EVERSMAN Whether in the band room working out a half-time show for a football game, or in the lunch room selling lunch tickets Chief is there organizing cmd willing to do more than his share. Chief's right hand man is certainly the term for Charlie, for if a clarinet reed is broken, Charlie can fix it, or if someone's trumpet valves need oiling three minutes before concert time, Charlie is always there to help. These two faces have become two of the most familiar around Brevard High-their work never seems to end. ln the summer they not only work with the Senior Band to get it in shape for the fall season, but CHARLES B. GLASS they painstakingly train a iunior band so that a few of its members can graduate into the Senior Band in the fall. Even if a student is not in the band, he will see these two men, know. them and respect them im- mediately. Perhaps it is the high degree of organization that is evident wherever they are a part of an activity that demands this respect. Their outstanding work with the band has won them the respect and esteem of every B.H.S. student as well as the citizens of Transyl- vania County. So with grateful hearts, we, the seniors of nineteen- hundred and sixty-one, dedicate this volume of the BREVARDIER to you, Charles Glass and John Eversman. Page Two 'sitfiafi 1'ftf5'f?. s FOREWORD Our memories are precious to us and are some of our most valuable possessionsg yet how difficult it is to preserve these as we walk farther down the avenue of life. One needs something special to help retain these memories-something tangible to keep from forgetting those days of youth when a look was so important and a word so significant. lt is our hope that the following pages will be a guide to your dearest memories and an accurate record of Brevard Senior High School for the year 1960-1961. To the observer, the department is a smooth running, efficient organization sup- ervised by a group of well-qualified adults. Few of us realize the hard work and long hours that go into the running of B. H. S. Our administration realized that if Brevard High School were to produce ex- ceptional students, the curriculum would have to be enriched with new courses and better instructors. And, thanks to our acl- ministration, the dream has come true. Through time and effort, our school has become one of the best in Western North Carolina. s r Mrs. Dewey Lavender, Guidance Counselor: Mrs. Joseph Pickelsimer Guidance Secretary: Mrs. F. B. La Classe Francaise To speak a language fluently, be it his own native tongue or that of a foreigner's, should be the goal of every student, young or old. ln the high school cur- riculum, we students are given a preference of two foreign languages, French and Spanish, as well as the required English courses. With the help of excellent teachers, audio and visual aids, and modern up-to- date textbooks, we have the opportunity to become better acquainted with our heritage through the Ian- guages of our neighbors here at home and across the sea. nd? 4 B. The math department of B.H.S. ranks high in the esti- mation of educators in Western North Carolina. Excep- tional faculty cmd modern concepts in the field of mathematics are offered to the students. Among the challenging courses offered in our math department are: General Math, Business Math, Algebra I and Il, and Plane Geometry. This is the sigh of relief that can be heard from more than two hundred juniors who have walked through the corridors of B.H.S. for three years. From the first moments when they, as frightened freshmen, entered the doors of higher learning, their one desire has been to be the taunter rather than the taunted, the one who seems to accomplish rather than the one who often fails in the least of his efforts. Their junior year at Brevard High has been one filled with new opportunities and enioyment. For the first time they have had the responsibility of making their own decisions and were encouraged to choose the classes and extra-curricular activities that would be of most value to them in the future. Twenty-five iuniors were given the opportunity to demonstrate their dramatic skills in their class play, Onions in the Stew and offered the responsibility of the preparation and staging of the Junior-Senior Banquet. The class of '62 is well aware of the responsibility they must carry in the future and the name that must be upheld if future honors are to be bestowed upon Brevard High School. They have begun the mam- moth task of adiusting to high school lite. They have shown great potentiality academically, socially, and athletically. During the years they attend B.H.S. as students, they will gain much knowledge and they hope much wisdom, for they will find this knowledge worthless if they lack wisdom. With this thought in mind the little wise men,' have accepted the next three years of learning as a great challenge. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT ...... VICE-PRESIDENT . . , SECRETARY .... Did they beat Henderson- ville? These were some of the scattered remarks heard around B.H.S. last year after our forty piece high school band received a rating of Superior in the State Contest, Twelve members entered the contest and all twelve placed in the All State Band, with six of these playing the solo position of their section. They performed in cold, hot, and wet weather, but Assistant Director CHARLES B. GLASS yy. i CHOOL BAN nothing ever seemed to dampen their unsurpassed en- thusiasm. Organization ancl fun-these words are seldom re- lated unless you are thinking of the band. They dem- onstrated this constantly as they boosted our football and basketball teams on to many consecutive victories. Everyone profits from their talents, which are displayed well every month in the B. H. S. Broadcaster. Page Sixty-Five THE BREVARDIER With last year's book receiving first place at the Editors Roundtable we, the 1961 staff, had quite a reputation to uphold. In the l96l Brevardier, through pictures, copy, and lay- out the efforts of each member of the staff have been utilized in preparing a book with the interests and the pleasures of Brevard High School students in mind. At times preparing this book was trying and discouraging especially when we had a deadline and six weeks' tests on the same day. In spite of all the work and headaches, we have enioyed preparing this book. lt is the hope of the staff that these pages will help to keep alive for many years life at B. H.
