PERTELOTE 1981 BREVARD COLLEGE Brevard, N.C. 28712 Volume 47 Life at Brevard College offered us challenges, new experiences, and lasting relationships. As we entered a more independent lifestyle, we began a new adventure. With the help of Mentors and Big Sisters, freshmen settled into the community. Sophomores returned as leaders, guiding others. We found new roommates, friends, and resident tutors waiting for us. We adjusted to the changes and everything seemed to fall into place. College living became a habit. 2 Introduction Intramurals and Derby Day united us with our dorms. We all showed superb teamwork as we pulled together to make our dorms number one. Resident tutors provided us with supervision and friendship. These individuals worked together for our safety and protection and to unite us as one in the Brevard College Community. Introduction 3 4 Introduction Introduction 5 To many of us, classes and grades played an important role in our life at Brevard. We attended classes from very early in the morning until sometimes late in the evening. We chose courses in a variety of subjects from math, English, band, history, and running, to theatre, sight singing, an, religion, bowling and botany. If we needed special help in our classes, tutors were provided. We were rewarded if we excelled. Schedules and schedule changes dominated a large part of our first few weeks. Our schedules were rearranged to meet our needs. 6 Introduction Whether it was in the familiar quiet of the library, in our dorm lobbies, or in our rooms, studying became second nature. We put hours into chemistry equations, English papers, algebra problems, midterms and final exams. Our efforts paid off. Introduction 7 8 Introduction Introduction 9 Our life was not entirely work and no play. We had many exciting activities to keep us busy. We had fun and met new people at the Friday night discos and square dances sponsored by the Social Board. The Student Union and Storm Cellar brought many of us together for a game of pool or pinball, a friendly dinner, studying, or entertainment at a coffeehouse. To many of us, the most important room in the Student Union was the mail room. Each day we waited in anticipation of the mail. 10 Introduction Fall and spring breaks were welcome vacations from classes and college life. They helped to clear our boggled minds. BC athletics provided us with excitement and frustration throughout the year. We won some and we lost some, but through it all we were united with fantastic Tornado spirit. The Life and Culture Series enhanced our growth in the arts through drama, dance, music, and public speaking. All of us who attended were enriched. Our student body was governed by the Judicial Board. This group of dedicated students worked to provide for the concerns and needs of all of us. Introduction 11 12 Introduction Introduction 13 Throughout the year, many changes came about. Within these changes we grew. We are no longer the people we once were. We have developed from unsure adolescents into mature adults. Many of us voted for the first time. We traveled, studied, made friends, shared joys, triumphs, and letdowns with one another. All of us began new relationships and made our own decisions. We will always remember our friends, teachers, cafeteria food, the rain, Tornado spirit, Homecoming, and our wonderful year at Brevard College. Our year - 1980 I 81 was unforgettable and will always be a part of us. 14 Introduction Introduction 15 16 Introduction TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION 18 CLASSES 42 ACTIVITIES 94 ADVERTISEMENTS 172 Introduction 17 18 Administration ADMINISTRATION Administration 19 EXEMPLARY COLLEGE PRESIDENT The goal of President Jacob C. Martinson is seeing this small, 750 student college become a symbol of excellence. He hopes that Brevard will soon become the best two-year liberal arts college in the country. President Martinson believes a college should assume responsibility for its students in order to help each individual achieve his greatest potential. To do this, a student must find Mis identity through first finding himself. With the help of the college, man and God, Dr. Martinson feels this can be achieved. Left: President Martinson enjoys a relaxing afternoon bicycling Bottom Left: President Martinson, faculty, and BC students attend the annual Christmas tree lighting on campus Bottom Right: President Martinson greets newcomer Scott Corbett and newly appointed Dean Don Scarborough. 20 Administration INVOLVED, CONCERNED ADMINISTRATOR Dr. Morris Wray is not only Dean of the College and a professor, but also a trusting friend of many students. Daily Interaction with students is both his job and a delight of the Dean ' s. Each new year he strives to reach perfection in the campus community through the cooperation of administration, faculty and students. Dean Wray feels that Perfection is not a campus without problems, but a campus where we deal with problems in a creative and productive fashion. If we are to achieve greatness, we must learn to care about learning, and we must learn to care for each other.  !• Top Left: Dean Wray devotes lime to paperwork, as one of his vanous responsibilities Top Right: You will find Dean Wray spending a lot of time at student activities such as Derby Day. Left: A great supporter of the college s athletics. Dean Wray backs up the soccer team Above: Because of his sincere concern for the students. Dean Wray enjoys just being a friend. Administration 21 POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE CARING Robert McLendon is known to many people as the Dean of Admissions. This is his title; however, others know him as a dedicated friend and co-worker. The constant increase in enrollment of this college, at a time when it should be decreasing with the trend, is primarily due to Dean McLendon. Dean McLendon attributes this to his hard working, dedicated and professional admissions office staff. Don Scarborough, the newly established Dean of Student Affairs, is concerned about dealing with students through fairness and consistency. As student housing director, he feels that the residence halls need to provide not only a place to live comfortably, but a good learning atmosphere as well. Effectively dealing with the students is a special gift for Dean Scarborough, because caring is the easiest part of his job. 22 Administration Top Right: Come G. Burdette. R.N. However, Jones, East Beam, West Beam, Stamey, Taylor, Green, and Ross Hall dorm rooms offer much more. Whether using the room for studying, relaxing after classes, enjoying solitude, or for the gathering of friends, the dorm is the one place that a student can claim as his own upon arriving at college. Perhaps one reason for this mutual respect has been the fact that the students understand that the tutors have to maintain order and discipline within the dorms. The week before finals mixed the combination of a modern Christmas Dance, and an Elizabethan Yulefest that provided the outlet needed to relax. The Yulefest was a joint effort of the First United Methodist Church and the Brevard College Community. During the Yulefest a delicious holiday banquet was served in conjunction with Yuletide entertainment celebrating the birth of Christ through music and drama. Box 1760 Albert Rd Leesburg. FL 32748 Index 199 During reflections of the year past, we realize the growth and changes that have occurred on our campus as well as In our nation. With the remodeling of Dunham Music Building, great inconveniences were encountered. Students, teachers and music classes were scattered throughout the campus, while waiting for the new facilities to be finished. Students faced issues which gave them an opportunity to share ideas with administrators and the question arose, does it take strict action for students to recognize the difference between a right and a privilege? On November 4, 1 980, Ronald Reagan was voted into the office of President of the United States by a landslide. With this change in the seat of government power, new questions and hopes for our country rose. The United States experienced a great revival of patriotism in conjunction with the Iranian holding of 52 American hostages. After 444 days of captivity the Americans were returned home on January 20, 1981. Was it deliberate or by coincidence that they were set free on our Inauguration Day? The United States faces a Russia inching closer and closer to Poland, thus ■ raising the possibility of war. The war between Iran and Iraq continues, and tensions mount in the Middle East. Meanwhile, in the United States, males born in 60 and 61 were required to register for the draft. Domestic violence was an ever present problem, and the violence on our city streets was brought in sharp focus in late November of 1 980 when a worldwide institution came to an end. Ex-Beatle John Lennon was gunned down outside his home in New York City by Michael David Chapman. As we leave this pari of our lives behind to begin new tomorrows, we are faced with many uncertainties. Our economy is in a downward spiral while prices, especially these of fuel and food, are increasing. As the future leaders of America, we determine the positive and negative progress in our country. The continuing of our education may help us in our search for answers to these questions. Certainl y we have been influenced by our time at Brevard College. 200 Conclusion J Conclusion 201 202 Conclusion Conclusion 203 204 Conclusion Conclusion 205 ' M ' i ' ii i:; 206 Conclusion Crystal Settle Donna Hooper Mrs. Priscilla Chamlee Skip Long D C. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; You have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Found in Old Saint Paul ' s Church, Baltimore; Dated 1692 208
