PERTELOTE BREVARD COLLEGE Brevard, North Carolina Foreword LOOKING GLASS FALLS THE WATERFALL With what deep murmurs through times silent stealth. Doth thy transparent, cool and watry wealth Here flowing fall, And chide, and call, As if his liquid, loose retinue staid Lingering, and were of this steep place afraid, The common pass Where, clear as glass. All must descend Not to an end, But quickned by this deep and rocky grave, Rise to a longer course more bright and brave. —Henry Vaughan Brevard College is located in Tran- sylvania County, called the Land of Waterfalls. The natural beauty of the mountain streams is enhan- ced by hundreds of cascading waterfalls. Here presented are some of the most famous of the falls to help you remember your college days in these surroundings as you rise to a longer course more bright and brave. CHAMPS Big John Eller cuts down the net after the Tornadoes had won the conference championship by defeating Wingate. Glover Coggins and Tom Barbee, pictured with Coach Martin, were selected for the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. They are holding the trophies won by the Tornadoes in the 1959 and 1960 Junior Classic Tournaments held in Brevard. BASKETBALL SPECIAL Wayne Huntley, Cecil Clark, and Don Cooper pack the car for the trip to Greer, South Carolina, where the Brevard Tornadoes won the W.C.J.C. Conference Tournament by defeating Spartan- burg, 92-72; Wingate, 73-68; and North Greenville, 97-73. Don Harbour, Poochie Harris, H. M. Summey, and Dick Cannon look on, as they prepare to leave. Wb BASKETBALL SPECIAL The Brevard Junior College Tornadoes were led by Coach L. W. (Chick) Martin to a 21-4 record during the regular 1960-1961 season, the conference and tourna- ment championships, and a berth in the National Junior College Tournament at Hutchinson, Kansas. This was the first time that a team had accomplished this fine rec- ord under the leadership of Coach Martin. Coach Martin credited teamwork as the reason the Tornadoes were able to capture these championships. Individual scoring averages were: Tom Barbee, 23.56; Charlie Jacobs, 13.4; Glover Coggins, 10.1; John Eller, 9.7; and Larry Brooks, 9.6. Although the team could not have won without the first five, the reserves contributed much to the success of the team and they are to be congratulated for their efforts. This has been the most successful season in the history of Brevard College and the PERTELOTE Staff, along with the entire student body say, Congratulations on a wonderful season. We are very proud of all of you, not only for your achievements on the basketball court, but also for your high academic standards and moral integrity. Conference tournament championship trophy on the right. The student body gathered early Saturday morning, March 11, to send the team off to Hutchinson, Kansas, where they played in the National Junior College Tournament. Although the boys did not win in Kansas, they represented Brevard College well.
