Because we have chosen music as our theme, we have endeavored to lend unity and interest to our record by means of song titles. —The Staff J- retudc For his patience and kindness in guiding and advising the Music Department, his service and co-operation with all school activities, and his unending effort to make Brevard a better college, we take pleasure in dedicating this the 1949 Pertelote to -. WaLin n mu It is too simple to sing the praises of the man who has filled Brevard with song. Jhere judlc in the s rir , ji m essa ae to the CLss of 1949 What are you doing? Let this be a personal message to every member in the class. Please read it and then give us your full cooperation. We have made many improvements in recent years; but with these developments we are not resting on our oars. We are now laying the ground work for an aggressive campaign for a science building, an auditorium and music building combined, a new dormitory for men, and the enlargement of Taylor Hall, the main dormitory for young women. Along with these improvements, we must provide an administration building and re- model Dunham Hall. Of course, such a building program will call for large and substantial gifts. Naturally we must justify our appeal. To do that, we must show what Brevard College has done in the past and what its future should be. In telling this story we must rely on you. Eugene J. COLLEGE BAND AND BUS keer 7 0- ou$, C A 99 leer SEASON OF FOOTBALL The Brevard College Tornadoes breezed through their season this year with a record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Of the games played with conference teams, they won 3 out of 5 to come out at the end of the season with second place in the conference standings. The men in blue opened the football season with a 14 to 7 win over Western Carolina here. The following week they tangled with Asheville- Biltmore in Asheville and lost by a score of 19 to 7. This defeat didn ' t dishearten our team here in Brevard in a game which resulted in a 13 to 13 deadlock. The Tornadoes traveled to Lees-McRae after that, and lost a hard fought game 13 to 7 in the closing minutes of play. Our pigskin battlers played their toughest op- ponent October 21, when High Point College came to Brevard. The boys played outstanding ball but lost by two touchdowns — 19 to 7. After this came the big homecoming game with Gardner-Webb. The fellows made many an old grad feel good that night of October 30 by win- ning 14 to 13. The team journeyed to Cul- lowhee November 14 and made it two in a row over Western Carolina by the score of 14 to 0. This brought our team to their last game which was with Mars Hill, Brevard ' s old rival. The game was played at Mars Hill. Brevard stu- dents will talk about that fray for vears to come because the Brevard College boys played their most brilliant game of the season. The team scored the first three times they had possession of the ball, to come out with a 33 to 13 victory which brought to an end a very successful season. Members of the team who played their last game this year are Ernest Traynham, Clifton Riggins, John McKissick, Frank McGill, Herman Walker, Harry Martin, Earl Sorrells, Eugene Baucom, David Rogers, Lander Beal, Earnest Gilstrap, Millard Bason, Richard Medlin, LaNue Floyd, Joe Price, Guy Christo- pher, Fred Elkins, and Jack McCauley. Three of our boys made the All-Conference Team. They were Ernest Traynham, Clifton Riggins, and Hershey Hipps. Two of the team made honorable mention on the same team. These were William Martin and Bruce Jamer- son. Although the boys were responsible to a great extent for Brevard ' s successful season, stu- dents must not forget the very capable coaches who were a main factor in the college ' s winning. They were Jack Alexander, head coach; Bob Swicegood, line coach; and R. F. Andrews, back- field coach. Brevard College hats are off to them. Although they won only 8 and lost 12 of the total games played, they held an .8 of a point advantage over their opponents per game. During the sea- son they scored a total of 1075 points to 1058 for the opposing teams. The all conference team has not, as yet, been named; but it is almost certain that King, a mem- ber of last year ' s all conference team, is a sure bet to be on it again this year. He has an aver- age of 18.7 points per game to be ranked as second in the conference. M ' -■% ' ■- .
