Gwendolyn Picklesimer Malinda Bangs ........ We, the Almighty Seniors of Brevard High School, soon will look back on the happiest days of our lives. For four short years we have studied, worked, laughed, and played together. As freshmen we experienced the first confusion of high school life-new friends, new activities, new rules, and lockers. Then we were sophomores, back again with the great feeling of knowing our way around. Our mischievous antics tormented the fresh- men and teachers. The importance of studying, as well as having fun, became apparent during our jun- ior year. Our dramatic talent was discovered in one of the best plays in the history of B.H.S. Climax of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Page Eight . . . . . President . . . Vice-President . . . . . Secretary . . . . Treasurer Now we are seniors. Our rings are the prettiest ever seen at B.H.S. With many activities our senior year passed too swiftly. Money raising campaigns and parties have been fun. Our senior play was a successful production. Everyone enioyed the wonder- ful evening of our Junior-Senior. Highlighting the year was a trip to Washington, D. C. ln only a few weeks we will receive our diplomas, and one of the most important steps in our lives will have been taken as we go forward to face the future. We, the graduating class of l958, leave Brevard High School taking with us many happy memories of our days spent here. .X 5 . g If 'a 1 A, A .af cg w 3 f-. . if I , ir' yy,-vwllllwl I. We soon became familiar with the routine and struggled through English themes, math problems, and Latin coniugations. Two of our boys were on the Debating team and traveled to Boone. We had district and state winners in the 4-H demonstrations. The months passed quickly. As sophomores we enjoyed teasing the new freshmen as we had been teased. The first popularity king was elected from our class and several of our girls were chosen as cheerleaders. Two of our members attended the State Page Twenty-Six . . . . . . President . . . Summer vacation was soon over and we returned as upperclassmen, at last! Two of our junior boys were co-captains of the football team, the Junior play was presented, class rings were chosen, and the Junior-Senior was declared a big success. As the year draws to an end,we realize it has passed all too quickly. It is hardly believable that we who entered as freshmen in the fall of '55 will be great Seniors next year-then graduating in '59. hifi ,Q A . 14 ' L- ' I 4 V sri' UMA 'WF A 1? For a while our time was spent dodging the upperclassmen, but they soon settled down. Comments such as these were heard very frequent- ly. This lock has the wrong number. How can a person get lost in this building so easily? Quick, back down the hall, there comes a senior. What's a demerit? The mass confusion slowly evolved into order, and Page Thirty-Eight V . . . . . . President . . . . . . Vice-President . . . Secretary-Treasurer we met new friends, participated in new activities, learned to study, and enioyed ourselves. Also we learned to find our way around the new school without the help of the upperclassmen. Our freshman class is the largest class in the history of Brevard High School. There are many promising athletes and leaders. As our freshman year comes to an end, we look back on many pleasant memories. Wondering how we could have been so green and ignorant two semesters earlier, we are ready to face the responsi- bilities of being sophomores next year. A few minutes later Lowery passed to Rhodes for another tally. Winchester plunged for 2 yards and the third touchdown. Lowery raced 61 yards, Winchester 21, and Teague 75 for three more touch- downs. Phil Moody made the final score on a 7 yard run. BREVARD 35 REYNOLDS 7 Winchester scored touchdowns on runs of 4, 32, and 88 yards. Picklesimer scored from the 2 and on an 80 yard run. Heath kicked three conversions. BREVARD 20 HENDERSONVILLE 6 Sweet revenge was realized when the Blue Devils out-played and out- scored Hendersonville's Bearcats. Touchdowns were made by Jimmy Rhodes, Cecil Lowery and Charles Compton. Heath converted twice. BREVARD 7 CANTON 9 On the second play from scrimmage, Cecil Lowery got the ball on Brevard's three yard line and raced the length of the field for Bre- vard's only score. Canton scored a T7 yard field goal and a touchdown, but missed the extra point, making the final score 9-7. BREVARD 39 ASHEVILLE SCHOOL 6 Picklesimer contributed two touchdowns, and a 2-yard plunge by Cecil Lowery made the score 19-0. Tommy Waters recovered ca fumble on the visitors' 28 and ran into the end zone standing up. Moody scored on a 28-yard run and the final score came when Jake Lowery passed to Bill Shuford. Brevard High School is very proud of our excellent football team. Not only did the Blue Devils do some great football playing, but their good sportsmanship was compli- mented from many sources. The hard work of each player was rewarded when the team won nine games. Cecil Lowery, Larry Picklesimer, Charles Winchester, and Phil Moody led the Blue Devils' scoring. WUN NINE, H!-TNHED EIGHTH IN STATE BREVARD 26 CHRIST SCHOOL 0 The action started by Cecil Lowery's 3-yard plunge. A 24-yard end- around play and a 2-yard plunge kept the pace. After a dull third stanza, Hollifield put Brevard back in the scoring. Heath converted. BREVARD T3 HENDERSONVILLE 7 Larry Picklesimer scored on an option play. Winchester scored from the T7 on a pitchout from Picklesimer. The Bearcats made their only touchdown in the third period. Coach Humphries described it as a team victory. BREVARD 32 WAYNESVILLE T3 Cecil Lowery scored four of Brevard's five touchdowns, three of which were on long runs. Phillip Moody scored Brevard's final score from the 3-yard stripe. Waynesville scored in the third and fourth quarters. BREVARD 32 OWEN T4 A pass from Picklesimer to Rhodes that covered 78 yards put Brevard into the lead. Phil Moody scored two touchdowns, one from the T9 and the other from the 8. Lowery drove across from the 'IO and Winchester scored from the Owen 31 for the final score. BREVARD T9 ENKA 0 Brevard played its final game of the season in championship form. Charles Winchester scored from the 2. Phillip Moody literally bull- dozed his way on a 45-yard touchdown run. Picklesimer ran a beau- tiful bootleg for a 54-yard touchdown. Lowery converted once. Every Blue Devil was especially proud when our team was twice victorious over Hendersonville. Brevard placed eight men on the Blue Ridge Conference all-star team and was ranked eighth among the AA high schools in the state. Brevard lost the Blue Ridge Conference by one vote in the fifth ballot. Congratulations, Brevard Blue Devils, on one of the best football seasons in our high school's history. 4, -...f .11 EU!-XEHES DEVILS ls. v ik 'Ny KA., ffm These are the men who walk the sidelines impatiently during every game. Coaches Buff Humphries, McLeod, and Teague, wearing their black Stetsons, came through with a great team for the 57-58 season. They undoubtedly will do it again next year. JUNIIJH VARSITY TEAM The mischievous antics these two boys get away with would fill a book. Earning their letter, Steve and Flea get into a lot of deviltry during football season. HIS All that was heard from the future Blue Devils this past fall were their aches and pains. Why do we run so much? My leg hurts. l can't learn these plays. Valuable experience was gained in practicing teamwork and good sportsmanship. These will be essential next year when most of them will make the varsity squad. MAJ IJHETTE5 Our joy and delight -'fhe major- ettes under the leadership of co- chief maiorettes, Pam Galloway and Charlene York, practice equally as hard as the band for those fine field shows. Their hard training is in- deed symbolized in the expertness of those flashing oerials and pranc- ing steps. 3 was BAND Our band is a very vital part of the activities here at Brevard High, All summer we band members drill in the hot sun, teaching the new members which foot is their left and how to make formations in field shows for the approaching football season. This year we originated the newest style for hot sum- mer parades-Bermuda shorts. Didn't they look sharp-and feel comfortable! Nineteen of our band members attended the All State Band Clinic at Cullowhee and made an out- standing showing for the school. We rehearse three afternoons a week after school for exchange concerts with surrounding schools, the Band Contest in March, and the commencement ceremonies. Our numerous activities support the school spirit in every possible way. OFFICERS Captain .... ............... J immy Lyday Jr. Captain ......... .. Leonard Poteet Drum Maior ..... ..... ROBERT KIMZEY ADVISOR SARAH JANE .IUSTUS CO-EDITOR JOHN ALLISON CO-EDITOR STAFF We, of the BROADCASTER staff, hope that this past year we gave the student body and faculty alike some knowledge of the many newsworthy events that happened at Brevard High. All of us have en- ioyed working on the paper and have tried to record the events exactly as they happened. At the beginning of this year we won first place at Cullowhee, and naturally, we were a little nervous as we published the first issues of the paper. But from your remarks we gained confidence and really felt we had done a good iob and had an equally good chance to win again this year. Now as our last paper goes to press we feel senti- mental toward all the hard work and planning put in- to every issue, and most of all, we remember and ap- preciate the spirit in which you have accepted our paper. lt is you who have inspired us, and you alone who have made our paper what it is. So it is our hope that you feel we have done better than the best in our job as newspaper reporters. The editors and two staff members work at the Times Office as the paper is printed. So we began putting together an annual, which con- sisted of much hard work for the editors, originality for the literary staff, painstaking details for the art staff, supervision of pictures by the photography staff, and ability to acquire subscriptions for ads by the circulation and advertising staffs. We enioyed doing all of these things so that we might comprise an annual that would be enjoyed by Page Sixty-Six both the faculty and students of B.H.S. And as we write the final copy, we all have a feeling of happi- ness along with a certain amount of sadness. Yes, many things happened to us this year, such as losing the senior directory, freshman copy, and other things that have been misplaced. All of us, too, well remem- ber the deadlines that caused mad rushing and the long hours that were spent trying to think of copy that would tell of the activities that went on this past year, and we hope we have succeeded in giving you a treasury of memories for 1958.
