Mathematics The department of mathematics aims to maintain the liberal arts tradition by presenting mathemat- ics as a challenging and worth- while academic discipline. The relevance of mathematics to the fields o ' pure and applied natural sciences, to the social sciences, to the professions and industry makes for an inexhaustible supply of mo- tivating material.
