fjamei. tddUan Patted. Mibtaiif Steaasul, NosUh Gaioluta M THE 1943 PERTELOTE The 1W3 COPYRIGHT M PERTELOTE PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF BREVARD COLLEGE, BREVARD, N. C. a _ M FOREWORD • • • The staff of 1942-43 Pertelote has been forced to face many obstacles in the publication of our book. The war in which our nation is now engaged has been felt not only in our classes but also in the adaptation of college life to the Nation ' s needs. The shortage of materials, the limit of time, and the loss of several valuable staff members who have joined the Armed Forces have required the complete and willing cooperation on the part of every individual. In spite of these difficulties we have tried to present a summary of the activities on our campus during war-time. It gives us great pleasure to honor the many young men and women who have attended Brevard College and are now serving at home or are sta- tioned in the far corners of the world. In our Salute to the Alumni we should have liked to present pictures of all of them, but we could use only such photographs as were available. • • • M PICA TION For her willingness to lend a helping hand in the library to freshmen and sophomores alike, and her tireless efforts to make the social activities on the campus more enjoyable, we dedicate the 1943 issue of the Pertelote to Miss Delia Shore — College Libra- rian from 1934 to 1942. I 65 J ALMA MATER Unto Brevard we ' re ever loyal; We sing to her a song of praise. She gives to us endowments royal To guide us thru life ' s endless maze. CHORUS Brevard, Brevard, our hearts rejoice; Forever and forever we will honor thee. Our College, we will not forsake thee, Nor for one moment will forget; Thy standards in our hearts we ' ll cherish To guide us till our sun has set. A THLETICS MEN ' S ATHLETICS MEN ' S PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS The Men ' s Physical Education and Athletic Department was con- ducted by Miss Nancy Blanton, with the help of Nevin Rice, student assistant. This year our activities in physical education have turned to a physical fitness program on account of the emphasis placed upon physical fitness by the Armed Forces. Along with this type of program we, here at Brevard College, have tried to follow our regular seasonal sports and carry on our athletic program as best we could under the new O.P.A. set-up. Our football season was a big success. The varsity team was under student organization and coaching. 1 he society intramural football games were held as usual this year. In basketball, an intramural tournament was conducted in which the entire student body was divided into counselling groups, each with an organ- ized team and a faculty sponsor. The winning teams were chosen by the percentage of games won. An all-star team, for both men and women chosen on the bases of playing and sportsmanship, was recognized at our annual athletic banquet. Outside the intramural program our varsity team, coached for the first time by a woman, played a scries of scheduled games. Baseball, track, tennis, Softball, speedball, and volley-ball were offered along with the program of calisthenics. CHEER LEADERS Chief: Patricia Brinkley, Hubert Hauss, Eleanor Pettit.
