ifi(iminnmnMr w tllMM , ™ M,tm 1956 PERTELOTE Annual publication of the students of Brevard College Brevard, North Carolina Martha Fortune Editor-in-chief Jimmy Gaither, Jr. Business Manager Weldon Hall Faculty Advisor ?r In this, the twenty-second edition of the PERTELOTE, we, the 1956 staff, have made an effort to bring to you the history of our yearbook. We have attempted to por- tray the relationship between the campus life and the ideas presented in the Nonne Preestes Tale. Chaucer ' s tale provided a source from which the name of our annual was derived. Pertelote was the wise hen most admired by the gallant Chanticleer. In order to suggest our relationship to Duke University, whose annual is entitled Chanticleer, the 1935 staff chose Pertelote as the name of the first edition of a yearbook at Brevard College. Looking still further in the Nonne Preestes Tale, we emphasized the idea that dremes ben significa- ciouns. From the time Brevard College came into existerce it has endeavored to instill in each student the Christian ideals and principles of sound scholarship. Its future depends upon the courage, intelligence, and sacrifice of those who are now seeking to make these dreams come true. May we, the students of 1956, be determined enough to make the next twenty-two years for Brevard College as fruitful as those since the first edition of our Pertelote. IHBtf In grateful acknowledgment of the innumerable services rendered to our college, we take pride in dedicating our 1956 edition of the PERTELOTE to the Town of Brevard. We realize our eventful years at Brevard College would not have been as pleasant had it not been for the unlimited support of our many activities by the Greater Brevard community. It is with deep appreciation that we dedicate this annual to Brevard. ' —Chaucer. ROBERT HENRY STAMEY President of Brevard College A. B. and B. D. Duke University Brevard College is dedicated to the cause of Christian higher education. Within the context of this noble purpose every facet of its life and program finds expression. Students who profit from this high adven- ture, mentally, morally and physically, will be trained and conditioned to play the game of life to a success- ful and happy conclusion. When one learns to stick to a task until it is finished, to be self-reliant, to stand on his own feet, to have singleness of purpose, to play the game on and off the field, to use his talents to the fullest, he has acquired sufficient habits and attitudes to insure a measure of success. When you go out from the halls of your cherished Alma Mater, go seeking after opportunity for all your worth. Do not wait hopefully for it to come knocking at your door. You must do your own door knocking. Do not go out seeking security. Security can be achieved only by seizing an opportunity and doing such a swell job that you make yourself indispensable to those who employ you. May your aspirations be crowned by high adventure. Western Carolina College Languages The English requirement of Brevard College- four semesters-is high as compared with most colleges, for it is felt that English is a basic necessity not only in relation to other courses but to culture and life in general. The aim of instruction in English is two-fold: to provide stu- dents with the skills for effective oral and written communication, and to acquaint them, by way of literature, with the best that has been thought and said. The formal study of French and Spanish give a grasp and understanding of English grammar difficult to attain in any other way. It proves the truth of the old saying that He knows but little English who only English knows. The advanced literature in foreign languages afford vital frag- ments of the country ' s history, geography, cus- toms, thinking, ambitions, and philosophy of life. It is the night before the paper goes to press. . . . Just after dinner. Tina trudges up to the Clarion office and picks up the envelope to examine the copy. Not much this week ... the printer didn ' t send back the hold-overs from the last edition. One proof-reader saunters in to wade through a pile of typographical errors. Later Nancy comes in, followed by two faithful reporters. She then has to make her way to a phone to call a third not-so-faithful one to find out where her story is. She gives Tina a brief report of the state of campus and dashes off somewhere, bumping into Jackie on the way out. Jackie enters, followed by Calvin, who has a photograph of the faculty in one hand and a sticky bun in the other. Both settle down to finding a picture of the new addition of the girls ' dorm. A columnist, a headwriter, and Marvelous Julie enter. Each grabs a desk in a different office. A loud noise is heard from the stairway, and in run Audrey and Kitty, laughing and joking. They settle at the same desk and continue their discussion. They are soon interrupted as Tina comes flying over their way asking which shall be page one lead: Homecoming or Sophomore election results. The three finally agree to the first and Tina leaves as the girls resume their talk. SECOND ROW, Muncie Millaway, SOCCER TEAM Soccer is rapidly becoming one of the top sports on campus. This year the team was the best since the sport was begun by the athletic department. The par- ticipants in this sport deserve more credit than they get. They, like the basketball team, spend many hours a week practicing. These men truly deserve our appre- ciation. The most outstanding game of the season is played on Homecoming weekend. HOMECOMING GAME SCENE BASEBALL The Brevard baseball nine was sparked by the return of seasoned vets and an excellent crop of yearlings. Coach Martin, in his first year as baseba pilot, was aided greatly by the large number of candidates out for the team. With the all around good playing of the entire team, the baseball men completed another creditable season. GOLF Golf was more popular on campus this year than ever before. Using the Brevard Country Club greens, Calvin Gaddy, George Steele, Bill Hiter, and Jim Dillard developed skills in the game. Mr. Burchfield and Coach Martin also frequented the course. n GERALD BAKER 6 ' 5 DAVID CUDD 6 ' VANCE LINK 6 ' BREVARD ■■ : B MUNSEY MILLAWAY 6 ' 3 STEVE MITCHELL 5 ' 9 ROSS WINGO 6 r V TORNADOES Jason Smith 6 ' 2 Mickey Beam 6 ' Jim Ingle heads for two points in the Gardner Webb game. ifc Sn This year ' s basketball squad was made up of all freshmen with the exception of center Baker, but Coach Martin developed a team that all teams had to reckon with. Early in the season the Tornadoes were hampered by the loss of Cudd, because of appendicitis. Dur- ing the later part of the season the Tornadoes captured second place by their victory over Mars Hill on the home court. Baker and Smith captained the team to their victories. Brevard may have had a green team at the beginning of the ' 55- ' 56 season, but only one man will be lost through graduation. All the rest will be back to see action in the ' 56- ' 57 season. Good luck to a hnrd-fighting team. Gerald Baker tips ball on opening piay. Jason Smith recovers ball in game with Spartanburg. INTRAMURAL .-«• JLlTT . % Brevard is a sports minded school. It seems to be the universal urge around campus to urge the flying ball and exercise the limbs. One need not necessarily be a member of a varsity squad to avail himself of the benefits of sports. Through the extensive intramural program the novice athlete may participate in team sports and individual ones.
