Bradburn, County Superintendent, and Mr. N. A. Miller, County Supervisor, are often seen In the lunch room. The office staff aids Mrs. F. B. Cudd, school secretary, in routine work throughout the school year. Students receive valuable aid from Mrs. Wolfgang Selle who processes tran- scripts and distributes informative handbooks. Mrs. Dewey Lavender, guidance counselor assists stu- lents in college and job placements. 7 7 1 i «m LANGUAGES Julius Caesar was re-enacted for the B. H. S. students by pro- fessional actors. Mrs. R. T. Kimzey ' s projector shows senior English stu- dents the do ' s and don ' ts of grammar. Spanish is taught by Mrs. Ray Win- chester, who returned to BSHS this year. Students in Mr. Michael Pritchett ' s Eng- lish classes not only read their litera- ture but also listen to it. Mrs. Jimmy Sledge emphasizes French translation in her classes. 8 One of the most interesting classes at B. H. S. is Sophomore English taught by Mrs. Jack Trantham. Spanish III was offered for the first time this year. 9 MATHEMATICS Mrs. E. F. Tilson helps students understand solid geometry by showing them three-dimensional figures. Geometry is capably taught by Mrs. Robert Andrews who also instructs two classes in Phy. Ed. 10 Mrs. George Abercrombie teaches bookkeeping, business math, and Algebra II. 11 Not only the coaching staff but also the biology students welcomed Coach Bob Armstrong this year. Mr. Glenn F. Bartle teaches a special two-hour chemistry class, enabling the brighter science-minded students to further their studies. Even though he lacks adequate equip- ment Coach Deal does a fine job in giving his students a well-rounded knowledge of physics. 12 Students enjoy the relaxed, informal atmos- phere of Mrs. Fulton Holliday ' s biology classes. I hope it tastes better than it smells. 13 14 x i Port left, starboard right, or is it the other way around? 15 V. BUSINESS Preparing students for the college and business world is the role of Mrs. John Verner, typing instructor. Future secretaries are taught the man- uel art of office machines by Mrs. John Thompson. Quick, somebody turn this thing off! 16 DRIVERS EDUCATION Typical highway situations are staged by Mr. James Johnson on his magnetic board. AGRICULTURE Besides learning manual skills, the boys of Mr. Lyday ' s classes also improve school facilities. Somebody sure loves Alice! Mr. Randal Lyday keeps a watchful eye over his boys ' accuracy. During football season, Mr. John D. Eversman is busily engaged planning field shows. MUSIC Mrs. Verne Hill uses her musical talents to further vocal interest at B.H.S. Mr. Charles Glass is invaluable to the music department. LIBRARY Efficiency is the motto of Mrs. Alma Galloway, school librarian, and her staff. Nursing, offered for the first time this year, is taught by Mrs. Ben Patterson. In addition to learning sewing and cooking. Home Ec. girls study child care under Mrs. Glenn Burrell. HOME ECONOMICS Hurrah for T.V. dinnersl 19 PHYSICAL harder . . . and harder . . . and harder. 20 MEET THE rQag( c(XSTer Too bad the poster committee doesn ' t write the Broadcaster! SECRETARY-TREASURER Monica Driscoll Class Colors: BLUE AND WHITE Class Flower: MOUNTAIN LAUREL VICE-PRESIDENT John Dickson Proud seniors at last! Twelve long years of learning and bewilder- ment come to an end. At gradua- tion we will forfeit our position for varied careers, taking our first step into a future filled with promise. Our senior class, being a versatile one, possesses artistic, scholastic, and athletic abilities which will make us leading citizens of the future. Now that our time has come to leave Brevard High, we treasure the memory of the past, the new friends we have made, and the old ones we shall never forget. Our lives are just beginning. We will graduate as capable adults with the vital incentive to meet the challenges and obligations of the future, whatever they may be. 32 PHILIP JORDAN ADAMS GWENDOLYN ANNE ALLEN MARGARET ELIZABETH ALLISON MARY LOUISE ALLISON MARY EDITH ANDERS ROY NELSON ASHE JANICE TAYLOR ASHWORTH Seniors FRANCIS BRETT AYERS AUGUSTUS LANE BAGWELL 1963 STANLEY THOMAS BAHNSEN MICHAEL BAKER 33 ilfti JERRY LANE BALLARD JOSEPH THOMAS BLACKWELL JUNE LEE BRACKEN LEROY CLINTON BRACKEN PATRICIA ANN BRADBURN CAROLYN JANE BROWN LYNNE WYLIE BROWNELL Seniors MICHAEL FLOYD BRYSON DORIS REBECCA BURCH MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Lynne Brownell and Bruce Wauchope 34 Vi CHARLES ALBERT BURNETTE REBECCA ANGELYN BURNS HAROLD LEWIS BURREL BARBARA FAYE CLARK 1963 DOROTHY JEAN CLARK GEORGE MICHAEL CLARK AUNDRIA LEE CLINE CARL MONROE COLLINS JERRY BEDFORD COLLINS BEST LEADERS Monica Driscoll and Bob Morley 35 WILLIAM BRADLEY COMBS LARRY EARL CORN CHARLES STEWARD COOK, JR. Leadership, friendship, and sportsmanship are just a few of the many worthy qualities the class of 1964 has demonstrated. Their academic rating is high, and their knowledge has been challenged in many advanced classes. Hard work was transformed into fun and benefit when the juniors united to produce their successful play, And Came the Spring . Profits from their play provided for the Junior-Senior which again demonstrated their organizational activities. In both sports and spirit, B. H. S. has been well supplied by mem- bers of the Junior Class. Their first class meeting and the choosing of their class rings were an indication of the individualism and independence of the class of 1964. Newly aware of responsibility, the juniors are learning to make decisions that will vitally affect their future. 54 Carey Alexander Jo Ann Alderman Elaine Allison Jerry Arnold Sharon Ashworth Bobbie Atkinson Louise Atwell Carolyn Ayers Andrea Bahnsen Elayne Baines James Banther Eddie Barnett Evelyn Barton Kenny Baughn Larry Baynard Languin Baynard Judy Beddingfield Dennis Bishop LeRoy Bishop James Bracken Rad Bramlett Tommy Brissey Linda Brock Ann Brown Betty Brown Don Brown Tomm” Bryant Keith Bryson Sandra Bryson Tommy Burrell Sandra Callender Joan Camenzind Mary Jean Coleman Kay Cox Mary Dale Ann Danner 1964 55 CLASS OF Carole Ann Dillingham Dennis Ducker Linda Durant Harold Ellis Lloyd Fisher Sonny Foster Lewis Frady Rodney Franks Joyce Frizzell Clyde Gaddy Ella Mae Galloway Roger Galloway Winfred Galloway Tommy Garren Wayne Glazener Anita Goings Larry Gordon John Gosnell Gene Graham Jerry Graveley Shirley Gravley Mac Gray Charles Grogan Doris Groves Don Haehnel Linda Hall Anne Hamerschlag Carroll H ami Iton Brigitta Hargis Brenda Harris Bill Harrison Wilma Heath Linda Hemphill Carolyn Henderson Barbara Hensley Barbara Holden 56 1964 Nancy Holden Richard Holden Dottie Hooper Glenda Hudgins Ernest Huggins Pat Huggins Wayne Hunter Jackie Hutchins Donna Irby David Israel Sheila Jackson Mickey Johnson Moyce Jones Larry Kinsey Bob King Melba Lance Edith Leatherwood Dickie Loftis Jeanette Lowery Spencer Macfie Brenda Manley Annie Mae Masters Bobby McBee Edith McCall Gwen McCall Geraldine McCrary Donald McGaha Sallie McLarty Bill Medford Charles Merrill Joy Merrill Larry Merrill Raymond Merrill Mike Metcalf Mary Kathryn Moffitt Robert Moore 57 CLASS OF Frank Murr Cha rles Myers Susan Myers Sue Newsom Howard Nicholson Mary Jane Nicholson Susan Norris Teddy Ormand Cheryl Orr Cora Orr Wanda Orr Linda Osborne Bobby Owen Doris Owenby Raymond Palmer Kenny Parker Lynda Patterson Mary Alice Patterson Johnny Peterson Gail Pressley Marty Pressley Dick Queen Edith Raines Cynthia Ramsey Sharon Richards Shirley Rigdon Nathan Roberts Cheryle Robinson Jimmy Rogers Charles Saleeby Ann Schmidt Paul Scruggs Jimmy Sentelle Johnny Sentelle Danny Shook Wayne Shook II I llifcltfc 58 1964 Jane Shuford Julia Shuford Pat Singleton Kathy Siniard Tommy Sitton Carolyn Smith Betty Sorrells Lynne Strieker Stanley Surrette Kenny Suttles Johnny Thomas Roger Thurston Floyd Tinsley Jerry Tinsley Lynn Trantham Charles T ritt Linda Waldrop Ronnie Waldrop Carol Walker Johnny Walker Joe Wallin Becky Warren Roberta White Troy Whitlock Kay Whitmire Ned Whitmire Clyde Wilson Ruth Wilson Nancy Yaeger Garry Young NOT PICTURED Becky Babb Lois Morris JoAnn O ' Shields Joyce Parrish Alvin Tinsley 59 SHERRY FINLEY President SOPHOMORE CLASS ROBBIE SALES Vice-President Unaccustomed to the rigors of high school, the sophomore class undertook the challenge set by their predecessors in their stride. Easily orientated into their new way of life, the class of 1965 has encountered many firsts which have broadened their viewpoints, increased their maturity, and furthered their know- ledge. The sophomores were introduced to one of the Shakespearian tragedies and undertook their annual search for coni- fers. Geometry, previously tackled only by juniors, became available to a select group of sophomores. Their first year is distinctive as one of progress, and we expect them to surpass themselves in the years to come. On the drill field, in the hot practice room, or in their homes, the band members should certainly be commended for a hard job well done. Each year the members of the B. H. S. band par- John D. EVERSMAN, Director Charles B. GLASS, Assistant Director ticipate in many activities. During the past year they marched in several parades and at football games, en- tered Western North Carolina and state competitions, and presented several concerts to the student body. Let ' s all tip our hats off to John D. Eversman, Charles Glass, and the whole 1962-63 B.H.S. Band for giving us a band of which we can certainly be proud. 66 The Band Council makes all of the important decisions. They are as follows: Dottie Hooper, Mr. Charles Glass, Assistant Director Betty Ann Schranz, Carole Dillingham, Lynne Strieker, Karen Galloway, Mike Hunter, Tommy Bryant, SEATED: Mr. John D. Much credit is due Mrs. Verne Hill in that she has taken a group of average students and turned their sometimes off-key voices into one harmonious sound which has kept the student body at various times com- pletely spellbound. This tiresome job has taken much patience and stamina. We say thank you to the entire Glee Club for many wonderful programs. 69 ' listens ' to Senior English — Journalism class lecture on Romantic Period. Staff compares notes on copy for fourih edition. 70 STAFF There are going to be some changes made were the first words heard at B. H. S. where journalism was concerned. Indeed, the first issue was different. Beginning with Mr. Michael Pritchett, the new advisor, who had quite a job cut out for him trying to keep up with the fine mark made by Mrs. R. T. Kimzey during her past twenty years of valuable service, the BROADCASTER with its 1963 staff unearthed a new outlook on journalism. The staff was particularly fortunate in having capable business manag- ers. Art and wit were expressed in in- genious, eye-catching posters throughout the year. By increasing the number of publications this year, the news was kept more up-to- date. Feature articles— always interesting— were more numerous. For news, announce- ments, humor, and a few minutes away from class we thank the BROADCASTER staff. Members of staff checking over ideas of last years paper. Mr. Pritchett, advisor, goes over last issue ' s troubles with Bruce Wauchope, editor. 71 Mrs. Jack Trantham, advisor, and Monica Driscoll, editor, check and recheck all divisions. Sports co-editors, Jim Fortune and Connie Dickson, try to get a picture of everyone on the team. For the past year thirteen students have worked to- gether, striving to obtain one goal. At last we can say WE DID IT! We added another annual to the life at B. S. H. S. During the first semester of school we struggled with advertisements, pictures, copy, layouts, deadlines, finances, and each other. When the time came for us to meet deadlines it seemed that our days became shorter and shorter. Each time that we were in trouble, we Ruth Zachary, circulation editor and typist, and Janice Goings, business manager, try to get the money to balance with the receipts. always seemed to pull through, with the help of fellow staff members and our advisor, Mrs. Jack Trantham. Our speeches rounded out the year. Preparing them was hard, but as the year passed by we became fully interested in public speaking. All in all, the time that we have spent in preparing the Brevardier will be looked back on in future years as the highlight of our high school career. School life co-editors. Bob Morley and Margaret Pillov plan an interesting candid shot. 72 Annual staff members, in their spare time, try to better their speeches through a public speaking course. ANNUAL STAFF Mary Morrow, features editor, and Faye Green, activities editor, help Margaret Schlosser, underclassmen editor, arrange her sophomore pictures. Senior co-editors, Janice Rigdon and Judi Dechant recheck the senior directory. Jim Rickards, layout editor, and Ronnie Shuford, advertising manager, compare a layout to previous annuals. 73 STUDENT COUNCIL Among the many activities of the Stu- dent Council, some of the most outstand- ing have been the upkeep of the school store, morning devotions, selecting the students of the month, and putting on very impressive election campaigns. Throughout the year the Student Coun- cil, sponsored by Mrs. Fulton Holiday, has done a magnificent job in repre- senting the Student Body. Santa couldn ' t get a hall permit. Officers from left to right are Joyce Frizzell, secretary; Reger Owen, president; David Israel, vice-president; John Dickson, treasurer. 74 Promoting knowledge of the French language and the people who speak it has been the main interest and purpose of the French Club. The club, with the invaluable aid of its advisor, Mrs. Lucille Sledge, has at various times obtained interest- ing speakers for its meetings. At Christmas, club mem- bers made and sent cards to the confined persons in SPANISH CLUB Comprised of sixty-five members, the Spanish Club at B. H. S. is a group of hardworking, interested students who hope to bring non-members an awareness and understanding of our southern neighbors and their European counterparts. A number of interesting projects were carried out by the various committees, climaxed in the spring by an assembly program and a banquet. The Spanish Club, led by Mrs. Ray Winchester, is certainly a welcome addition to our ac- tivities and we look confidently toward its future development. the Transylvania Community Hospital. One interesting thing throughout the year, other than the informative programs, has been that all of the parliamentary procedure during the meetings was con- ducted in French. It is certain that the future of the French Club at B. H. S. has been well molded. Spanish club members search for new ideas for posters. OFFICERS: Monica Driscoll, President; Ann Hammerschlag, Vice-President; Lorraine Ashworth, Secretary- Treasurer. 75 BETA CLUB Founded in 1933, the Beta Club is a national leadership-service organization for high school stu- dents. To obtain membership one must meet certain scholastic re- quirements and general merit quali- fications which help in the develop- ment of initiative and leadership in its members. Among the activities of the Beta Club, supervised by Mrs. Willis Brit- tain, are a student tutoring service offered to students needing assis- tance, an annual picnic, and at- tendance of the State Convention in the spring. BETA CLUB: B. Wauchope, L. Strieker, M. Dale, S. Richards, J. Bennett, M. Hunter, C. Ramsey, J. Goings, M. Pillow, J. Davidson, D. Garren, B. Morley. BUS DRIVERS Bus drivers— drive buses. Behind the wheel early in the morning and after school hours, they have made an outsanding record of safe driving in Transylvania County. Their resourcefulness and dependability have certainly gained the admiration of all Brevard High Students. BUS DRIVERS: R. Wilson, B. Ryder, W. Ellis, T. Allison, J. Dickson, J. Galloway, H. King, J. Raffield, J. Richards, W. Combs, C. G. Gasque, J. Owens, C. Galloway, J. Reese, D. Owen, R. Corn, Grogan, B. Morley, M. Baker. 76 F. T. A. F.T.A. members are used as substitute teachers. From left to right are Betty Heath, treasurer; Mrs. Sledge, advisor; San- dra Landreth, Secretary; Ellen Schlunz, president; Aundria McGuire, vice- president. Under the able supervision of Mrs. Lucille Sledge, the F. T. A. promotes and stimulates the students ' interest toward teaching as a career. Through lectures and other forms of programs, different opportunities and new methods of teaching are discovered. The main goal this year has been to familiarize the members with the qualifications needed for different levels of teaching. This was very capably done with an open discussion by teachers from various grades in Transylvania County. The F. T. A. has certainly proved itself to be a profitable and enjoyable organization in which to participate. 77 F. H. A. OFFICERS: Pat Marcum, president; Kay Whitmire, vice-president; Bobbie Dotson, secretary; Ann Brogdon, treasurer; Mellie Gray, parliamentarian; Ann Danner, song leader. Being comprised of— as the name implies— future homemakers, the F. H. A. has striven to improve the homelife of the future. This year ' s central idea, the value of an education , was greatly stressed in many beneficial programs. Home, home on the range. Besides being profitable to its members, the F. H. A. also helped others through Christmas presents to a mental hospital and CARE packages to foreign countries. Truly, the F. H. A. at B. H. S. under the supervision of Mrs. Glenn Burrell will be beneficial to all those who have participated. 78 Another project of F. H. A. is serving at the F. F. A. ban- quet. F. F. A. F.F.A. OFFICERS, LEFT TO RIGHT: Roger Wilson, president; Roger Corn, vice president; Bert Rider, reporter; Hardie King, treasurer; Leroy Bracken, secretary. Jim Reese, not pictured, sentinel. Why don ' t we just get a U-Haul? Future Farmers of America. What do these words mean to you? The Brevard F. F. A. Chapter under the supervision of Mr. Randal Lyday has done more than any other group in encouraging responsibility, indi- viduality, and leadership among its members. Annually the Future Farmers sponsor the Father and Son Banquet. This year money was raised by making and selling mailbox posts and picnic tables and run- ning the concession stands at both football and basket- ball games. During the year each industrious member was re- quired to select an individual farm project and then maintain and keep an accurate record on it. Competition ran high on the land judging, crop and tool identification, public speaking, and beef and dairy judging teams throughout the year. If every club at B. H. S. accomplished as much as the F. F. A., our school would be ranked among the top in the nation. 79 BOOSTER CLUB Striving to promote school spirit in every way possible, the Booster Club, under the capable direction of Mrs. Bob Andrews, is a group of hard-working, enthusiastic girls. With an increased membership of 107, they have amply fulfilled the responsibility of folding and selling football programs, decorating goal posts, making shakers and posters, and sitting together in a body at pep rallies and games to insure a cheering section. Projects such as selling Blue Devil sweatshirts helped in the raising of money for the club ' s major event, the Sweetheart Ball. Thus, through many activities, the B. H. S. Booster Club has become the main source of inspiration for our teams, student body, and at many times, the town as a whole. I think we should put it there. Posters boosting school spirit is main project of the Booster Club. 80 MONOGRAM CLUB The Monogram Club The spirit behind the Monogram Club. Well, you can ' t sell them all) Under the superior sponsorship of Coach Cliff Brookshire, the Monogram Club has remained one of the best clubs at B.H.S., both as a work and a social club. The first may be seen in the sponsoring of football programs and in the promotion of a memori- al for the late Dr. Carl S. Plumb, Blue Devil physician. Socially the Monogram Club kept the pace with the Monogram Dance and, of course, the picnic — which has become synonymous with the word initiation. To become a member of the Monogram Club one must earn a letter in one of the major sports, and then, if possible, survive the initiation. 81 KEY CLUB Key Club officers are Leroy Bishop, secretary; John Dickson, presi- dent; Don Garren, treasurer; Lloyd Fisher, vice-president. But Benny, there aren ' t any jokesl The Key Club denotes service. This can be noted in the several projects carried out in order to better the school and community. Although service is the central goal,, social life is not entirely left out, as anyone who had the pleasure of go- ing to the Key Club dance knows. Choosing new members was not an easy job, for in order to qualify one must have shown leadership and aca- demic ability. He should also possess high moral standards. All of these standards are set by the Key Club International and its sponsor, the Kiwanis Clubs of America. With all of this as a foundation, the Key Club has remained high among clubs at B. S. H. S. during the past year. Brevard High School ' s Key Club. 82 FOOTBALL Our 1962 Western District AAA champions. For the second time in three years, the Brevard Blue Devils ad- vanced to the top in state football competition. Capturing the West- ern District AAA Championship title, they shared state honors with Rockingham. The Blue Devils opened their season September 7 on a new home field, a wonderful asset to the players and fans alike. That night the Devils emerged victorious winning 26-0 over Swain High. On October 12, the Blue Devils met their strongest opponent in regular season play. Enthusiastic football fans waited tensely until the beginning of the fourth quarter for the Blue Devils to score their win- ning touchdown against Enka. Defeat was never experienced by the Blue Devils, who won ten games of regular season play and two championship play-off games. The students at Brevard Senior High School take this opportunity to express their appreciation 1o the Blue Devils for an exciting season. 84 HEAD COACH Cliff Brookshire 85 JIM FORTUNE Co-Captain Fullback BUTCH SKERRET Co-Captain Tackle JERRY COLLINS Halfback Arrugh ...
