Wm T- Traveling down a nine mile stretch of the French Broad River on an overcast September after- noon by boat is one thing, but to try it in an inner tube is quite an- other. Yet forty-one adventurous students made the trip in tubes from fourteen inches to enormous airplane tires. Under the direction of Coach Campbell and Mr. Al- derman, the voyage was success- fully completed in four hours, and, fortunately, with no significant casualties! 24 Campus Life Campus Life 25 26 Campus Life Activities got underway in early October for the two social organizations on campus, the Nemos and Delphians. Induction of new members, involved a week-long, fun-filled initiation, climaxed by the traditional mud battle on the seventh day. This event and the many others en- countered as a member of these groups are important to many in the development of a memorable college life. Campus Life 27 f LCQME RL-UV ' Packed with happening, the Homecoming weekend began on Friday, October 12, with myriads of returning alumni. Festivities were acti- vated on Friday evening with the Social Board ' s presentation of Brian ' s Song. Following the movie, the cheerleaders and soccer players teamed up to spark the spirit of the occasion with a pep rally. Saturday morning began bright and early for many who were up to transform their liv- ing quarters into individual versions of Fantasy Land, with Beam Dorm winning for the best dec- oration. At 1:30 the Brevard Tornadoes success- fully challenged the Western Carolina Ca ts in Cross Country and at 2:00 the soccer team tooK me field against Montreat-Anderson, easily defeating them. Half-time activities included the presentation of the Homecoming Court, selected this year from a bal- lot of ten sophomores and eight freshmen women chosen by the Cross Country and Soccer teams Presented were Anne Carpenter, Kathy Kiser, Debbie Renick, Cindy Nanney and Sharon Gregory. In addition a flashy display was pre- sented by the Girls Corps from Monroe, Georgia As a musical supplement to Saturday supper, Rick Pusey, Frank Cothran and company played an as- sortment of rock. At 8:00 p.m. Saturday Dunham auditorium was converted into the Land of Fantasy with live music by Nantucket Sleigh- ride. Midway through the dance came the anxious- ly awaited moment when President Davis crowned Anne Carpenter as the 1973 Homecoming Queen. 28 Homecoming Homecoming 29 30 Homecoming • W 7 - : ; v; Homecoming 31 opposite right: Coach Campbell meets with a committee of the Student Union Legislature; opposite top: President of the Student Union Legislature, M. The students found him to be an honest person, for the true warmth and ' friendliness he showed on stage was also shown off stage when he mingled with the student body. 38 Campus Life Celebrated Flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya captivated an ex- tremely responsive audience as he performed at Brevard College in January. His appearance was one of a series of the 1973-1974 Lyceum Series. Montoya ' s performance in- cluded seventeen pieces selected from his wide repertoire, many of which had recently been recorded. Campus Life 39 Two months of dramatic effort culmi- nated in the production of The Miracle Worker. The drama, which utilized the talent of college students and some towns- people, notably Mrs. Selena Robinson, was presented November 8, 9 and 10. Directed by Sam Cope, the cast was brought to life by Libby Deese as Annie Sullivan, Jenny Miller as the young Helen Keller, Gina Martin as Kate Keller and James Barnhill as James Keller. Other cast members in- cluded David Rutledge, Julia Davis and Keith Sargent. The setting, designed by Sam Cope, was executed by the Theater Arts Workshop. 40 Campus Life Campus Life 41 42 Campus Life April 4-6, the Fine Arts Division presented the exciting musical Hello, Dolly! Dolly Levi was por- trayed by Mrs. Marion Whatley and Horace Van- dergelder by Mr. Harvey Miller, both of the faculty. Other main characters were students Debbie Dea- ton, Jim Barnhill, Debbie Carr, Charles Jennette, Laura Funk, Clara DeLoach and Pete Merlin. How easy and inexpensive it once was to buy a tank full of gas and who would have ever thought he would be setting his thermostat at 68° in the middle of the winter. Only two or three years ago the supply of re fined fuel began to dwindle. Occasional brownouts oc- curred across the nation to preserve overloaded generators. Then the cost of oil and gasoline began to rise and, more recently, the government began to ration essential fuels. Now for the two or three-car-family accustomed to full gas tanks on demand, $3.00 worth of gasoline is a valuable possession. Due to unseasonably warm weather, however, many Americans were able to avoid a devastatingly cold winter. Large cars have given way to smaller ones and by the request of President Nixon, the maximum speed limit on highways and interstates was reduced from 70 to 55 m.p.h. The gasoline customer now finds that he must wait in long lines for his allotment. The stations are open only briefly during the day and rarely on Sun- days. The Energy Crisis is truly affecting the entire nation. Coming to Brevard to replace acting Dean Eugene Lovely, Dr. Thurston made himself immed- iately at home. For some it means somewhere to go and something to do on those lazy fall afternoons, but for most, it means a chance to exhibit their approval of a most de- serving group of determined young men. Playing the toughest schedule in the school ' s history, the 1973 Brevard College Soccer Team nevertheless completed its season with a suc- cessful 11-4 record. Coach Campbell felt that the season had its ups and downs but with the aid of All-American Rajai Kayal, the team finished as Conference Champions and Region X Cham- pions. Cross Country season 1973, ended with a very successful 10-2 record, with losses only to Furman and Clemson Universities. By con- trolling the first seven places, the Roadrun- ners won the Regional meet for the fourth consecutive year. Although Brevard finished a disappointing 17th place in a field of 35 teams in the Nationals, they achieved this place with an all-freshman team. The best team efforts came at Stone Moun- tain where the Roadrunners finished 8th out of 19 junior and senior colleges, 2nd at the Cumberland Invitational, and 6th at the state meet in Raleigh. Brevard was the only two year college to run in the state meet. Mike Bailey currently holds the Brevard course record at 20:03, previously held by All-American Reginald McAfee at 20:34. Ac- cording to Coach Witek, who was selected Region X coach of the year, this was the best overall team I ' ve had, not only in their running ability, but also in their dedication and attitude. There ' s no doubt in my mind that we should have finished 10th place in the Na- tionals, and I still believe it! 96 Sports center: Team works out on Agony Hill; left: Coach Witek prior to Win- gate — Milligan — Brevard race; bottom: George Howe, Keith Fergu- son and Sean Diltz get advice from Coach; opposite: George Howe, Karl Ragsdale and Sean Diltz cross 1 1 4 mile mark. Sports 97 It was a year of new beginnings for the 1973-1974 Brevard College Tornadoes. A new coach, John Meyerhoff, came from Virginia with a new strategy. A new line-up in- cluded several new players. And one new set of uniforms had been purchased. Maybe it was all the newness ' that hindered the team; maybe not. Nevertheless, the Tor- nadoes ended their season with a 10-16 overall tabulation, and sixth in the WCJCC Conference with a 5-9 record. Inexperience might have been a problem for the team Those players with experience had to play unfamiliar positions. The Tornadoes undoubtedly had the potential, just not all the ingredi- ents. As Coach Meyerhoff said: A team has to be more than the sum of its players. But, still, the Tor- nadoes were a team, and they worked and learned together. above right: Coach Meyerhoff outlines a special defensive play; above: Brevard cheerleaders support the Tornadoes; right: Melvin Scales passes inside to Bryan Jones. 98 Sports left: Ronnie Jones passes off to Dave Ballenger; below: Bryan Jones shoots over Lees-McRae de- fender; bottom: In the Montreat-Anderson game, Bryan Jones battles for the ball. ■: © (3 ft «3 •- above. 1973-1974 Basketball Team: seafed; Manager Tom Wheeler, Tony Creekmore, Ronnie Jones, Skip Miller, Bill Bradley, Statistician Jim Kaplan; standing: Coach John Mey- erhoff, Melvin Scales, Jim Slee.
