are enriched by games such as this, played in the classroom. Mrs. Winchester listens to a student’s trans- lation. 28 Foreign Language
