C. ma ABOUT OUR BOOK In this year ' s annual we have attempted, through the use of snapshots and written matter, to picture the most characteristic aspects of college life — to make a record of the students and their activities throughout the school year of 1941- ' 42. It has been necessary to adapt ourselves, somewhat, to the conditions of wartime; yet at the same time we have kept the spirit and fundamental ideas of Brevard College intact. At the weekly meetings of the staff every single member made invaluable contri- butions, and the Literary and Business Staffs have cooperated fully in producino the annual. We have worked hard, worried a great deal, and enjoyed ourselves im- mensely. In years to come may we all find time, once in a while, to glance through the ' 42 Y J ertelote and remember the good times, the hard work, and, most important, the friends made at Brevard College. ________ DEDICATION For his untiring and enthusiastic work in Physical Education, his sympathetic understand- ing of student problems, and his homely philosophy and Kentucky wit we dedicate the 1942 issue of the Pertehte to Mr. Leonard W. Roberts. K5-- ______ fllma Mater Unto Brevard we ' re ever loyal; We sing to her a song of praise. She gives to us endowments royal To guide us thru life ' s endless maze. CHORUS Brevard, Brevard, our hearts rejoice; Forever and forever we will honor thee. Our College, we will not forsake thee, Nor for one moment will forget; Thy standards in our hearts we ' ll cherish To guide us till our sun has set. 1 ' ' i iiwm i mri i fiiiiiiiiiiii i iiii i i H M fflm BiBii! ADMINISTRATION SSI p Our PRESIDENT And We are living in the most strenuous period in American history. There has not heen a time since the founding of the Republic when the college graduate faced such tremendous obligations and opportunities. Conditions call for courage and intelligent action. In your years in Brevard College you have had occasion to be courageous and intelligent. It is now time for these qualities to become habitual. It is difficult to predict just what your experience of the next several years will be. We sincerely re- quest you to keep in mind the lessons you have learned in college, and thus the col- lege will live in you. Our best wishes will follow you — whether you become warriors on the field of battle or keepers of the home fires here in your native land. Eugene J. Coltrane, President of the College DR. E. To realize this aim a greater variety of sports was offered at Brevard College than ever before. Intramural activities in particular were emphasized, together with the usual number of inter-collegiate games. Practical application of the rules of health was also stressed. Although football was dropped from the list of activities this year, a team formed bv the boys was highly successful both in its intramural schedule and the few inter-collegiate games which were played. In basketball, the most strongly emphasized sport of the year, an intramural tournament was conducted, in which the entire student body was divided into counselling groups, each with an organized team. After several weeks of playing, the elimination games were held. The champion- ship was taken by Mr. Trowbridge ' s group, which went the entire season without a defeat. An all-star team, chosen on the basis of playing and sportsmanship, defeated the champions in a game held after the Athletics Banquet. Also offered this year have been baseball, track, tennis, archery, horseshoes, ping-pong, and bowling. The far-reaching influence of the war was shown in a series of drills in military march- ing given in physical education classes. This year has been a very successful one from the standpoint of athletics. There has been a revived interest on the part of all students, an almost continuous program of activities, greatly improved sportsmanship, and a strong college spirit. fl — anaaiiMimm ■ji SH a i u ' IIK i iw iii m SCENES ON GRIDRON ! ■t wammMmmmmmm ,. -.mmmmmm mmmm ,. The major sport featured this year was basketball, which included a series of intramural games, composed of all the counselling groups of the college, and a varsity team. The Craig-Gaither team were the intramural winners but were beaten by the All-Stars, a group of players selected from the student body at large. The intramural winners were presented a trophy by Mr. Carl Gross of Carlton ' s Jewelry Store. The individual awards, small basketballs, were given by the Transylvania Times. The varsity team played four off-campus games. Other sports were speedball, Softball, track, tennis, archery, horseshoes, ping- pong, bowling, and tumbling. During the summer semester students are given free tickets to the Brevard Municipal Swimming Pool. Such participation has contributed greatly to the health and enjoyment of the students and has developed good sportsmanship and a fine college spirit.
