PERTELOTE 1982 BREVARD COLLEGE Brevard, NC Volume 48 Introduction 1 When we arrived at Brevard this year, each of us began a new life. Whether we were sophomores or freshmen we faced a lot of new experiences. Sophomores saw the appearance of a new point and fine system, resident tutors and teachers. There was a new group of leaders, the Resident Assistants (the student down the hall who kept telling you to turn your stereo down). Sophomores experienced a new feeling of importance and leadership. They grew in responsibility and maturity. Freshmen moved into their dorms with apprehension and slight cases of homesickness that soon gave way to a feeling of belonging. 2 Introduction The eighty-nine Day Students became a bigger part of campus life more so than in years before. All the students united on Derby Day to fight for the honor of their respective dorms and to meet new people. Many lasting friendships developed the first few weeks of school, and life became easier for everyone. Introduction 3 4 Introduction Introduction 5 If you just happened to be up at one thirty or two in the morning some night, you probably saw a couple of lights around the finally silent dorms. Inside there was, inevitably, some poor, sleepy soul memorizing chemistry equations or doggedly writing a term paper due at eight o ' clock the next morning. It was here at Brevard that we began to learn to accept responsibility and the importance of staying one step ahead of the next class assignment. 6 Introduction . The Social Board provided many things for us to do with our friends. Every Thursday night we could all meet in the Student Union and be entertained by Keir Irmiter, Greg Greenway, or other talented people including fellow students. At least one night every weekend we could enjoy a Greek night dance, Casino night, Toga party, or even a Halloween party. Three nights a week students could view such current films as Every Which Way But Loose, Capricorn One, and The Song Remains the Same. The gathering places for friends were many; we met on the wall, at the Storm Cellar, at Pizza Hut; and we discovered a new place to go in Brevard, Le Chat Allee. Introduction 7 8 Introduction Introduction 9 Brevard provided many extracurricular activities for students looking for something other than study. The East Beam women got together twice a week to dance themselves into shape while others hiked to such places as Looking Glass Rock and Chimney Rock for exercise and enjoyment. 10 Introduction The Life and Culture Series this year provided a great many different forms of entertainment. One of the highlights of the series was Preston, The Magician. Students are not likely to forget Preston ' s amazing power over their friends through hypnosis. Another treat was the presentation of Once Upon A Mattress ' ' in the newly renovated Dunham Auditorium. Even Brevard ' s own faculty was represented when Artist-in-Residence, Anthony Sirianni, impressed everyone with his excellent performance. Many groups on campus attracted students. In clubs or teams students became acquainted with others who had the same interests. We could join clubs reflecting our religious beliefs such as Kappa Chi, the Methodist Student Movement, and the Canterbury Club. We could also join academic or athletic clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa, the Swim Club or the Rugby Club. The Spanish Club and Circle K were among the cultural and service organizations on campus. Several new clubs were formed to widen the selection for students. These included a Young Republicans group, a campus firefighters group and students who gathered to play dungeons and dragons ' ' on Sunday nights. Introduction 1 1 12 Introduction I i Fll lfE,w «ju l Iv — - •■Lf Introduction 13 Students served on various committees and publication staffs while others chose to participate in inter-collegiate athletics, music and drama. Athletic students provided excitement for fans of soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, track, tennis and women ' s Softball. Numerous students participated in intramurals. Music students took part in both concert and stage bands and in various vocal ensembles. Drama students were members of both drama classes and casts of campus-wide play productions. Reasons for choosing Brevard were many, often including the beauty of the western North Carolina mountains. Students came from twenty-four states and nine foreign countries. They came from Florida, New York, Wisconsin, Georgia, and our own North and South Carolina. 14 Introduction An exchange of cultures took place among those students from the U.S. and the large number of people from other lands attending Brevard. We made friends with people from Greece, Holland, Japan, Venezuela and several other countries. Each of the students from every state and every country added a little piece of himself to the Brevard community. The outside world appeared huge and menacing, but we felt safe in our own world surrounded by the fifty-year-old stone wall. With the assassinations and attempted assassinations of world leaders, a shuttle traveling to space and back, and other amazing happenings surrounding us, we still discovered our own small place in the universe here at Brevard. Introduction 15 Voyager Eager for the darkness, You stretch the sac of Earth And rip her atmosphere. The chaos of moving boxes, beds, and stereos lasted for hours, followed by time for becoming reacquainted with old friends and meeting new ones. R.A. ' s. Mentors, and Big Sisters helped freshmen adjust to a new way of life. On August 26. everyone registered for classes. Amid throngs of students and faculty members, individuals spent confusing hours arranging class schedules to get just the right section of English Even with all the hassle of moving in and registration, we survived to begin an exiting year at Brevard. This first weekend of the month proved to be a big success. Friday night. November 6th, the basketball team demonstrated that they were ready for action when they surged on to a victory over Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. The same evening, the Drama Department presented Once Upon A Mattress ' ' in the completely remodeled Dunham Auditorium. Under the direction of Mr. Sam Cope, the production premiered on Thursday night followed by performances on Friday and Saturday nights. Both students and their parents had the opportunity to enjoy the production. Saturday morning, parents were welcomed to meet President Martinson and Dean Wray and talk with the faculty and administrators while enjoying a Continental breakfast served in the cafeteria. During the lunch hour, the Brevard College Concert Band presented a variety of selections at a concert on the lawn. In the afternoon, the soccer and cross country teams enhanced the exitement of the weekend. The harriers ran their course well just before the soccer team defeated Spartanburg Methodist College in overtime. The women ' s basketball team also scrimmaged and won four of the four quarters played against Mars Hill College ' s varsity team. Many parents and students enjoyed the Big Band Concert presented by the Jazz Band on Saturday night. Dr. John Upchurch, band director, spotlighted many student performers while other students and their parents foxtrotted, waltzed, and even shagged. Students and parents ended this memorable reunion by attending the Sunday morning worship in the gym. Overall, the weekend was a complete success. The Drama Department ' s magnificent production, Once Upon A Mattress, was the opening production in the totally renovated Dunham Auditorium. With the stage fully lighted and arrayed in brightly colored props, the audience, as well as the cast, knew that the play could be nothing but a success. Mr. Sam Cope, Professor of Music and Theater Arts and Director of Brevard College ' s super theatrical productions, was pleased with the overall performance of this year ' s successful accomplishments. The hilarious musical was based on the fairy tale, The Princess and The Pea. Talented thesbians and musicians worked long hours with lighting and sound technicians and stage crews to impress their audience. The highlight of the play was the grand finale which featured the entire cast, the orchestra, and a fifteen-foot bed of mattresses. A new feature of the Series this year was the Wednesday morning presentations, which many students found very convenient. The Brevard Chamber Orchestra opened the year with a fine performance. Dr. Martinson officially began the school year with an inspiring, challenging personal word to the student body. Dr. John Mcketta, advisor on energy matters to President Reagan, spoke on the Future of Mankind. In his speech, he predicted the effects of rapid developments on man. In October, Preston, the Miracle-ist returned to an enthusiastic crowd of almost 2,000 people. His act consisted of magic wands, disappearing milk, and white rabbits, but the real show-stopper of the evening was shown through his amazing hypnotic skills. This hypnosis brought cheers and laughter from the crowd and total submission from the participants as they were told to sing, hula, and give a hilarious alphabet speech. Other events included concerts by the Collegiate Singers, Oratorio Chorus, Chamber Choir, the Concert Band, and the Stage Band. The Life and Culture Series climaxed the first semester with a Christmas Concert and the annual lighting of the Christmas tree with President Martinson giving a thoughtful devotion. Every student and teacher attending will find it hard to forget such favorites as Keir Irmiter. Crow Johnson, and Greg Greenway. Keir Irmiter impressed everyone with his rendition of the Beatles, Jackson Browne, and Billy Joel songs. Crow Johnson, who held a songwriting seminar, overcame the audience with her own inspiring songs. Greg Greenway entertained students and alumni alike during the Homecoming weekend. This year also brought several weeks of student entertainment in which talented students played and sang their favorite melodies or their own compositions. The informal, relaxed atmosphere of the Coffeehouses added to the audience ' s enjoyment. 38 Coffeehouses Above Left Pete Neff performed during a March Coffeehouse Left The main attraction at this year s coffeehouses was Greg Greenway and his band, who played tor students lour times. Led by outstanding captain. Judy McCrary, and assisted by co-captains, Sarah Cooper and Chris Thompson, the twenty member squad developed their repertoire to entail difficult pyramids, numerous partner stunts, and precision squad cheers. Two-hour practice sessions four times a week, cheering at three to four games a week, making posters and banners for the campus, and special projects including representing the college in the town Christmas parade are only a few of the activities the cheerleaders participated in. There are hopes that, through this, man may one day live In space. Many happenings around the world directly affected our lives. Religious people everywhere felt their rights being infringed upon with the assassination attempt made upon Pope John Paul II. Fear for freedom rippled across the world as major leader, Anwar Sadat died at the hands of an assassin. Pride in our own country and thankfulness for our liberty tugged at us with the deaths of the ten IRA hunger-strikers, the kidnapping of Brigadier General James Dozier by the Red Brigade, and the institution of martial law in Poland. One bright spot shown round the world was the fairy-tale wedding of Prince Charles of England and his princess. Lady Diana Spencer. In ourown country hundreds lost their jobs as a result of the Air Traffic Controller Strike. Gas prices lowered a little bit, but other prices soared along with interest rates. The country experienced one of its coldest winters in many years. The South and Brevard College students re- velled in the outstanding performances of nearby Clemson University in foot- ball and the University of North Caro- lina in basketball. President Rea- gan ' s budget cuts began to affect Brevard students through fi- nancial aid. Through all of this outside chaos the students at Brevard learned, shared, grew, and ultimatelyjoined together within the College Community as one. L.L.F.
