With an enrollment of less than five hundred, students find their college relationships very meaningful. Even though the students are closely drawn together, they each find individualism brought out and emphasized in their daily lives. The college student finds himself alone for the first time, making his own signifi- cant decisions and reaches out to find and grasp life at its fullest. Not only does he want to establish his own identity but he wants also to relate to those around him. 2(1 Campus I ife SirU« « {M « i i  ' i ' S ' ' - 1.1S i«i.«« ■ - •- as ■ S8 cs: sxs CT£S Campus Life 21 I 22 Campus Life HHH HBHBSSwltJ : : -, - ' ' I tLLLJ r_: 3 33= - 7? College and community have joined together to form PACE, a project by which students have an opportunity to help pay their own expenses. Five Brevard College students are currently in- volved: Frank Blount, Maureen O ' Connor, An- nette Potts. Linda Sharpe and Mary Steele. The First Adventure Center, under the direction of Mrs. Jane Hill, is housed in the First United Methodist Church, directly across from the campus. The children with whom they work at the Day Care Center are from two to five years of age. By reading stories, teaching numbers, letters and colors, and playing games, PACE workers learn the responsibilities involved and try to be of maximum help to each child. With this type of relationship the students and chil- dren are drawn closer together. One cannot help smiling when a two-year-old exclaims: Hi, Frank, we missed you! Campus political organizations were formulated in support of two Presidential candidates - Richard M. Nixon and George S. McGovern. Even though the two organizations were unable to arouse much enthusiasm, their stickers, but- tons, and propoganda were well distributed. Major emphasis had seemed to favor McGovern; however, following a mock election held by the Stu- dent Union Legislature. Nixon won 7 1 % of the popular student vote. ' ' ;r . B!Wm tt In August students registered for the 1972-1973 academic year. To these individuals Brevard had promised a quality education built on a sound purpose, program and physical facilities. The sophomores had evidently found a reason for their being at Brevard; the freshmen were searching. Some would find their quality education , others would never realize the meaning of the term. Education at Brevard, as at any institution, is a two-way street. Brevard College has something to offer each person, but equally important, each person has something to offer Brevard. A quality education is a reciprocal experience; one learns by giving as well as by receiving. A college education is not a package deal with a degree as the only goal. A diploma remains just a piece of paper until the student whose name has been embossed has learned to feel, to understand, to relate. Learning is not limited to the classroom. However, it is in this environment that the student receives one of two major portions of his education. With a student-faculty ratio of approximately 10-1, the classes were small, thus lending themselves to dialogue rather than lecture. On the whole, the facul- ty was outstanding, not only for their knowledge of the subject matter they were teaching, but also for their concern for the student ' s personal as well as his academic welfare. Some students responded by accepting what Bre- vard offered. They in turn contributed much. Whether their contribution was simply their presence in class or active involvement both in academic and extracurricular affairs, their concerned responsibility helped to shape the year at Brevard, not only for themselves, but for others as well. Becom- ing a part of the whole, yet maintaining individuality is an important aspect of quality education. There were some, as always, who refused to become a part of the college and in so doing found little meaning. A college is more than a group of buildings, just as an education is more than merely attending class. Each person involved to any degree, whether it be on the administrative, faculty, or student level, has the ability to shape Brevard College into what he wishes it to be. The 1972- 1973 academic year is what we as individuals have made it. 3C£aJBSt£S33CS MM 1 « ll |ll.N.M« •SBSEriEfl finsaz ! In addition to his many other duties. Dr. Robert A. Davis (right). The team ' s enthusiastic determination, exertion and devo- tion concealed its lack of experience and size. One reason for the team ' s success was the strength and proficiency of its playing ability. Another was the moral support given the players by the student fans. What began as a simple basketball excursion devel- oped into an unforgettable exper- ience. The team played Baptist College in Charleston on Friday night. February 9, and were returning to Brevard when they suddenly ran into heavy show which finally accumulated to betweeen 21 and 24 inches in depth. After much hazardous driving they finally reached a small service station near Harleyville where they found three other stranded travelers. Within a couple hours more than fifty had gathered. According to reports re- ceived by the college, the girls were cheerful and helpful, giving first aid to newly arriving and half-frozen people. Even more important, they kept everyone ' s spirits up with their light-hearted acceptance of the situa- tion. The Jaycees later rescued every- one and took them back to Harley- ville where they continued to help. It takes something like this restore your faith in mankind the girls told me, says Miss Anderson. In the perspective of the famous snow storm of 1973 perhaps this basketball season was one of the most successful for the Women ' s Cagers. Lifting Arising out of the necessity for training in the various field events — discus, javelin, and shot-put, Brevard ' s first official weightlifting team was formed this year. With major emphasis upon the Olympic lifts for overall body strength and toneness. the power clean and jerk, snatch, full squat, bench press, and other specialized lifts received in- tense concentration. Unofficially leading as coach and captain was Lee Stoffel. The four other partici- pants in the grueling mind-over- matter sport were John Johnson. Mike Martin. Jim Daly and Bill Lanham. t - «!.
