M3 C SlEmRDIER BREVARD NORTH CAROLINA VOLUME XX I We Dedicate to You. . . CLIFFORD L. BROOKSHIRE The 1964 BREVARDIER During his four years at Brevard High School, Coach Brookshire has contributed immeasurably to the every- day life of each student and to our school ' s standing. Each year he has had a winning football team; being Western Carolina Champions three years. Aside from his tremendous success with his boys on the gridiron, he has greatly promoted their spiritual and moral growth. In other words, you. Coach Brookshire, are the ideal of every student in friendliness and proper spirit. 2 CONTENTS Administration 6 Faculty and Curriculum 8 School Life 23 Seniors 33 Juniors 56 Sophomores 64 Activities 71 Sports 89 Features 105 Advertisements 1 1 5 3 BREVARD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4 The staff of the 1 964 BREVARDIER presents for you a pictorial record of the innumerable pleasures and educational opportunities that you have enjoyed this school year at Brevard High. We challenge you to maintain your exuberance and to meet the future with greatness . . . 5 ADMINISTRATION Efficient, personal, and fair are the words which best de- scribe our new administration. Under the direction of Mr. N. A. Miller, Jr., and with the help of Assistant Principal Bob Arm- strong, the new administration began setting up last summer for the immense task of taking care of six hundred and ninety stu- dents, a record number at Brev- ard Senior High. Emphasis has been placed upon student responsibility. Stu- dents are on the honor system and there are no demerits or correction hall. For the first time homeroom is co-ed and activity period is in the afternoon. Mr. N. A. Miller Jr., our new principal, chats informally with some of the students in the hall. Mrs. F. B. Cudd and her assistants keep the office running smoothly. 6 Mr. Wayne Bradburn, superintendent of Transylvania County schools, is often seen looking in on the classes at B.ff.S. Mrs. Dewey Lovender, guidance counselor, and her Mrs. Wolfgang Selle, work with information on the oll-too-fomiliar College Board tests. secretary. Coach Bob Armstrong, Assistant Principal; Mrs. C. K. Olson, Supervisor; Mrs. James Brown, Supervisor ' s secretary. 7 ENGLISH The English program consists of courses and activities designed to develop the skills of read- ing, writing, speaking, and listening. English helps to enrich the life of the individual by developing personal satisfaction in reading, creative expres- sion, and dramatization. All students are required to take one course in English each year. For the first time special classes are offered to advanced students in all three grades. In one of her Sophomore English classes. Miss Theodosia Sproles looks on as a student gives an oral book report. 8 ilHIHL i The King and I is acted out by members of one of Mrs. Jock Trantham ' s Sophomore English classes. Miss Mary K. Scott, a new Senior English teacher at B.H.S., lectures one of her classes on English Literature. 9 Mrs. Jimmy Sledge gives individual attention to each of her French students. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Besides being a competent Spanish teacher, Mrs. Ray Winchester is also an able mechanic! To teach the student to understand, speak, read, and write another language, in that order, is the purpose of the Foreign Language Department. Both the teac hers and students have been greatly aided by the new language lab. To some extent history, customs, and culture of the respec- tive countries are taught and considered important. 10 Mrs. Glenn Galloway helps students find material for their science reports. At lastll The back room of the library is revealed to all! LIBRARY The library at Brevard Senior High tries to have available at all times books that the student can use for re- search as well as enjoyment. Library Instruction is taught to all sophomores in the hope that they will use this knowledge throughout school and their adult life. The library subscribes to many per- iodicals, newspapers, and magazines so that world, state, and national news may be read about first hand and in detail. I Throughout the day Mrs. Glenn Galloway gets much help from her library assistants. 11 MATHEMATICS This angle is a what? — a familiar expression in Mrs. E. F. Tilson ' s Solid Geometry and Trigonometry class. In their first year at B.H.S., students are taught by competent teachers to reason with the fundamentals they already know. Then, if they choose, students may go on to higher math and advanced courses to aid them in either college or business. Mrs. George Abercrombie helps students with their Algebra II as- signments. lil ,L 12 The two girls in Mr. Robert Daniel ' s Mechanical Drawing class explain the construction of a house to the rest of the students. Students in Mrs. Tilson ' s Algebra II class have to work out the problems they don ' t under- When someone has trouble explaining a Plane Geometry problem, Mrs. Robert Andrews stand on the blackboard. takes over. 13 SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies is becoming more important in our school, because the world is getting smaller, and news is more widespread. World History promotes understanding of peo- ple of other countries, past and present. American History teaches each student his own country ' s glorious past and instills him with the responsibili- ties and privileges of citizenship. The American Observer is read and discussed in Mrs. Sam Brewton ' s History III classes. Debates are an interesting diversion in Mr. Robert Anderson ' s History III classes. Students in Mr. Ray Simpson ' s History II class listen to a lecture on Ancient History. 14 Research work is a frequent and important part of Mr. Simpson ' s economics classes. Mrs. Willis Brittain helps her geography students learn more about the world. Mr. Anderson presents his students an interesting view of World History. 15 ! SCIENCE Oral reports are an Interesting part of Mrs. Fulton Holliday s Advanced Biology class. To enable future adults to live in this new scien- tific age, whether their knowledge is basic or de- tailed, is the purpose of the Science Department at B.H.S. If a student desires detailed knowledge, there are three advanced courses taught in addition to the regular classes. Coach London Deal looks on as his Chemistry students attempt to perform a successful experiment. Physics, taught by Coach Deal, can be applied to everyday life in many ways. Mr. John Matthews ' Special Physics class finds the height of various objects around the schoot by measuring the shadows. 17 BUSINESS The business courses offered at Brevard Senior High not only enable students to get jobs in the future, but are also a service department to their school in the present. The courses offered are typing, shorthand, bookkeeping. Business English, Business Math, and Busi- ness Machines. Typing II, taught by Miss Jackie McNabb, teaches students de- tailed typing. Students learn the parts of the machine as well as how to type in Mrs. John Verner ' s Typing I class. In Miss McNabb ' s Shorthand II class, the stu- dents take dictation from oral reports given by members of the class. Mrs. John Thompson shows the values of bookkeeping. t ’[ f :l Several new adding and calculating machines have been added to the office machines room. 18 II PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical fitness tests are given regularly during the year in Coach Cliff Brookshire ' s Physical Education classes. . . and you kick it like this. Mrs. Andrews teaches her students how to play soccer in Phys. Ed. DRIVERS Mr. Johnson, please. I ' d rather do it myselfl EDUCATION Coach Jim Johnson s classroom dis- cussions in Drivers Education are made interesting as well as informa- tive. 19 AGRICULTURE Beecher Carl Allison had the Transylvania County champion steer at the Western North Carolina Fatstock Show and Sale. He re- ceived a blue ribbon and twenty-five dollars in prize money. Mr. Lyday ' s agriculture boys performed a great service to the school by building the press box used during football games. HOME ECONOMICS A new course, Home Economics I, was taught by Mrs. Glenn Burrell this year. 20 Copper tooling was one of the many interesting things done in Home Economics this year. VOCATIONS Music Appreciation, taught by Mr. John D. Eversman, furthers the students ' enjoyment and knowledge of music. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS English 4 units Mathematics 2 units Natural Science 2 units Social Science 2 units Physical Education 1 unit Electives 7 units The three course areas offered are Vocational, Com mercial, and Pre-college . Mr. Miller, please excuse Raymond ' s absence as he was ill and could not attend school. That ' s what you get for throwing water balloons, StevenI 31 32 33 MRS. ERNEST TILSON-class sponsor. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS, from LEFT TO RIGHT: Danny Shook, president; Mike Metcolf, vice-president; Lloyd Fisher, secretary; and Sharon Richards, treasurer. Hopefully, seniors await college board scores. Seniors As the gates of Brevard Senior High close slov ly behind us, we, as seniors, pause to look back and to contemplate. The joys, the sorrows, the rapture and the heartaches— these in retrospect are memories for- ever. During this year we have become sentimental, realiz- ing that each task would be our last at B. H. S. With each difficulty we have become more mature and have endeavored to prepare ourselves for the coming years. As a class we have set high standards— standards which we hope the upcoming seniors will continue to uphold. W ith graduation we shall reach a most meaningful goal in our lives. We shall then begin striving to attain future goals of becoming outstanding citizens and leaders of tomorrow. 34 Jo Ann Alderman Cary Wayne Alexander Sylvia Elaine Allison SENIOR CLASS 1964 Jerry Michael Arnold Sharon Gail Ashworth Bobbie J eon Atkinson Louise Helen Atwell 35 Mary Elayne Baines Barbara Nanette Ball George Richard Ballard James William Banther Flavius Edward Barnett Evelyn Barton Languin Leora Baynard SENIORS David Larry Baynard Doris Judith Beddingfield James Russell Benjamin Dennis Reid Bishop Leroy Smith Bishop Frank Radford Bramlett Linda Sue Brock Carlettia Ann Brown Betty Jo Brown Donald Fred Brown Joseph Paul Brown Thomas Earle Bryant Sandra Lee Bryson Glendon Thomas Burrell 1964 Sandra Faye Callender Joan Camenzind Harry Truman Coleman Mary Jean Coleman Gwendolyn Kay Cox Mary Louise Dale Ann Faye Danner 37 Carolyn Geneva Dellinger Carole Ann Dillingham Dennis David Ducker Harold Thomas Ellis Lloyd Gene Fisher Wallace King Foster James Rodney Franks SENIORS Joyce Frizzell Clyde Nicholas Gaddy Ella Mae Galloway Roger Dale Galloway Thomas Alfred Garren Dwight LaVerne Gash Wayne Houston Glazener f 38 Anita Joan Goings Larry Ray Gordon John Andrew Gosnell Larry Eugene Graham Jerry Russell Gravley Mack Allan Gray Charles Ray Grogan 1964 Doris Elaine Groves Donald Kenneth Haehnel Linda Mae Hall Anne Rutledge Hamerschlag Carroll Paul Hamilton Brigitta Hargis Wilma Grace Heath 39 Linda Gail Hemphill Carolyn Ann Henderson Barbara Ann Holden Dottie Gaye Hooper Glenda Ann Hudgins James Ernest Huggins Patricia Leigh Huggins SENIORS William Jackson Hutchins Edith Roberta Hutchinson Helen Jean Hutchinson Donna Lee irby David Jerry Israel Sheila Clarice Jackson Mary Lou Johnson 40 Robert Steve King Larry Verdell Kinsey Steven Kropelnicki, Jr. 1964 Charles Michael Johnson Oliver Manuel Johnson Moyce Joe Jones Patsy Novella Jones Melba Jean Lance Edith Leatherwood Frances Lloyd Richard Edward Loftis Annie Mae Masters William Marcus Medford Sherron Diane Medford Charles Riley Merrill 42 Edith Alice McCall Gwendolyn McCall Florence Geraldine McCrary Donald Ray McGaha Sallie Gordon McLarty Sue Carol Newsome Howard Pearson Nicholson 1964 Mary Jane Nicholson Martha Lee Norman Susan Rebecca Norris Cheryl Jean Orr Linda Sue Osborne Maren Ostborg Theodore David Ormand 43 Doris Elaine Owenby Jo Ann O ' Shields Raymond Paul Palmer Kenneth Byrd Parker Lynda Frances Patterson SENIORS John Howard Peterson Constance Gail Pressley Marty Gerald Pressley 44 Sharon Elizabeth Richards Paul Nathan Roberts Charles Ray Saleeby James Gregory Sentelle Johnny K Sentelle ne Shook Robert Wayne Shook Jane Frances Shuford James Kenneth Rogers Linda Patricia Singleton ¥31 Tommy Coy Sitton Carolyn Joan Smith Betty Jeon Sorrells Lynne Margaret Strieker Stanley David Surrette Kenneth Lee Suttles Kathy Annette Siniard SENIORS Johnny Mickler Thomas Roger Charles Thurston Floyd Geary Tinsley Robert Jerry Tinsley Chorles William Tritt Linda Faye Waldrop Ronnie Kay Waldrop 46 Caro I Ann Walker John Spencer Walker Joseph Fred Wallin Roberta Arlene White Troy Lefoy Whitlock Sharon Kay Whitmire General Ned Whitmire 1964 Marvin Craig Wilkes Bonnie Ruth Wilson Lindsey Edward Wynn Nancy Jo Yaeger Garry Rubin Young NOT PICTURED Linda Dale Allen Thomas Edward Allison Kenneth Richard Baughn James Edward Bracken Tommy Joe Brissey Harris Keith Bryson Lewis Everette Frady Winfred Galloway Paula Evelyn Greenwood Wayne Gilbert Hunter Alvin Leon Tinsley Charles Edward White Clyde Marion Wilson 47 BEST ALL AROUND Sharon Ashworth Rodney Franks PERSONALITY PLUS Carole Dillingham Gene Graham BEST LOOKING Ruth Wilson Roger Galloway 48 SENIOR SUPERLATIVES FRIENDLIEST Edith Raines Kenny Parker NOTICE f DD NDT fEEO ,N0R MOLEST FISH WITTIEST Becky Babb Lewis Frady MOST ORIGINAL Joan Camenzind Raymond Palmer MOST COURTEOUS Ann Danner David Israel 49 MOST INTELLECTUAL Linda Hemphill Steven Kropelnicki MOST TALENTED Sharon Richards Tommy Bryant MOST DRAMATIC Nancy Yaeger Dennis Decker BEST LEADERS Mary Dale Floyd Tinsley 50 Senior Directory JO ANN ALDERMAN Basketball 2,3, Co-Captain 4; Monogram Club 3,4; Junior Play 3; Spanish Club 2; Annual Staff 4; Senior Superlative 4; N.E.D.T. The class of ' 65 has advanced one notch up the ladder toward their ultimate goal of graduation. Their formula for a memorable year was enthusiasm plus spirited participation in B.H.S. ' s many activities. School dances and diversified sports found this eager and versatile class always ready to join the. fun. Take Your Medicine, the junior class play, was most successfully presented by enthusiastic members of the class. Learning responsibility, making decisions, and readily applying themselves to different tasks have been only a few of this class ' s accomplishments. In the fall of 1963, the newest addition to BSHS stared in bewilderment at the walls of their school, wondering what was in store for them. Through the year they found that higher education required study- ing a little harder, a little longer, and a little more often. BSH required hard work, but it also offered many memorable moments of laughter and friendship. There were cries from the teacher, I thought Julius Caesar was a tragedy! — and from the students, Are you sure this frog has a heart? Ricky Skerrett, presicJent; Barbara Summey, vice-president; Ann Blythe, The Sophomore ' s initiating year was one of quite a few firsts for their class. Among these firsts were being under the leadership of a new administration, their introduction to the honor system, and attending college night, previously a Senior only affair. Struggling with the many problems of becoming oriented into high school life, the class of 1966 has proved acceptable and shows promise of being a great asset to BSHS. 64 CLASS OF 1966 Jim Alderman Deborah Allen Danny Allender Jerry Allison Mary Ina Anderson Jacquie Andrews Zonie Ashe Lee Atwell Shirley Ayers David Babb Linda Baines Merle Baldwin Ann Ball McArthur Ballard Patricia Ballard Patsy Ballard Brenda Barton Cleve Barton Harold Barton Lee Barton Gerald Baumgarner Joyce Baumgarner Linda Benson Randy Blackwell Martha Bloomquist Judy Blythe Norman Blythe Jerry Bracken Nancy Bradley David Briggs Clara Bryson Shirley Buchannan Betty Sue Britt Charles Butterworth Dorothy Cagle Walter Clayton Ricky Chappell Delores Chappell Steve Case Larry Cash Patricia Cantrell David Campbell Bubby C amenzind Judy Cairnes 65 U A Kay Cochran Randall Coleman Terry Collins Bob Colwell Bobby Cooper Jane Coward Doris Curlee Mary Davis Sharon De Muth Dickie Dixon Kenny Dockens Lee Dunlop Ava Elliot Jean English Lynn Erwin Marshall Feaster Gary Fisher Sharon Fletcher Barbara Foote Linda Fortune SOPHOMORES Calvin Frady Phillip Frady Lawrence Gaddy Marilyn Garren Billy Gillespie Becky Gravely Fred Gravely Suzanne Gravely Gilbert Gray Jo Ann Gray Larry Hamilton Linda Hamilton Lois Ann Harris Richard Harris Wayne Heath Billy Griffin Norman Griffin Frances Grogan Gail Hall Charlie Hamilton 66 Jackie Hensley Joe Hensley Ray Henson Gary Himes William Holden Gail Holsey Gerold Honeycutt Marla Hooper Joe Hudgins Mary Ann Hughey Mike Irby Vance Jackson Julia Johnson Mike Johnson Molly Johnson Elizabeth Jones Jimmy Jones Judy Jones Joyce Keaton Brock Kitchen CLASS OF 1966 Morris Kitchen David Lance Doris Lance Harry Lance Ronnie Lance Ann Lankford Larry Lea Beth Lee George Leopard Gatha Long Clyde Lyda Maxine Lyday Mary Ann Lynch John Mackey Linda Mackey Martha Mackey Gary Madison Becky Mann Pat Mann Barbara Marcum 67 Dana Mason Harold Mathis Barbara McCall Bobby McCall Maxine McCall Pat McCall Sharon McCall Thomas McCall Tommy McCall June McCauley Dale McCrary Walter McGaha Guyma Merrill Mercedes Miguel Mike Miguel Mike Miller Rock Miller Vernon Miller Janice Mills Vikki Mills SOPHOMORES ' i Pat Mitchell Charles Moody Doug Moore Sandy Moretz Sandy Newton Arnold Nicholson Janice Nix June Orr Johnny O ' Shields Charles Owen Joyce Owen Linda Owen Sandra Owen Jo Ann Pace Paula Palmer Judy Parker Sammy Parker Sharon Parker Brenda Peevy Tommy Poor 68 Edith Powell John Pressly Johnny Pressly Lynn Pressly David Queen Millie Rahn Steve Rahn Gene Ramsey Billy Reese Jimmy Reese Ronnie Reid Donald Riddle Pam Riddle Sharon Roberts Alvis Robinson Judy Robinson Pat Rogers Barbara Roland Freddy Sader Teresa Sanders CLASS OF 1966 Jimmy Schlosser Billy Scott Lena Scott Harold Severs Larry Sherrill Davis Shiflet William Shipman Belinda Shook Brenda Shook Sharon Silvers Jamie Simpson Gaston Siniard Ray Siniard Noranda Sitton Ricky Skerrett Roger Smothers Sheila Smothers Charles Smith Clara Smith Maggie Smith 69 Thomas Smith Walter Smith Helen Sorrells Elaine Spicer Leslie Spohn Johnny Sprouse Robert Stephens Gloria Stiwinter Jenell Strickland Barbara Summey Pete Surrette Johnny Settles Larry Swann Patsy Teague Johnny Tinsley Willa Mae Tinsley Ricky Trent Glenda Tucker Tim Valentine Wayne Watson Edith West Carolyn Whitener Ina Lee Whitmire Steve Whitmire Neva Whiteside Kenneth Wilkes Kenneth Wilson Bill Williams Linda Williams Sharon Williams SOPHOMORES ] I Doris Wilson Harry Wilson Robert Wilson Geraldine Woody Steve Wynn NOT PICTURED Wanda Blythe Eddie Huey Nancy McCall Tommy Merrill Larry Owen 70 Brevard High School Band bl 1 iU 1 CC ■ O B ■ J ROW 1: L Strieker, J. Football Our Brevard High School Blue Devils have again brought us victory. The N.C. Western AAA Co-Cham- pions was the title proudly brought home by a tri- umphant team. Due to the competent leadership of Coaches Brook- shire, Armstrong, and Johnson, the Blue Devils was the only team in Blue Ridge Conference competition to go undefeated in regular seasonal play in 1963. In their second meeting with East Forsythe, for the semi-district play-off game, the Devils soundly trounced the Eagles 13-0. The following week, Brevard and Reidsville battled to a 0-0 tie, and shared the crown. As can plainly be seen, ambition and ability char- acterized our 1963 co-champs. This past year has probably seen a collection of the best potential for basketball material it will see for some time. Each boy possessed a great deal of talent. The complete student body has a team to be proud of. It is not the winning that counts; but how you play the game. ' He flies through the air with the greatest of ease . .
