Center: Mr. and Mrs. Bruch converse with Dr. Martinson during Parent ' s Weekend. Left: Dr. and Mrs. Martinson stop to convey their Thanksgiving wishes to BC students. This year ' s enrollment of 700 students is the largest in Brevard ' s history. Our president, Dr. Jacob Martinson, is pleased and says he hopes that capacity enrollment is a trend. With the student body increasing from year to year, Brevard has the potential to grow, but should never strive to become a multicomplex university. A master plan of the campus has been drawn up and there is talk of refurbishing the auditorium starting in May. Is there really a need for a large school in this area? Dr. Martinson believes that as long as there is a demand for this kind of college, Brevard will remain a small, two-year learning center. Dr. Martinson is naturally concerned that Brevard students receive the best education possible. Any student can develop a mind, but Dr. Martinson feels a well-rounded education is a necessity. What goes on outside the classroom is important too, he states. He would like to see every student have big goals and realize his full potential. Dr. Martinson feels Brevard can continue to turn out real leaders in the years ahead. He would like for Brevard to be the best two-year center of education in the country. At present, we are not far from this goal. Dr. Martinson and his family are important to the Brevard College community. Their love and concern for the campus are shown through the time and effort they spend improving the quality of BC life. Planting flowers is only one example of their interest in all facets of Brevard College. The close relationship found in the Martinson family provides an example for students and faculty alike. Dr. Martinson exemplifies the kind of personal leadership that a small college must have to maintain its standards and progress. Campus security handles a wide range of headaches for the Brevard College Community. From patrolling campus to opening doors, security guards are always ready to aid students or faculty with any problem. This one act plav was written by Peter Shaffer, a contemporary British playwright. Centered around young sculptorBrinsley Miller, portrayed by Robert Sheperd, and his debutante girlfriend Carol Melkett, portrayed by Karen Quick, this comedy moves from one outrageously funny circumstance to another as the young couple attempt to impress not only a world renowned art collector but also Carol ' s father. The action is complicated by the electric blackout, the arrival of Peter ' s ex-girlfriend, and the return of the neighbor from whom the couple borrowed antiques without permission. As the play comes to a close, the members of the audience are forced to resolve the complications in their own imaginations. Black Comedy was another fine example of an outstanding dramatic production under the direction of Mr. Sam Cope. Who ' s Who is a national honor award based on a high academic standing, leadership ability, community service, and future potential. Each year, outstanding students from over 500 colleges are recognized. Their biographies are published in Who ' s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. The largest number of foreign students are from Japan, yet there are many other countries represented, including Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, England, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and the West Indies. The foreign students have given everyone a better understanding of different cultures and countries. The Greek Nights, sponsored by each dorm, proved to be the most popular form of dorm entertainment. Competition between the dorms has been encouraged by Derby Day and Intramural sports. Whether living in Jones, Taylor, Green, Stamey, East Beam, or West Beam, the dorm has provided a home away from home. Above: Preston Birckner dances at one of the Greek nights held in each dorm. Dorm Life 159 Facing a Difficult Task — Doing It We The title of resident tutor on the BC campus is synonomous with hard work, patience, understanding, and discipline. Resident tutors not only live in the dorm as counselors and friends, but also handle whatever problems may arise, from unlocking doors to disciplining campus rule violators. They must balance their different roles with tact and diplomacy. Tutors spend long hours helping students understand problems encountered in the classroom and in personal relationships. Presently, the world lies on the verge of upheaval as the Iranians hold the world hostage, the Soviets threaten the existence of democracy and the draft seems sure to be reinstated. Through all of these crises, we must put our lives in perspective and establish our role in the ultimate diminishing of these and other international conflicts. Because of the uncertainty of the future of our world, it is frightening to realize that we will shape the future of a planet that sometimes seems to have no shape at all. This is the conclusion of only one short phase of our lives, but the conclusion of this phase marks the beginning of another. It is only through believing in ourselves as a country and as individuals that we shall find the determination and the will to overcome. Reprinted by permission from TIME, The Weekly Newsmagazine.
