The climax has been in sharing the maiestic auditorium, the beautiful gymnasium, the friendly classrooms, and ia unity and spirit which were new to us. As we think about our many seemingly overpowering problems of homework and tests, they seem but trifles compared with the ioys, experiences, and rewards. We bequecftlt to those after us a deep res- pect for truth and an intense desire for know- ledge. Moy they obtain from their short time here all which we hold and cherish. Opportun- ities are boundless, may they be consumed. This year as lofty upperclassmen the class of '61 along with the rest of their school- mates, have experienced many of the be- wildering feelings of freshmen once again, for they have moved not only into a modern new building, nestled in a scenic setting, but into the confusion which accompanies any new situation. Its contributions, however, have not slowed down. Many iuniors participated in the first dramatic production presented in our new auditorium, a three-act comedy depict- ing the troubles of af sixteen year old girl, a situation with which the female half of the class of 61' is quite familiar. Its members con- tinued in athletics, in clubs, and on the Stu- dent Council, but with a new pride and feel- ing of loyalty toward Brevard High. The cli- max ofthe year came when the Junior-Senior, that loving gift bestowed annually to the lord- ly seniors, proved to be one of the greatest ever. Now with visions of assuming the role of almighty seniors next year and with hum- ble memories ofthe agonies of underclassmen, the class of '61 eagerly awaits the surmount- ing of the fourth and final ste in the stairwa P Y of education at Brevard High School. With the newspapers they put out this year, how can they miss? All the enthusiasm and excitement of the school's activities were reflected in every publication. Originality shone in their articles, laugh- i ter rang through their columns, and each BROADCASTER was strongly held together with touches of seriousness. A well-equipped journalism room added much in the way of con- venience to the staff's work. We soon found that it would be no easy task. There were pictures to be taken, captions to be written, copy to compose, and lay- outs to be checked over and over and over again. There were co-operative discussions, friendly dis- agreements, and heated arguments. The editors were tyrants, the typists couldn't spell, the literary staff couldn't write, and it seemed to be staff policy that no one agree on anything, anytime. But out of this seemingly endless chaos we have somehow brought forth the 1960 Brevardier. We submit it for your approval. Once a month they meet to study newswriting and occasionally help the pres- ent staff with their issues of the BROADCASTER. Being a Junior Journalist is voluntary. All those in the club are members because they are inter- ested and willing to give study time to learn more about iournalism. This year's club is very talented. They function actually as a class, and not a club, for their purpose is not to serve, but to learn. A JUNIOR ANNUAL By working with the BREVARDIER seniors this year, the Junior Annual staff has gained some of the experience necessary to publish next year's annual. They have learned much about the staff's organization, the writing of copy, and the final publication of a successful 1961 BREVARDIER. Much appreciation is due this group for the hard work they have contributed. As a reward for this work they are permitted to give a picnic for the senior staff at the end of the year. tg!-evilfii scllil HE LJ - L'Vll-WY BCOSTER CLUB President: Sarah Lambert Vice-President: Judy Neal Secretary-Treasurer: Poo Camenzind Every athletic team needs the spirit of a Booster Club to lift it's morale when the going's rough and to cheer them on when the victory theirs. Each Valentine's Day it sponsors the Sweetheart Ball, one of the most popular dances given at Brevard High School. In the spring you can see the cheerleaders train- ing other girls to fill their shoes in hopes they may lead the football and basketball teams to victory in future years. Brevard High School, a perennial Blue Ridge Conference power, once again was represented by an outstanding group of players and coaches. As you remember, last year's team, the finest in the school's history, set a high standard for the i959 Blue Devils. With only one starter remaining from the '58 eleven, the team posted a very success- ful 7-3 record. Brevard opened the season by defeating Rey- nolds High 26-O. The Blue Devils met strong opposi- tion in their next two games and were defeated by Hendersonville and Canton, both losses being by Page Sixty-Eig ht one-point margins. After victories over North Bun- combe, Erwin, and Hendersonville, the squad lost to a powerful Waynesville team. Victories over Enka, Owen, and Bethel completed the season and earned for us a third-place conference standing. We were well represented not only by the team, but by sportsmanship and cooperation shown by the Brevard boosters. With seven graduating seniors and twenty-eight returning lettermen, prospects look even better for next year. 4 QW I, I Afgrfpfi' 3 Slfifff f A I I r, Coach Henry Smith Coach Buffalo Humphries Coach Landon Deal Deedie Wilson, Captain Charles Bradburn Jake Lowery, Captain DEYWY I-Gfvdrefh Cl'lGVl9S DUCliW0I'Tl'1, Cdpldirl John Mafheson Jimmy Winger Larry Janes J. Coming at the end of a rather disappointing season, the Blue Devils' resounding post-season successes raised interest in the sport to a level unknown prev- iously. The team was coached by Henry Smith dur- ing most of the season, but due to Coach Smith's departure in February, the last five regular season games and the tournament were played under Coach Ralph Buffalo Humphries. Sportsmanship and' team 'play were strong points in the team's favor, and the squad showed exceptional depth at all positions. Be- cause of this fact, there were no permanent starters, as the lineup was shuffled often, indi- cating that all twelve members of the squad were able to play well when called upon. Only one member of the squagd, Captain Art Dehon, will be lost by graduation, so the Blue Devils will field an experienced squad next season. J, QQ BLUE RIDGE CONFERENCE BASEBALL CHAMPIONS---1959 The 1959 season proved to be an exceptional one for the Brevard baseball team. The boys, led by Coach Humphries and Coach Smith, brought home the first Blue Ridge Conference Champion- ship in the history of the school. The team defeated long standing rivals, and only two non-conference losses held Brevard from an undefeated season. Some of the boys had ex- ceptionally good batting averages, among the high- est in the area. As a result of the Blue Ridge Conference finals, the team was selected to represent our conference at Hickory, North Carolina in the state semifinals. The team met very strong opposition, West Mecklen- burg, in its first game and was defeated. Beginning practice in the spring, the boys trained hard for their two scheduled contests. The team members were: Frank Vaughn, Larry Jones, Gus Tucker, Cecil Lowery, Art Dehon, Sammy Hileman, Tommy Mitchell, and Davis Raines. On the Western Carolina Meet held at Asheville School, team members placed in the IOO yard and 22 yard dashes and the sprint medley. This performance was certainly a creditable one, but the Blue Devils ended the track season by turning in an excep- tional performance at the Blue Ridge Conference Meet at Bethel High School. A first place in the mile relay, second and third places in the mile run, and third place in the 880 earned for the team a tie for third place in the Blue Ridge Conference standings. With practice for the T960 season beginning this spring, the team hopes to improve upon last season's record and work with one goal in mind-first place in the Blue Ridge Conference. llrevilrcii 5 Liam' lliglg School Faiisrary I Q ,.,. ,. ii .. , J ,Q V : ' iwrz-:2'f:1:S::' .-12:-ug' . , .as v :-- . -' TENNIS- 60 Tennis has been introduced as a team sport for the first time at Brevard High School, with plans being made for girls and boys teams, both to be coached by Don McLeod.
