We have tried to record this expansion in pictures showing the Growing Pains of the college. According to custom no student is listed in the Pertelote without a picture. c D e dl c ct tio n THE 1948 PERTELOTE IS DEDICATED to a man who has won the respect and affection of all students of Brevard College, DR. BURT W. LOOMIS, Director of Guidance and head of the Department of Education and Psychology. Through his vocational guidance and in- dividual counseling he has helped many students to find the position in life where they will be happiest and most successful. r- EUGENE JARVIS COLTRANE A.B., A.M., Ed.D. Jl Wessage to tlie Class of 1948 BREVARD COLLEGE is on the march! Within the past fifteen months we have made very substantial material developments. The grounds are alive with various phases of construction activity. New roads and new walks will be completed within the next few weeks. The entire campus is becoming more beautiful day by day. We have the largest enrollment in our history and the largest and best equipped faculty also. Our students have greater opportunities than ever before. Let me suggest that we do not think too much about our material prosperity and that we make a greater effort to develop our spiritual resources. Material developments will decay and perish. The qualities that will endur° and guarantee future success have their beginnings in our mental and spiritual aspirations. We will do well to ponder these truths as the days and years go by. c3?. te Eugene J. Coltrane President of the College Faculty and Administrative Staff MISS KATE ANDERSON Music ROBERT F. ANDREWS. Mi IN THERE FIGHTING JltkletU 1947-1948 The Football Season Even though the Brevard College football team did not have an impressive record this season, the school spirit was high among both player s and students. Each player gave everything he had in practice sessions as well as in the games. Luck seemed to be against Brevard, especially in the first five games. Statistics always showed our team to be the best, but they were always on the short end of the score. Our opponent for the last game of the season was our old rival, Mars Hill. The entire student body turned out in spite of a drizzling rain. The team responded by completely outclassing Mars Hill in every department and winning the most impor- tant game of the season. The whole squad saw action, and each man played heads up football. Any list of the outstanding players of the year would include the entire squad; but the fine playing of Cline, Walker, Traynham, Ashworth, Winchester, and Crowe was noticeable in every game. Bottom Row: Johnny Misenheimer, Heyward Buchanan, Guy Christopher, Jim Miller, Harry Martin, Bull Traynham, LeRoy Thompson, James Armstrong, Beef Walker. Captain John Cline and Co-Captain Herman Walker Johnny and Beet led the team through the season. We take our hats off to them for their capable leadership. With a total of seven wins against nine losses, they were the team to watch until two first stringers graduated in the middle of the season. The Tornadoes won three conference games and lost seven. Only two teams beat them in more than one game. King, high scoring center, was the spark of the team and was named to an All-Conference position. Morgan, Sizemore, DeLapp, Riggins, Seay, and the Marcus brothers were the outstanding players in regular and relief roles. Against Mars Hill, our traditional rival, we split the two games. With all except two of this year ' s squad returning, we look to 1949 as a banner year for Brevard basketball. Left to right: Sizemore, Forward; G.
