East Beam East Beam has a new resident direc- tor this year. Sam Rogers. Working with Sam are dorm president, Jay My- ers and vice president, Robert Brooks. Additional help is given by the resident assistants: Robert Brooks (first floor). Chuck Putnam (second floor), and Nick Embry (third floor). The directors, assistants, and residents have all par- ticipated in producing an enjoyable at- mosphere to study and relax in at East Beam. Nick Embry struts his stuff on Derby Day for East Beam. New Faces Remember that first day of college? There you were, a lowly freshman, standing in a mile-long line waiting for the school nurse to approve your health form so you could rush back to your new dorm room and unpack before the cafeteria closed for lunch. All those feelings were rushing through you, making your head spin: The excitement of being independent, the anxiety of starting all over again in a new environment, and the fun of learning new names or brand new faces are all a part of what going off to college and growing up is about. This year, freshmen were in for a change from the new administration, headed by Dean Witek. Wednesday, the first day of orientation, each incom- ing student was given a schedule for that day ' s events and the following five day ' s events until classes started. The agenda included orientation meetings, ice cream socials, dances, and . . . what was that ... ah, yes . . . the mandatory Camp Greenville all day Saturday in South Carolina complete with group games, lunch, dinner, and a square dance. Before Saturday, though, came the meetings. All the freshmen crowded into Dunham Auditorium, smiling shyly at one another and waiting patiently for the meetings to begin; they usually lasted forty-five minutes to an hour with topics like the point system and scheduling being discussed. Friday night, the campus exploded with excitement as word of the first dance got around. The transformation of the gym into a dance floor was made easily, and the people who showed up seemed to have a good time mingling and dancing. Aside from a few hitches, the week dedicated to us, the freshmen, was a success. Growing experiences, fun times, new friends, and new faces — that is what it was all about.
