FOREWORD BREVARD COLLEGE is situated in a section of America that is particularly rich in folk- lore. This folklore gives us, as nothing else can, the lives of the people to whom it belongs. During the past four years the mem- bers of the Folklore Club and freshman English classes have made a collection of this material. None of this folklore has been secured from written sources, but has been handed down to us by the older inhabitants, both educated and uneducated, of the communities from which our students are drawn. To-day we know that education can free us from ignorance, superstition, and fear. As we discard the primitive ideas expressed in this folklore, we do not want to lose its higher quali- ties. We wish to retain the rich and pungent flavor of the ballads, folk-songs, singing games, folk-sayings, and superstitions that lend color to the mountain regions. It is for such a reason that we chose Moun- tain Folklore for the theme of this year ' s PERTELOTE and illustrate the annual with draw- ings that the theme suggests. —THE EDITOR. 36590
