4 ojevA C QLLEC 1853-2003 James A. Jones Library Brevard, North Carolina 28712 Ex Libris J THE 1945 PERTELOTE Marches I FEBRUARY COMMENCEMENT MARSHALS Anna Lee Bauman, Chief Marsha] Ruth Lewis Elizabeth Ray Ethel Bratcher Jeffery Coltrane Christine Crawford Caroline Warren In June 1944 Brevard College celebrated its tenth anniversary, round- ing out a decade of service and achievement. This celebration was marked by the return of many alumni and members o f the Board of Trustees. There was a full week-end of fun and fellowship, which was climaxed by a pageant, The Bells of Brevard, presented on West Hall lawn by the faculty, students, and alumni. This year, 1944-45, marks the beginning of another decade of growth and improvement. As we look into the future we see Brevard College a larger and finer institution for all those who come here. Already many improvements have been made. The gymnasium, built by the students and friends of the College, is in the process of being enlarged. At the meeting of the alumni during the 1944 Home-Coming, a fund was started for the library in memory of Mr. C. E. Buckner, former dean of the Col- lege. Already ' additions are being made to the contents of the library. The walk from West Hall to Taylor Hall has been paved. Because of an in- crease in students, Ross Hall ' has been re-opened as a dormitory for boys; and Taylor Hall, from roof to basement, is full of girls. Virginia Lodge is not in use. f offer 1 fct This year Brevard College has not only grown but has enlarged its offerings. An art department, under the direction of Mrs. Bramlett, has been added to the curriculum. This year also, in addition to voice and piano, violin is taught. In the summer of 1944 Brevard College lent dorm- itory space and other forms of cooperation to the Transylvania Music Camp under the direction of Mr. Pfohl. The concerts on the campus were an enjoyable phase of the summer school entertainment program. Although it has been a year of hard work for many, it has been one of pleasure. There has always been the never-tiring work and inspiration of our president, the never-ending determination of our faculty for better character and higher achievement in our students, and a spirit of loyalty in the alumni and friends of the College to keep us pressing hopefully toward the future. The same zeal and determination that have brought Brevard College through the last ten years will carry it successfully into the future, with even greater and more significant accomplishments. DEDICATION The 1945 Pertelote is dedicated to Mr. Caney Edward Buck- ncr, whose death occurred on September 29, 1944. Mr. Buckner came to Brevard College in the summer of 1935 and served as dean and registrar for seven years. Subsequently he went to Chapel Hill, where he was principal of the high school and later a member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina. His sudden and unexpected passing brought poignant sorrow to his many Brevard College friends. In an effort to perpetuate the inspiration of his memory, to give recognition to the fine integrity of his character, and to extend im- measurably the beneficent influence of a creative life, the Alumni Association of Brevard College has initiated a Caney E. Buckner memorial fund drive to raise $10,000 for the Brevard College Library. The gift of good books to the present and oncoming classes at Brevard is a fitting tribute to one whose unfailing kindness, unfal- tering service, and unquestioned faith in the potentialities of youth so endeared him to all his friends. The Pertelote, in dedicating this volume to Mr. Buckner, is affirming the belief of the Staff that a good man ' s life is a light, both to those who remember him and to those who encounter the blessings he worked for, down unnumbered years. ATHLETICS Mr. Howard Wilkie, pop- ular and efficient coach of football for the 1944 season. ,_ t r , L - --is?s ■■- THE 1944 The Brevard College Tornadoes started off their 1944 season under the guidance of Coach Howard Wil- kie of Skyland. Coach Wilkie, a very capable director, was formerly at W. C. T. C, where he was captain of the team in 1935. The Tornadoes enjoyed a fairly successful season, winning three games and losing five. In almost every game their players were outweighed and up against more experienced players. Those who saw the most action dur- ing the year in the line were Kizer, Shamblin, Heath, Orr, Johnson, Bishop, and Bagby; and in the backfield Ervin, McCall, Newberry, and McDonald. On October 7 the Tornadoes opened the season with a victorious home game against Franklin High School, defeating it 19 to 0. Newberry, McCall, and McDonald scored touchdowns; and Willingham scored an extra point. Acting captain was Kizer. Outweighed twenty pounds a man, Coach Wilkie ' s Tornadoes journeyed to Waynesville High School for their next game on October 13 and came out on the bottom of a 39 to defeat by the heavier and faster Mountaineers. Ervin was acting captain. f TORNADOES The Brevard College eleven next played Canton 1 ligh there on October 20. Brevard led at the hall by the score of 7 to 6, but in the last eight minutes of play Canton scored again and won by the margin of 12 to 6. McCall was acting captain. The Homecoming game of the season was played October 28 against a strong W. C. T. C. team. Brevard scored on a pass from McDonald to McCall, taking the game with a score of 6 to 0. McDonald was acting captain. Christ School took the Tornadoes by the score of 1 3 to 7 on November 4. On Armistice Day the Tornadoes played the Hendersonville Bear Cats there, coming out on the bot- tom of a 7 to defeat. ' The game was packed with thrills and spills. The Tornadoes were outweighed nine- teen pounds to a man. The only marker of the game was made by Pack, Cat back, who ran seventy-Hve yards for a touchdown. Jim Newberry was acting captain. The Golden Tornadoes of Parker High at Greenville defeated the Brevard College eleven 18 to on November 17. An experienced, fast-charging team with plenty of reserves spelled defeat for the Brevard College boys, although they fought on with determination. Acting co-captains were Bagby and I leath. Brevard College defeated Brevard High School by the score of 26 to 7 on Thanksgiving Day. Brevard High School scored their only marker against the Tornadoes ' second team. The heavier line and fleet backs of the college proved too powerful for the high school team. ■.uj i uij « u  BLOCK B CLUB Officers: President, Henry McDonald; Secretary, Edwin Bagby. Special buses have been provided for out-of-town games, and fuller attendance on the home games has been encouraged. The girls in their blue skirts- white sweaters, and glowing faces have added much to the color of the game. Women ' s Physical Education Activity Due to the keen interest of our new Physical Education Director, Miss Ruth Wilson, our gym classes have as their by-product rosier cheeks, straighter backs, brisker strides, and sorer muscles. The romboid contraction, deep-knee bends, ins- and-outs, ups-and-downs tie us in knots — but we love it! Untying ourselves and striv- ing vainly to regain our former positions, we somehow manage to get ourselves lined up on the Softball field. Here we learn not only the rules for the game and the art of playing it, but the spirit of cooperation, congeniality, and good sportsmanship. When Old Man Winter strokes our Softball field with his icy fingers, we make haste to get our torsos into the gymnasium. Even though we are on the inside, there is no let-up on the 1-2-3-4 of the calisthenics. Our sport, however, changes to basket- ball, bringing multiple duties upon the kind and patient Mrs. Capps, our nurse. Sprained ankles, wrists, and fingers are result of our being novices at the game. But much patience and perserverance on Miss Wilson ' s part have pulled us over the bumps and turned the game into great enjoyment for all. Although we ' ve had our ups and downs, we ' ve come out much healthier and happier.
