King ' s Creek originates near Mr. Moore ' s property by Wild Cat Gap, passes through the Brevard College cam- pus, and empties into the French Broad River. The creek was named after the King family who owned most of the area over 100 years ago. When Moore first arrived in 1916, many of the people were making their living growing crops such as corn and rye and by raising cattle. The cattle was driven in herds to Greenville, South Carolina, until about 1900 when the railroad reached Brevard. Other residents made their living from illegally op- erated stills. At one time, there was a legal, government-owned still lo- cated on Moore ' s property. King ' s Creek was once the site of four different mills. The first of these mills, built during the Civil War, was a grist mill built to grind corn. The second mill was a flour mill, and in the 1920s, one of the mills was restored and used as a carousel along with some other rides. King ' s Creek was originally the main source of drinking water for the Brevard community, though the community now obtains all of its drinking water from Cathey ' s Creek. The area near the beginning of the creek remains just as beautiful and unspoiled as the days when Mr. Moore used to go for walks with his family. As Mr. Moore states, I ' m not very progressive. In order to be progressive, you have to tear down everything that ' s beautiful. ' ' k Above: Standing on the porch of the oldest house in the area. Moore recalls the past. Right: King ' s Creek slowly begins to wid- en as it cuts through Moore ' s property. โ–  . t - j ?a-ย 2 Prologue King ' s Creek is an integral part of the Brevard College community. Because it runs through the cam- pus, it is the site for numerous hap- penings and activities. At the begin- ning of the year, the annual Derby Day tug-of-war championship is held across the creek as the culmi- nation of the day ' s events. Many students lie by the creek to get a tan while either studying or just relax- ing from their studies. A tradition on campus is creeking ' ' students on their birthdays. If the creeking is done safely, it is usually a lot of fun. Sometimes coaches are creeked if a team has won a significant game, and other times people will be creeked on a whim. ErZfi m m FIRST WEEK AT BREVARD The first week at Brevard College proved to be filled with memorable experiences for freshmen and sophomores alike. The wide-eyed freshmen set out to conquer the new, intriguing land of Brevard while the older, more experienced sophomores proudly displayed their I ' m-at-home attitudes. The freshmen attended the orientation sessions and had their heads filled to over- load with facts and figures about college life. Although college living was awkward at first, the freshmen soon adapted to their new homes. All of the new rules and regu- lations became secondary to the thrill of making new friends. The sophomores quickly became reac- quinted with their old lifestyles and their old friends. They were welcomed back to Brevard with new faces and a few new rules, but the sophomores adjusted well to the newly-lengthened visitation hours! The compe- tition started with the official derby toss. The Battle of the Dorms โ€” competition between individual dorms (and between dorm teams and faculty teams for some events this year) โ€” included volleyball, a three-legged race, an egg toss, mu- sical washtubs, izzy dizzy, and the tug-of-war. The tug-of-war champi- onship occurred at the creek! This year ' s Derby Day winners were new Complex and Green (tied) and West Jones. The day offered a chance to meet new people and have fun with old friends before the school year really got underway. Todays fash- ions are free-style: anything goes. Oversized, baggy clothes are in, along with the Surfer look. Most of BC ' s fashion depends on the clothes available, no matter what the color. The Polo shirt is still in, but some fashion makers button all buttons to the very top. Jeans with holes and torn shirts provide the lived-in look. Boxer shorts appear outside the long pants. And since the old looks never die, paisley is back. Anything tie- dyed matches anything that isn ' t. Short hair is definitely com- ing back for men and women. Mohawks, Fades, and shaved heads with designs on the side are common sights. Gold is still the popular jewelry, even though Swatch watches are still hang- ing around. Guys and Girls have pierced ears โ€” now even double pierced! Reeboks are the ' In sneak, with or without socks. And high tops aren ' t just for basketball anymore. The ever-loving jeans jacket is still popular with everyone. To sum it up, fashion is whatever is easiest to put on at 7:00 in the morning! The Resident Directors, Julie Johnson and Diane Hoffman, are mak- ing a great effort to unify Jones so that the students will no longer think of themselves as East Jones or West Jones. Additionally, Diane is organizing a club unique to Jones which will deal with special projects such as holiday decorations and Halloween and Christmas par- ties, just to name a few. Jones ' Resident Assistants and representatives in SQA are very active and try to interact with the students i n Jones. There have been many im- provements and additions to Jones this year (Diane Hoffman and the freshmen, to name a couple), but there are some good things that have been retained from last year โ€” like Julie Johnson, who is now also Assistant Director of Housing โ€” and let ' s not forget the sophomores! All in all, Jones is a fine place to live โ€” as its residents will readily attest. โ€” Bari Siegall 18 Jones , Jones 19 โ–  TAYLOM Over the years Taylor has had the reputation of being the mischievious dorm, and this year is no different. When Taylor residents go on vacation they might come home to find a redecorated room with everything such as the bed, dresser, drawers in the dresser, and chairs turned upside down, along with their clothes and other loose belongings thrown all over the place. It would also appear that no one sleeps during the weekends or during the week, for that matter. You may ask yourself what could they possibly be doing? They are probably barricading the RD ' s door with every piece of furniture in the lobby so that he wakes up to quite a surprise, or maybe play- ing frisbee to all hours of the night. Still others like bowling in the hallways or throwing four and a half pounds of grapes in a grape war. Then you have the more orthodox form of competition between the dorm members with a football game out in front. All in all, Taylor residents seem to have no trouble amusing themselves. Above Right: Mike Schaefcr is headed towards the creek in a familiar pose as he is carried by Dan Schneider, Gray Young, and Jason Miele. Taylor 21 IMlft I HH mh i 22 hew Complex NEW CยฉMPLi What is the name of the dorm with lots of rowdy sportsmen and four separate apartments? The COMPLEX! The Flex , which is usually inhabited by athletes, is situated near the gym and the track: where else would these people live? The guys at the Complex may have some rivalry between the different teams living there, but they still get along pretty well. The apartments have many different styles: the basketball team members have pic- tures of Dr. J. and Michael Jordan while the run- ners have posters of marathons on the walls. Visi- tation in the complex is till 11:00 pm, so there is always something going on until it is time to leave! Above: Tadd Connor gets frisky with J.B. while Mark Bean says, ' I don t believe they re doing this. Below. Lee Lawhome needs Tadd Connor s help in understanding his homework. Below right: Rodney Deyton studies intensely for an upcoming test. jam V m r Endless quarrels over shower time, blaring ster- oes with anything from Dougie Fresh to The Ro- mantics, posters of dream guys and sexy girls, and socializing from at least noon to eight p.m. are all characteristics of East and West Beam Dorms. East and West Beam are like one big family for most students because of the way the dorm is situated. The Beamers love being close to each other with just a lobby, instead of a campus, sepa- rating them. Beam is a dorm with a lot of activity, and there is always someone being a little too rowdy. All in all, Beam is a nice and convenient place to live, ho wonder there is a long waiting list for this dorm. , Above: Emma Kauffman and Chris Quddie prepare for DYNASTY NIGHT! With its new look for the school year, Green has become a better place to live. Renovations abound throughout the dorm, the most obvious being new tile floors, new doors, and an eye-catching brick patio out front. David Taylor, the RD for the second year in a row, has played a major role in keeping Green ' s good reputation. A caring RD allows for friendlier living conditions, and the attitude of the students shows this to be true. Where else could you find such a variety of guys so closely knit? Green has basket- ball players, soccer players, even runners living in total friendship. Maybe this is the reason for Green ' s dominance in intramural sports: one can find a Green team in almost every championship. With wins in both volleyball and football the fall semester, Green will be remembered as a dorm that strived for the best. te m โ–  โ€ข 1 L- 7 p W fl l 1 Above: Mike Teague studies in the comfort of his own room and bed. THEY WORK HARD One program that Brevard Col- lege offers to those students enti- tled to receive financial aid is work study. Students may gain some ex- perience and make some money by working at various jobs around campus such as in the library, in the Student Union, in the adminis- tration building, in the cafeteria, and for individual professors. The jobs are not as grueling as some students may fear since these tasks require only a few hours each week; and some, such as lifeguard- ing, can even be relaxing. For all of their hard work, these students gain extra money and the chance to get to know some of the faculty and staff a little better. FOR THE MONEY Right. Sandy Rogers works (quite willingly, despite what the sign says) for Doc Wood. 30 Work Study Student Tutors Student tutors are individuals on a full or partial academic scholarship who, in re- turn for their scholarship, allot two to five hours a week to helping other students. Most of the tutors work in the tutoring lab Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 11:00 pm; some have designated hours in the dorms to do individualized tutoring. Diane Hoffman sponsors the tutoring pro- gram, which has five main objectives: to assist students who are experiencing aca- demic difficulty; to assist students who choose themselves to seek extra academic help; to assist students in identifying prob- lems with study skills, time-management, and goal-setting; to refer students who are experiencing difficulty with various aspects of college life to the appropriate sources for assistance; and to serve as good role models for other students. Some students went off campus trick-or- treating Thursday night and came back with sacks of goodies. Some costumes on that night were a pair of dice rolling around the campus, a Martian, a devil, and a tiger that had gotten lost on its way to Clemson. On the real All-Hallow ' s Eve, the students took part in a costume contest and dance. The winning costumes includ- ed Tom Johnson as a skeleton, Ivy McManus as a vampire, and Brian Cartland as a piece of chewing gum. PARENTS ' WEEKEND During the weekend of November 2-4, many parents of B.C. students got to experience some of what life at Brevard College is all about. There were several activities to inform and entertain the parents during their visit. The soccer teams had a good weekend with the men ' s team taking first place in Region X that Saturday. There was also a student talent show, a craft show, and a taste of Broadway with the drama department ' s production of Cabaret. The music department also got involved with performances by the Jazz Ensemble and the Concert Band in the cafeteria during meals along with a performance by the Collegiate Singers during the special worship service in Dunham on Sunday. In addition, sev- eral parents took the opportunity to meet the faculty teaching their sons and daughters. It was a busy and fun-filled weekend for parents and students alike. Fall Life And Culture The Life and Culture schedule for Fall 1986 started off with Fall Convocation featuring Dr. Bernard Fitzgerald as the guest speaker, next, internationally acclaimed guitarist David Richter presented an evening of classical guitar music. Photographer Galen Rowell filled the auditori- um at his slide show and lecture on his adven- tures in Tibet, Mepal, and other exotic locations. This year ' s Purgason Lecturer was the Rev. R.F. Smith, Jr., who discussed marriage and family. The drama department scored a hit with its fall production Cabaret. Presenting an evening of Appalachian music and stories was Roadside Theater ' s Brother Jack. Other contributions to the Tall schedule were made by ARA Services ' special dinners for dorm residents, Intramural sports, the Alumni Phonathan, and various dances with DJ ' s provided by SQA. The series continued with scheduled musical performances by the Tower Brass Quintet, the Collegiate Singers, the Jazz Band, the Brevard Chamber Orchestra, and the Concert Band. Flans for a controversial program called Hitlerism and the Ho- locaust were underway as well as plans for an emi- nent Christian scholar to speak at the Staley Lec- tures. Below: Mr. Jackson s English 101 class smiles innocently before bombarding him with snowballs. Although they lacked proper funding, Student Government tried to make the most of the spring semester. They planned skiing trips to Sapphire Valley, Springfest, Spring Formal, and the Val- entine ' s Dance in addition to the coffee- houses, movies and dances. Other spring activities included Admissions and Alumni Phonathon, College Bowl planned by PTK, Christian Encounters Week, and the Staley Lectures. Also, Sophomores were pleased to find out that graduation would take place on May third, one week earlier than last year. During his short time in office, Brevard College has seen much progress. Students are able to talk freely with Presi- dent Qreer and ask any questions that they want an- swered, but this is not a one sided relationship. As Dr. Qreer says, We are talking these days about a new Bre- vard College. We mean it. We are expecting more from our students than ever before. The buildings on campus are starting to get a new look along with everything else. An estimated amount of $250,000 has been spent to renovate Green and Taylor Dormitories, and plans are in the pro- cess for a new housing facility and renovation of the art building. Also, the main gym has been refurbished and the classroom buildings are being repainted. Keep up the good work President Qreer! Dean Langley has a strong background in areas such as advising and student retention. He is placing emphasis on academic standards, the student tutor program, learning contracts, and implement- ing an early warning system. The early warn- ing system is a way that the faculty and ad- ministration can see how well the students are doing academically. Brevard ' s Dean of Admissions, Dana Paul, is working on increasing enrollment and try- ing to improve student retention. Our Dean of Student Affairs, Don Scarbor- ough, has been reorganizing the Student Af- fairs Office to make it more efficient an d effec- tive in meeting the needs of the students. He is also working on improving aspects of stu- dent life such as Orientation. ABOVE: Dean Scarborough answers ques- tions which are posed to him by parents on Opening Day. According to the advisor, this year the Clarion was redesigned to be in keeping with more current trends in American newspaper graphics, and the new name- plate, (designed by Jock Lauterer and Bilt- more Press) is in keeping with the new graphic identity of Brevard. ' ' The Clarion staff this year, led by editor Bonnie Davis, worked to make the paper more pleasing visually and more lively. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The Student Goverment Association consists of the presidents, vice-presidents, and freshmen representatives from each dorm as well as from the day students and any one else who is interested in joining. SQA ' s leadership is provided by the Presi- dent of the student body, a Judicial Board Vice-President and a Social Board Vice- Pres ident, all of whom were elected in the spring of the previous year. However, this year the offices are a little different since there are two Social Board Vice-Presidents due to a tie in the elections. This organiza- tion is responsible for representing the stu- dent body in communications with the ad- ministration and for providing input and direction concerning student life and activi- ties at Brevard. These events include movies in the Student Union, games like the Roommate Game, and dances. The Judicial Board ' s responsibilities for 1986-87 have been to- tally changed. Dean Scarborough now makes most of the decisions concerning appeals in Guideline violations. Judicial Board handles all traffic appeals, but they are presented with a Uniform Guideline vio- lation appeal only when Dean Scarbor- ough cannot decide how the case should be handled. The players improved each game to play the best they know how. Their motto, So Intense that It Has to Happen, held up throughout the season. Coach Scarborough said, This is one of the top two or three teams which 1 have coached at Brevard College, and I think the game against Anderson (for the Region X Championship) is the most exciting one of my twenty-year โ€ข career. Many things were ac- complished during this long season, including Coach Scar- borough ' s 100th win at Home- coming. Also, the win against season-long rival Anderson College was long overdue and placed Brevard first in the NJCAA Region X Tournament. In Brevard College records, the team placed second in Most Goals Scored in One Season and third in Fewest Goals Scored Against. David Chun, Tommy Misuraca, and Yong Song made first team All-Region while Joseph Brooks made second team. David Chun summed up the season by saying, It was a great season because no one gave up and everybody showed lots of improvement. LOOK MA, NO HANDS The 1986-1987 women ' s soccer team was made up of twelve freshmen and two sophomores. Although this year was a rebuilding one, the team showed great improve- ment during each game. Every player gained valuable experi- ence that will help her in the future. Coach Johnson said, This year we had the tough- est schedule we will probably ever have. The women played nineteen games, and five of the teams were nation- ally ranked. By playing strong teams, each Brevard player learned how to be a support-j ive teammate. A total of 328| shots were taken, and 287 saves were made. Each playe showed dedication and spirit in every game. The team cap- tains, Amy Cearley and Carol Ellison, kept the team pumped up at all times. One| player who went above and beyond the call of duty was Paige Jackson. At the end of I her season, she was the lead ing scorer for junior colleges in the nation with thirty-seven goals in nineteen games. h โ– jj : ยซยซfe .-m โ–  Left. On the one hand, this year ' s men ' s cross-country season held some disappointment in that the team relinquished its four-year hold on the national Cham- pionship. On the other hand, they still had quite an amazing season when one considers that even in an off ' year, they came in second nationally. Brevard ' s top runner, John Christiansen, finished fourth overall for Ail-American honors. Paul Carpenter, Brevard ' s number two runner, braved a leg wound that later required ten stitches in order to finish the race and make Ail-American. Chris Dunn, who finished second for Brevard and 10th overall, also made All-Ameri- can. Furthermore, this team ' s accomplishments (along with the wom en ' s) won Brevard College its second consecutive Hike Cup for best men ' s and women ' s programs combined. Returning sophomores Kim nelson, Terrie Jackson, and Heather Chamber- lain along with freshmen new- comers Michelle Lambert, April Piercy, Heather Barclay, and Ei- leen Spaulding took the team to a second place national finish. Furthermore, at nationals four runners made Ail-American: Heather Chamberlain, who came in 20th; Terrie Jackson, who came in 15th; Michelle Lam- bert, who came in 20th; and Kim nelson, who fought exhaustion to finish 23rd and secure Bre- vard ' s second place standing. This performance also led to Brevard ' s second capture of the nike Cup, the award for the best combined national finish for men and women from the same school. MEN ' S BASKETBALL The men ' s basketball team was put through many changes, chal- lenges and problems this year. With the team consisting of equal numbers of freshmen and sopho- mores, a lot of adjusting to each other ' s playing was needed. The season was a difficult one not only because of new, strong opponents, but also because the men played 16 of their 24 games on the roads. The men had very strong games against north Greenville and an ex- citing overtime victory of 79-77 against Spartanburg Methodist. The men ended the year with a 10- 15 overall record with strong per- formances made by Tony Plem- mons, Kevin Harper, Kevin Allman, and Maurice Little. Tony Flemmons was named to both the All-WCJCC First team and the All-Region X team. The team also had outstand- ing victories over the UNC-JV team both at home and at the Smith Cen- ter in Chapel Hill. Top. Coach Doug Rogers has a talk with his team. Far Left. Men s Basketball 151 r 1 WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL The women ' s basketball team had a tough building season this year, partly because of having only one returning player, Margaret Hinkson. Despite this fact, by the end of the season the ladies were playing very well together with good teamwork in evidence. The women ended the year with a re- cord of 2-6 in the WCJCC, placing them fourth in the conference, and and overall record of 6-22. Out- standing performances were made by Captain Margaret Hinkson, who was named MVP, and by Teressa James, who not only scored 31 points against north Greenville, but was named to the second WCJCC team. The women maintained their enthusiasm and discipline throughout the season, and next season looks like it will be a strong one. Top: Ruth Earle keeps the ball away from a Roane State guard. Coach Rinker said, Our people are really ready to do some racing. ' ' Dean Duncan, Brian Westrater and nick Embry led the middle distance runners at that point. Sophomore Dean Duncan qualified in the 800 and 1500 for the national indoor track and field championships. Allen Brooks and John Hoback were the top 400 meter men on the team and ran the 300 and 500. The men ' s and women ' s tennis teams were just getting their spring season underway as the year- book went to press. The men ' s team, coached by Bill Alexander, was undergoing a building season as only a few of the team ' s members returned from the Fall semester. Jim Knapp moved from second to first place when Dee Maulton did not return, and Olivier de la Ronciere took over second place. The rest of the placings were as yet undecided. The team had 17 matches and one tournament planned for the Spring. The women ' s team began practicing early in the spring under the guidance of Coach Julie Johnson, while Coach Jane Long was still busy with women ' s basketball. Johnson thought the team would do fairly well this season as long as they didn ' t have many unlucky breaks. Their first match was scheduled for March 17 against Tusculum. The new president, Corazon AQUINO, was faced with political and economic turmoil. 196 Epilogue Above left: The president signed into law in October the broadest TAX OVERHAUL in a gen- eration. Rep. Left: President Ronald Reagan and Sovi- et leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Reykjavik, ICELAND, for a two-day SUMMIT in October to discuss arms control. The two leaders reached an impasse on testing of the U.S. Star Wars weaponry. Epilogue 197 Like King ' s Creek! Brevard col- lege students are briefly passing through Brevard on their way to broader horizons. After leaving Bre- vard, many students go on to high- ly respected four-year universities. Upon graduation from college, stu- dents are forced to succeed in the real world. Because the student body at Brevard College is fairly small, students have greater op- portunities. They are able to work closely with their instructors, and are able to take on more responsi- bilities in extracurricular activities. Most students would not normally have that opportunity at a four-year college or university. Although the time in which a student passes through Brevard is relatively short, the knowledge and experience that one gains at Brevard will last a life- time. ยซ 3 M t 2y The Pertelote wishes to acknowledge the lowing: Cover Art: Catherine Shearin, t ' hoto Contributors: Jock LautCrer, Scott Stonefield, David Robinson, Sydney Best, Susan Hall, Su san Hasslf.
