Why College? Why Brevard? Beautiful Brevard, cradled in the heart of the Blue Bidge Mountains, radiates a peaceful and placid atmos- phere. This setting enables the student to recognize his personal responsibility ' . Seeking compassion, the student receives understand- ing. Struggling for honor he becomes humble. Beaching for the eternal why? of the universe, he acquires not the answer but the reason. Stumbling and falling, he sees al- ways ahead that ambition, that crown of fame and honor which is success. He grasps for goodness and touches God. He searches for spiritual guidance and gains kindness. His goal is a mirage, a vision; for the ultimate goal is always another goal with a higher scope. Then what is this objective called college ? What is the implication of the sweeping term College Life? It is only an interlude in the broad expanse of a human life, but it can shape and mold that life into something meaningful. Ideas and ideals-accepted, reject- ed, weighed and pondered-this is college. Education is the response of the enlightened mind to the stimuli of environment. It is learning. Life itself is learning. Educa- tion, then, is life. It is the giving of the utmost part of himself to all in which he believes. It is living to the farthest extent and the final detail. It is sacrifice, sleepless nights, tears and despair. It is argument, debate, realization and rationalization. The triumph of mind over matter— this is college. But most important, college is progress. Man is mov- ing either forward or backward. When he regresses he loses all that he has gained. If he has gained nothing he has made no progress. This is why there is college-a place to grow, improve, and change. Facts are acquired which will never be forgotten, errors are made which will never be repeated, moments are gained— important mo- ments—which can never be wasted. This is college. This is education. This is life. Beautiful Brevard radiates a peaceful and placid atmosphere . . struggling for honor ' why? His out-going nature and solid integrity made him a much sought-out counselor by students, and made of the college store much more than just a place of business. His love of God and loyalty to His Church, his devotion to his family and friends, his infectious humor and sweetness of spirit even in the face of declining health, made him beloved by all. His spirit truly resembled the lofty mountains that he loved. To him the PERTELOTE staff devotedly dedicates the 1963 edition. A warm smile and a friendhj greeting always welcomed College Store customers. Never too busy to discuss the news of the day. Through the S. G. A. the student develops a loyalty to the college and to himself, social and personal awareness, and a sense of honor which will enable him to have strength in his personal convictions. Where there is a college, there must be laws to govern that college. Through the officers of the S. G. A. every student is permitted the opportunity to aid in the establishment of these laws. He himself helps set the standards, and it is his personal responsibility to meas- ure up to them. Some one has to be kidding— there are only jour aces in a deck! A good musical comedy helps relieve the tensions of a hectic week. The Brevard College S. G. A. sponsors the social activities on campus. Among these are the homecoming dance, the student lounge, movies for the student body, and picnics. This organization plays a tremendous part in welcoming new students. Advisers to S. G. A. are Mrs. Alma Dellinger, Mr. Ray Fisher, Mr. Richard Howe, and Dean Eston Roberts. Sara Moores, Secretary-Treasurer; Ken Bamette, Vice-President; Betsy McLean, Social Chairman. The Women ' s House Council endeavors to help each person realize that she is an important part of this life and therefore, must show courtesy not only to her classmates and teachers, but to others in the dormitory as well. Annually, the Council presents Christ- mas at Home . The girls decorate the dormitory and invite faculty, administration, students and friends to observe and share in the holiday spirit. The Council is composed of officers elected bv the women students and meets regularly to discuss situations and problems relating to dorrm ' tory life.
