m People don t go for walks any- more like they used to, ' ' says Charles Moore, remembering some of the best of his childhood times spent with his mother, two broth- ers, and sister as they walked along the banks of King ' s Creek. King ' s Creek originates near Mr. Moore ' s property by Wild Cat Gap, passes through the Brevard College cam- pus, and empties into the French Broad River. The creek was named after the King family who owned most of the area over 100 years ago. When Moore first arrived in 1916, many of the people were making their living growing crops such as corn and rye and by raising cattle. The cattle was driven in herds to Greenville, South Carolina, until about 1900 when the railroad reached Brevard. Other residents made their living from illegally op- erated stills. At one time, there was a legal, government-owned still lo- cated on Moore ' s property. King ' s Creek was once the site of four different mills. The first of these mills, built during the Civil War, was a grist mill built to grind corn. The second mill was a flour mill, and in the 1920s, one of the mills was restored and used as a carousel along with some other rides. King ' s Creek was originally the main source of drinking water for the Brevard community, though the community now obtains all of its drinking water from Cathey ' s Creek. The area near the beginning of the creek remains just as beautiful and unspoiled as the days when Mr. Moore used to go for walks with his family. As Mr. Moore states, I ' m not very progressive. In order to be progressive, you have to tear down everything that ' s beautiful. ' ' k Above: Standing on the porch of the oldest house in the area. Moore recalls the past. Right: King ' s Creek slowly begins to wid- en as it cuts through Moore ' s property. ■ . t - j ?a-» 2 Prologue

King ' s Creek is an integral part of the Brevard College community. Because it runs through the cam- pus, it is the site for numerous hap- penings and activities. At the begin- ning of the year, the annual Derby Day tug-of-war championship is held across the creek as the culmi- nation of the day ' s events. Many students lie by the creek to get a tan while either studying or just relax- ing from their studies. A tradition on campus is creeking ' ' students on their birthdays. If the creeking is done safely, it is usually a lot of fun. Sometimes coaches are creeked if a team has won a significant game, and other times people will be creeked on a whim. Above Right: The Student Union stays busy until late al niqht Above Far Right: McLarty-Goodson remains open during the evenings for students to study in. Right: A clear, brisk morning by Kings Creek.
