1973 Brevardier Volume XXIX Brevard Senior High School Brevard, North Carolina Contents - Introduction Dedication — ‘Theme a Academics Features . . orice Directory index: 0.4 Closing Theme . Advertisements . Those who give have all things... We wish to dedicate the 1973 BREVARDIER to one who has dedi- cated her time and energy to Bre- vard High School. She has given much to many — in the classroom, in her club sponsorship, and most important, in her compassion to- ward each individual. Thank you, Mrs. Ideker, for giving us a part of yourself. Brevard Senior High School, like all academic institutions, has gone through many changes. These changes have resulted in conflict, overshadowing the unity of our school. This was perhaps the first year, in many years that our school was truly together. The uildinee iad Gaps have re- mained relatively the same. The administration and. faculty. con-) tinued the majority of their poli- cies. The difference was the © _ people. Students and faculty began to reach out for something better. People became individuals, with’ one general objective — to improve, not only academically but also per- | sonally. We looked for the good projected this, and worked through ; the system to change the bad. ‘Per. haps even soul-searching became a part of our growth. To be able to be together was probably the most im portant phase of our total educ: oe sat Sado See aR Pas ee | peter neem 38 Students began to communicate not only with each other, but also with the faculty and administration. They worked together for one main objective — the passage of the school bond issue. Many students actively campaigned, while others used their newly acquired right to vote, to attain its success. 1972 also brought about a national election. Students realized their power to guide the country’s destiny and made sure they were heard. The apathy of the past was slowly changing to concern for today. 10 sNsaaeatensancae i tlmetnetnememtinen Togetherness didn’t just happen. It wasn’t an accident, but a combi- nation of definite efforts focused in the same direction. There were difficult times when we wondered who really counted, and then when it came down to it, we knew that a part of every individual cared, thus we all counted. We wondered if all the pain was actually worth it. We were ready to quit — tired of trying. That’s when a simple smile would make us know we were ac- complishing something. It really was worthwhile. 11 ii P A : i ie Hin | : 4 ri | mi on er oR AN i i i i i} Ht —— There was not only a lot of caring at Brevard High School, there was also a lot of loving. This one ingre- dient held more people together than all others combined. Laughing with the world and knowing our friends were genuinely pleased for us was true happiness. We felt like we belonged to something im- portant, and we knew it when we cried the last time we heard the school song. We were truly together in 1973. 13 Concern for feelings... Willingness to listen... Understanding the mis- understood . . . Giving, seldom to receive ... Friendships to rely on... Being an individual .. . Dif- ferences that brought us together. 15 Administration deals with Faced with daily problems, such as apathy, and problems of greater concern, such as the school bond issue, the administration worked endlessly to dissolve these prob- lems under the leadership of Mr. Stanley, in his fourth year as prin- cipal of BHS. Students seeking advice and guidance felt at ease going to Mr. Williams and Mrs. Cope for the necessary consultation. Juniors and Seniors were greatly benefited from the Guidance Dept. in the selection of colleges through such help as college day. New to the Administration Dept., Mrs. Winchester kept an accurate record of all the students’ absences. She and Coach Emory had the con- tinual task of disciplining students with their best interest in mind. Mrs. Bryson and Mrs. Dodson were joined this year by Cathey Hooper, who quickly adjusted to the school atmosphere through her experienced co-workers. Daily deadlines were met resulting in order and preciseness of the of- fice. ia. MRS. HOLL Mr. Corbin, Mrs. Olson, Mrs. Gordon, and Mr. Case all work to improve our school. Mrs. Bryson often works overtime to com- plete many deadlines. 7, The English Dept., for the second year, offered nine-week mini courses in various fields of English. There were many definite advan- tages to the mini-course. Students were able to select courses which more nearly fit their individual interests, abilities, and needs. With the addition of seven new courses, and one new teacher, Mrs. Carol Waterson, the English Department offered a wide variety of courses, from Relationships Between Man And Woman to Introduction To Literary Criticism. Some students were dismayed by the choice of English courses offered during a nine weeks, but usually schedules and classes could be worked out so that the student was in a class he was interested in and could benefit from. Teachers were able to spe- cialize in subject areas which in- terested them and for which they were prepared. With its shelves of books and the librarians’ assistance, the student could handle almost anything. The atmosphere in the library was si- lent, but not oppressive, and thus enabled the student to concentrate on his work. Teachers, as well as students, viewed the library as a valuable source of information through its resources such as filmstrips, over- head projectors, books, magazines, pamphlets, tapes, and records. Mr. Beard explains the advantages of the new math system. 22 Math Eo eer through individualized work The newest and most important word in the Math Department this year was change. Students partic- ipated in a pilot program under the State Department of Public Instruction. For the math teachers, the school year did not start its customary three days before stu- dents began, but months before, in the planning of this program. The stress of this program was on individualization. Each student worked at his own speed, and took the tests at his own speed. Three varieties of each course were of- fered: an honors, college prep, and minimum course in each class. The new individualized study did not apply to General Math or Consum- er Math. Mrs. Hutchins prepares her work for her Algebra III student, Angela Barnette, works hard to complete the required amount of work. next class. 23 Biology converts to mini The Science Department offered a variety of courses for general requirements and also for the col- lege preparatory students. Offering nine week mini-courses proved to be an asset to the department. Each student must have obtained at least one credit in biology and at least one in Physical Science upon grad- uation. Many college bound stu- dents followed up Physical Science with Chemistry or Physics. Ad- vanced courses were introduced this year; Microbiology, Human Reproduction, and Graphoptics. The Graphoptics students pro- cessed pictures for the school news- paper and annual. Coach Deal always finds time in his busy schedule to help students such as Martha and David Hayes. The new curriculum proved to be as effective in Social Studies as in English. Students were offered more difficult courses in which they received more honor points. Field trips added depth to the social studies classes, such as the one to see Nickolas and Alex- andra. A variety of courses was offered each period every nine weeks. David Holden concentrates. Enlightened by the arrival of Mr. Phan and his years of teaching experience, the Foreign Language Department led the students to a clearer understanding of the French and Spanish languages. First year students were _ intro- duced to the foreign languages primarily through listening and speaking the language. The second year was basically grammar and composition. Third and fourth year students learned about the culture of the countries, from which the languages originated. Although enrollment was small, Spanish V increased the courses offered by the Foreign Language Department. Filmstrips, records, tapes, and oth- er aids enriched the learning pro- cess of the Foreign Language stu- dents. Students sang songs and played games in the foreign lan- guages to increase their under- standing. Mrs. Brittian always has time to help her students with difficult pronunciation. Spanish I students are enriched by games such as this, played in the classroom. Mrs. Winchester listens to a student’s trans- lation. 28 Foreign Language Parlez-vous Francais? Leinster and Fran Carr finish up a ‘rush job” for another department. Enrolling approximately one- third of the student body, the Busi- ness Department at Brevard High helped to prepare potential office workers. Education for business is a broad field of study, composed of a sequence of learning expe- riences from basic to specialized skills and attitudes necessary to the world of office work. The Business Department was not just for the college bound stu- dent, but for the high school grad- uate as well. Students performed many services for the school in on- the-job training. The Future Busi- ness Leaders of America Club added depth to the curriculum. Basic Business and _ Personal Typing were added to the Business curriculum. Basic Business intro- duced the student to the everyday business activities and situations he will face in his adult life. Chris Sneeden is puzzled over the section that Mrs. Owen has just finished explaining. Tommy Bryson discovers much co-ordina- tion is needed in typing class. Necessary skills are learned Students completing courses in the Vocational Dept. were equip- ped with valuable training for their future employment. Necessary skills were achieved in both classrooms and in actual on-the-job training through Dis- tributive Education. Broad fields of agriculture, drafting and construction were explored by students through par- ticipation. On- the-job as well as classroom train- ing made students aware of medical terms, diseases, and systems of the body. Students received valuable experience from working at the Transylvania County Hospital. Due to lack of funds, there was not a sick room this year. Vanessa Stiles and Craig Hooper share books such as The Merck Manual that are useful in Health Occupations. Cynthia Wynn looks through pamphlets on careers. Mrs. Balding makes her classes more interesting by the use of visual aids. Lifelike figures are useful to Health Occu- pation students. 34 Health Occupations Home Ec. is more than one thinks The Home Economics Depart- ment provided an opportunity to obtain knowledge and_ develop skills for homemaking roles, or dual roles as homemakers and wage-earners. Cooking and sewing were not the only skills learned in this department, as many peo- ple think. Child development, clothing and textiles, consumer education, family economics, fam- ily relationships, foods and nutri- tion, grooming and personal ap- pearance, housing and home fur- nishings, and home care of the sick were also involved in the Home Economics Department. Food Service classes served food to selected groups during the sec- ond semester to gain experience in food preparations and service. Martha Owen puts to use one of the many skills acquired in Home Ec. Karen Nicholson receives her report card from Mrs. Burrell. Gail Pressley learns that cleaning up is an important part of cooking. Offered in the summer, as well as during the school year, Driver’s Education proved to be vital for anyone learning to drive Whether Coach Johnson was teaching in the classroom, which was the auditorium, or in the car, he got his message across well. Students did not just learn how to drive, but more important, how to drive safely. Coach Johnson gives back tests for correction of wrong answers. Study Halls are necessary For the first time BHS had two staff members solely for the pur- pose of maintaining the study halls. In the past years teachers had to monitor these study halls, thus sometimes wasting valuable time that could have been spent teach- ing in the classroom. Billy Dechant enjoys his Study Hall. David Johnson warms-up. rz Physical Education was more than a course in which students participated in activities such as volleyball, softball, football, and other sports. The purpose of the Physical Education department was to prepare the students phys- ically, mentally, and socially for their later life. Students learned the value of sportsmanship, and will hopefully carry this with them. Physical Education was a demand- atory course required for all fresh- men, which resulted in many new experiences for them. Upperclass- men enjoyed the advanced classes that were offered to them. Coach Owenby loves it. Millicent Norman demonstrates one of the skills acquired in Advanced P.E. 38 Physical Education Total dedication of many Music courses were not as easy to enroll in, as many of the other courses offered at BHS. Most of the band members had been play- ing since they began Junior High School. The marching band as well as the concert band were enthused by competition such as that in Bris- tol, Tenn.-Virg. and Marion, N.C. Students who were interested in chorus auditioned for a part in either of the two chorus classes. Students participating in the Music Dept. not only acquired musical skills, but also learned the impor- tance of group effort. Students involved in the art clas- ses left BHS everyday to go to the Jr. High to put their creativity and imagination to use. Abilities were developed through various media and subject matter. Outdoor classes helped capture nature on paper. Models such as bicycles, still lifes, and human figures were captured. Mrs. Evan’s guidance directed the students dedicated to art. Under the supervision of Mrs. Neal, the lunchroom was kept in proper running order. Confusion arose from the new lunchlines, higher lunch prices, and misunderstandings over senior privileges. These soon faded out with time. The lunchroom pleased students by offering chocolate milk once a week. Although students were respon- sible for clearing their plates, the cafeteria staff had their hands full in the cleaning up after each lunch shift. Pride shown through work Working on a scheduled basis, the maintenance staff answered the needs of maintaining a clean campus. Taking pride in our school was shown through their continual ef- forts of improving and keeping up the school. This pride showed even more than that of the students. Work not only consisted of the buildings themselves, but also the grounds, which included long hours after school was out. Work like cleaning after dances and sports was part of their responsibilities. These are three assets to the upkeep of our school. Mrs. Ballard finds a moment to relax in her busy schedule of cleaning. Mr. Brissey works diligently to present the students a favorable surrounding. Maintenance Staff 41 FEATUR When each student offered some- thing of himself, he offered his own talent and creativity. His giving and sharing remained a part of him throughout every day. Though there were many long roads to walk and steep hills to climb, together we learned to strive for better things. 43 Intelligence and leadership In the Hall of Fame the outstand- ing achievements of both Seniors and underclassmen were _high- lighted. These awards, though covering various areas of achieve- ment, such as music, athletics, and intelligence, all have one_ thing in common. They were all the result of much outstanding dedication and hard work. These achievements in various fields all unite to form a well rounded student body, all working together to keep B.H.S. a school everyone can be proud of. The Top 5 in the Senior Class are: L. The average Junior was a seemingly care-free_ indi- vidual. He was very thorough in everything he undertook, including his efforts which produced a prize- winning float, and numerous mon- ey-making projects for the Junior- Senior. He looked forward to his future seniority with great antici- pat ion, though not without a touch of disbelief. In preparing for the coming year, he had to put aside many joyous memories, to rush headlong into a bewildering un- certainty, as to what course his future would take. He knew, how- ever, he would live it and love it, as he did yesterday. Miss McGaha, Junior Class Sponsor, finds The Junior Class Officers are: Dennis Clark, Pres.; Terri Weaver, V. He knew that this year would be hard, but took it a little easier because he realized he was going up, not down on the ladder toward senior- ity. Upperclassmen and teachers accused him of being cocky, while he constantly tried to combat the yearly sophomore slump. Despite the difficulties of floats, pep ral- lies, changing schedules, and just aa growing a little older, the sopho- i ain oo a more is ready once again to face iii el el another challenging year, hopefully i ae Oa a as anew junior. They quickly learned the importance of team work in athletics, building a float and working in their indi- vidual classes. Then they put their findings into practice in all activ- ities in which they were involved. It was an exciting year with new ideas and new faces. But the Class of 76 came through, and will be an asset to BHS in the future, with their high spirit and willingness to show what they had to offer. J. The annual staff has spent much time and tal- ent to produce a yearbook the stu- dents of BHS could enjoy. There are many people who have helped us in making this annual and deserve much credit for its publication. Mrs. Jim Leinster, our advisor, for her guiding hand; Mr. Frank Arnette, our representative from Delmar, for his efforts in com- municating with our printing com- pany; Coach Deal and the graph- optics class, for without them we were nothing; the Faculty and Ad- ministration for their patience and understanding in our deadlines; the staff who gave so much to pro- duce this yearbook; and finally the student body for creating a year worth telling. Marcia Martin Editor 165 166 Faithful and true-hearted, Let us boost for our old high. We revere her and defend her, As her colors proudly fly. We will stand for her united: Of her deeds we'll proudly tell. Her colors streaming, Glad faces beaming, So here’s acheer for her, That we all love so well. Joyous and ever loyal, Let us boost for our old high. Let every heart sing, Let every voice ring; There’s no time to grieve or sigh. It’s ever onward our course pursuing, May defeat ne’er our ardor cool, But united we will boost for Our Brevard High School. 167 168 PRR eens penne ere As the year comes to an end, we pause a moment to take one final glance over 1973. We have given ourselves to BHS and have gained much. Many are ready to move into new scopes of living, others have found a pattern to follow, while all of us have matured through acting and reacting together. 1973 was unique — nothing can ever be quite the same. But more important than the past, is the future. Hopefully tomorrow will hold all the happi- ness of this year and more. It was a very good year when we were together in 1973. 169 MILLER’S LAUNDRY CLEANERS, INC. 343 King Street Telephone 883-5591 Brevard Large Enough To Know, Small Enough To Care Colonel Sanders’ KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN 170 Advertisements Compliments of CO-ED THEATRE AND BREVARD DRIVE-IN THEATRE root.
