Why College? Why Brevard? Beautiful Brevard, cradled in the heart of the Blue Bidge Mountains, radiates a peaceful and placid atmos- phere. This setting enables the student to recognize his personal responsibility ' . Seeking compassion, the student receives understand- ing. Struggling for honor he becomes humble. Beaching for the eternal why? of the universe, he acquires not the answer but the reason. Stumbling and falling, he sees al- ways ahead that ambition, that crown of fame and honor which is success. He grasps for goodness and touches God. He searches for spiritual guidance and gains kindness. His goal is a mirage, a vision; for the ultimate goal is always another goal with a higher scope. Then what is this objective called college ? What is the implication of the sweeping term College Life? It is only an interlude in the broad expanse of a human life, but it can shape and mold that life into something meaningful. Ideas and ideals-accepted, reject- ed, weighed and pondered-this is college. Education is the response of the enlightened mind to the stimuli of environment. It is learning. Life itself is learning. Educa- tion, then, is life. It is the giving of the utmost part of himself to all in which he believes. It is living to the farthest extent and the final detail. It is sacrifice, sleepless nights, tears and despair. It is argument, debate, realization and rationalization. The triumph of mind over matter— this is college. But most important, college is progress. Man is mov- ing either forward or backward. When he regresses he loses all that he has gained. If he has gained nothing he has made no progress. This is why there is college-a place to grow, improve, and change. Facts are acquired which will never be forgotten, errors are made which will never be repeated, moments are gained— important mo- ments—which can never be wasted. This is college. This is education. This is life.
