L oltrane: { whose pre si stent faith in vSrevara College has been equalled only ou tli id etr courageous and ever increasing devotion to ner welfare. ' ore won j IN this, the fourth edition of the PERTELOTE, we have ( made an effort to portray the relationship between campus _y life and the ideas presented in the Nonne Preestes Tale. Chaucer ' s old tale provided a source from which the name of our annual was derived. Pertelote was the wise hen most admired by the gallant Chanticleer. In order to suggest our relationship to Duke University, whose annual is entitled CHANTICLEER, we chose PERTELOTE as the name of our pub- lication. Drawing still further on the Nonne Preestes Tale, we emphasized the idea that dremes ben significaciouns. From the time Brevard College came into existence it has been the embodiment of dreams; and its future depends largely upon the courage, intelligence, and sacrifice of those who are now striv- ing to make these dreams come true. May we, the Student Body of 1938, fulfill dreams that will reveal the Christian ideals and principles of sound scholarship that Brevard College has instilled in us. —THE EDITOR. 2(2)589 ©1)0 Qlnibg? ,0 fUJ yf . Nor for one moment will forget. Thy standards in our hearts we ' ll cherish To guide us till our sun has set. — Leighton Presson t o the L tc a66 edSaae of 1938 -OREVARD COLLEGE is in the hands of its friends. Its future I will be determined by their loyalty to the principles on which it was founded. The students who are here now, as well as those who have been here in previous years, are the ones who are most familiar with the situation and the problems it presents. They can do more than any other group to interpret the college to prospective students and to potential financial supporters. We must have choice students and loyal friends who are willing to give of their substance to the development of the kind of institution of which we dream. I most urgently request the same loyal devotion that has been so characteristic of our students from the beginning. We will not fail. EUGENE J. COLTRANE President of the College S £ xzuaxc { C. H. [52] 1  ife s AUtlrttra 7 can not love a coward, by my feith. —Chaucer. ti elics a t re van i I. RANSON Coach Jhe Joimado Ordeal To the athletes and to the young men and women of Brevard College who, already suspecting there is a more serious side of life, are still as keen as ever for the pleasurable excitement afforded by competitive sports, it would be impos- sible to deal with the subject of play without some comment upon the ethics of play. To every athletic director has come the high privilege of knowing young men and women who have, on the athletic field of school and college, found not only inestimable enjoyment in the game itself, but the value of such character traits as self-discipline. This trait of character compels one to play the game fairly. Nothing is more important than that. Not only does the sport go out of the contest, but the chances of winning grow less when any other method is employed. The only victory worth winning is the one that leaves no scar. Make the rules strict, live up to them, and there will be no regret. Certainly play to win, but not at any cost. It is just as noble to be a good loser, maybe more noble. It isn ' t so much the victory or defeat that counts, but how we play the game. Athletics should teach unselfishness. The narrow, self-centered idea should be forgotten and with it all that Is small and contemptible. Growth of the body comes from out-of-door exercise, fresh air, and sunshine; and with it should come growth of the mind in the sense of enabling us to take the longer view and affording us the wider horizon. — A. From a group of small, young, and inexperienced gridders Coach Ranson produced one of the best football teams ever to represent Brevard. In the opening campaign the Tornado defeated the Little Terriers of Wofford College. In the second game of the season Brevard lost to a powerful Wingate eleven in a game that was replete with penalties and passes. In the following contest Brevard fought a powerful and favored Boiling Springs eleven to a scoreless tie. On Homecoming Day Coach Ranson ' s Tornado drubbed a highly- touted Campbell eleven by the score of 18-0. Brevard ' s worst defeat of the season was its loss to the powerful Belmont- Abbey Crusaders. Undaunted by their defeat by the Crusaders, the Tornado turned back a light but fighting P. J. C. eleven on November 5. The following week in a flurry of snow Brevard lost tc a smooth clicking Lees-McRae eleven. On Thanksgiving Day the Tornado fought a brilliant scoreless tie with the highly favored Mars Hill Lions before the largest crowd of the season. [57] C-c-Urt j , a ins SPEAS KIGER t Sadhetbalt Jke vSadkeWall J e eadon Speas, Cauble, and Kiger were the only three lettermen who returned to the Brevard Quint; but there was a large turn-out, as usual. The Tornado got off with a slow start, but before the season was over Coach Ranson had a fast- passing team. Faced with many difficulties and also with one of the toughest schedules in the history of the College, the Tornado ' s record was not as impressive as usual. Although Coach Ranson had a small team, it made fine showings even against some senior college freshman teams. The quint which saw action most of the season was composed of Cauble, Kiger, Hendrix, Speas, and Taggart. Although thi s team did not win all of its games, it was noted for its fighting spirit and excellent floor-work. Hendrix, Speas, Kiger, Cauble, Taggart, Benson, Williams, Edwards, Young, and Stentz were awarded letters for their playing. With prospects of a new gymnasium and the return of five lettermen, the Brevard Cagers should go far in the Conference next year. [58] Jke 1 93 8 Sacked u te Jan. Jan. Feb. Feb. Feb. Feb. Coach Arthur Ranson called the first practice the second Tuesday in April, and twenty-five candi- dates reported. Pitching seems to be Coach Ranson ' s biggest worry; but he has been able to develop three starting pitchers— Porter, Taggart, and Williams. The Brevard town team will meet the College nine before the team starts its Junior College playing campaign with Textile at Spartanburg on April 23. Brevard College was runner-up last year in the Junior College baseball race, with Presbyterian College capturing the title. With four lettermen returning and a string of hopefuls, it is believed that Coach Ranson will have another winning nine this season. Frank Cauble and Revis Frye are outstanding play- ers for Brevard. Frye held down the hot corner in the games played by the Tornado last season. Cauble was the leading fielder and hitter of the club. Royal, a freshman, is also showing up well in the infield. From all appearances Brevard will have another successful season. Take the three all important matters of cooking, refrigeration and water heating for instance. With all its advantages of coolness, convenience, the saving of time and labor, and other advantages, electric cookery costs no more than the old fashioned ways. And electric refrigeration actually costs less— much less. Automatic elec- tric hot water service is economical also — almost beyond belief. The cost of electric service has had a constant trend downward since the power industry came into being. . . . The cost of living has substantially increased during the past three years; the cost of electric service has continued to decrease.
