INTRODUCTION Brevard College, beautiful in campus grounds, and contemporarv in build- ings and educational philosophy, honors its Methodist sponsorship and its earlv origin. The college dates from 1853 when Rutherford College was founded by Kobert Laban Abernethy, a Methodist minister. Initially, the college was an academ ' , and through progressive stages came to be a seminar)- and a four-year college unti its union with Weaver College and Bre ard Institute into Brevard College at the site of Brevard Institute. Weaver College, so named in 1912, was incorporated in 1872 under the ?c?, ' ' ' °( - ' ' ■ - San. and became a Methodist college officiallv in 1883. Bre erd Institute was founded in 1895 bv Reverend and Mrs. Fitch Taylor as a pioneering venture among mountain young people.
