Coached by Albert Shuford and Chan Ashworth the Blue Devils had a line team. Members of the team were Lewis Compton, Paul lXlann, Robert llunter, llilton Reid, Pat llolden. Tommy Mitchell, Bill Brittain, Buck Thomas, lloward XfVolfe, David Smith, Charles Xllolfe, Dusty Erwin, A. hlonteith, Bobby Patton, Bobby Parris, james Sorrels, Charles Usborne, Vella Parker, Edward hlcCaha, Paul Lance, Roy Compton, lack Pressley, Bryan Pettit, Bill Barton, :Xllan Eberle, lames llolden, Wlilmer McGee, Bobby Ratchford, and D. Perkins. Managers were Bob Reid and Buddy llollar. The following is a brief summary of the games: ln the lirst game the Devils overcame a frghta ing Bryson City team l-l to 7. Barton and Reid scored for Brevard. Bill Barton was captain. ln the next game the powerful Morganton team defeated the Blue Devils 21 to 6. Brevard's touchdown was scored by Barton. Paul Lance was captain. The following game was played at Wfaynesville with Brevard losing to the Mountaineers 40 to 13. Reid passed to Pettit for the lirst tally. Barton buclced the line for the last score. Bryan Pettit was captain. The next game was a real thriller. The Blue Devils defeated Spruce Pine 7 to 6. Holden scored the touchdown and also kiclted the point. Roy Compton was captain. Next, Brevard defeated Asheville School for Boys for the Hrst time in ll years, 20 to 14. Reid passed to Holden for the first score. Holden bucked the line for the second, Reid ran 79 yards for the last tally. Allan Eberle was captain. The Blue Devils fought to a 6 to 6 finish with Christ School. Holden went through the line for Brevard's score. The Devils had many scoring chances during the game but could not push across another score. Paul Mann was captain. In the next game Brevard defeated their old rival, Hendersonville, 6 to 0. Roy Compton re- covered a fumble on Hendersonvilles ll yard line. Reid passed to Holden in the end zone for the score. A Hendersonville back ran a punt back 50 yards for a score but it was nullified because of clipping. James Holden was captain. The following week the Blue Devils played Bryson City a return game. The score was tied 6 to 6 when the Bryson City team walked off the field, forfeiting to Brevard l to 0. The Devils were on Bryson City's 5 yard line when the game ended. Buck Thomas was captain. ln the next game Canton defeated the fighting Blue Devils 26 to 0. Brevard was inside Canton's 10 yard line twice but couldnt score. Holden and Barton turned in nice runs for the Devils. A. Klonteith was captain. The final game of the season was played against Swannanoa, champions of Buncombe County. The Blue Devils won 20 to 0. Holden passed to Pettit who ran 40 yards to score. Reid broke loose off tackle and ran 30 yards for the second ralley. Shortly before the half Reid passed to Pettit to end the scoring for the game. Swannanoa never threatened. Pat Holden was captain. This game gave the Blue Devils a record of 6 wins, 3 losses and one tie. Bill Barton, hard driving fullback, was awarded the Lance trophy for being the outstanding player of the year. James Holden, halfbaclt, was selected to play in the Optimist Bowl in Ashe- ville.
