Languages The English requirement of Brevard College- four semesters-is high as compared with most colleges, for it is felt that English is a basic necessity not only in relation to other courses but to culture and life in general. The aim of instruction in English is two-fold: to provide stu- dents with the skills for effective oral and written communication, and to acquaint them, by way of literature, with the best that has been thought and said. The formal study of French and Spanish give a grasp and understanding of English grammar difficult to attain in any other way. It proves the truth of the old saying that He knows but little English who only English knows. The advanced literature in foreign languages afford vital frag- ments of the country ' s history, geography, cus- toms, thinking, ambitions, and philosophy of life. Although the word of history is used a great deal in the formulation of future plans it is by no means used in a fatalistic sense. Rather, the advice of his- tory attempts to purge our creativeness from unneces- sary blunders. wmm
