Watching the super quiz competition with Roslynn Pryor, Wade Mayhue, and Jon Schooler at the Academic Decathlon. Mrs. Thorpe and her favorite subject! Judy Thorpe You are an example to us all. You are the one who completes the very Element of the 1989 Warrior. Your discipline and organization have played a key role in every one of our years here at Brethren. One never fully takes advantage of an excellent opportunity until it is offered no longer or it leaves. Your standards of excellence made each of us reach deeper within ourselves than we ever had before. Because of your high expectations many of us have accomplished more than we ever dreamed. You are one of the most respected teachers at Brethren. Your dedication to Brethren and all the students is apparent in your extra-curricular activities. You have helped begin and organize the highly prestigious Academic Decathlon here at Brethren. Your com- mitment to California Scholarship Federation and Lions ' Club Speech Meet have been of great benefit. Thank you so much for all these involvements and your dedication to Brethren despite the many miles of driving each day. We are extremely honored to present the 1989 Warrior to Mrs. Judy Thorpe who has brought us her own Elements of Style. 7 Young Koo ASB PRESIDENT As my days at Brethren grow shorter and graduation approaches, many thoughts go through my mind: uncertainty of the future, mistakes I made, leaving my friends and parting from Brethren. My mixed emotions are making me realize the im- portance of friendship and how beneficial past experiences can be. Through the years, I have noticed a great deal of changes happening daily. I see my classmates mature and the school improve. I have learned a lot about life from Brethren. We have all grown in our spiritual walk and I thank God for giving me the chance to serve Him. I also thank each one of you for your friendship and support this year. I will cherish the memories I have of you forever. Yours truly. Young Koo A.S.B. President Wade Mayhue ASB VICE PRESIDENT A year has ended at Brethren High School, but a chapter has ended in the lives of the seniors who are graduating. As we now go out into a larger arena of education and experience, we will all face new challenges and new obstacles and succeed in our pursuits. So to the graduating class of 1989, I wish the best of lucl and offer the sincere hope that you will stay close to God. To all those returning next year, please consider these thoughts. Develop a personal style and personal standards; don ' t be conformed to the standards that this world offers — they lead only to destruction. Follow God ' s path and strive for excellence to please Him. Sincerely, Wade Mayhue A.S.B. Vice President X 1 0 10 eKion As graduation apfJroaches, Seniors can look back on the different Elements that made life at Brethren unforgettable. We ' ll always remember Senior parties, the car rally, and our last Jr. Sr. Senioritis is spreading as the Class of 1989 prepares to take what we have learned at Brethren and use it to meet the challenges life has to offer. ■). 11 ■■■;«.•«■■Driving in yle • Driving in Style • Driving in Style • ▼ DRIVING IN STYLE - There ' s no doubt a car plays an i H ! D S 35 T : etioiiUed, For some students 2:35 signifies the end of the day, a time to go home, put your feet up, and relax. But to the estimated 85% of our school ' s populiation the day has just begun. Activities play an important part in high school life. Many long hours after school are spent in sports, cheer, clubs, music and student government. Dedication and responsibility are stressed by both coaches and advisors. So whether it ' s kickin ' back at the basketball game or getting ready for the Winter Formal, activities add an exciting Element to the Style of Brethren. 37 ' T m Homecoming ' 88 truly was A Royal Evening. Many have often wondered what it might be like to be a member of the Royal Family. This year ' s Royal princesses ex- perienced the Royal treatment. This year ' s court consisted of seven beautiful ladies. Each was chosen by our student body for her beautiful inner qualities. Our underclassmen princesses, Junior Krystal West, Sophomore Kristi Lanning, and Freshman Jennifer Schooler represented their classes beautifully. The four senior prin- cesses, Judy Burnside, Kim Stanfield, Angel Hurley, and Lisa Andrews, all looking beautiful, anxiously awaited the crowning of the Royal Queen. To set the tone for this Royal Evening each princess was driv- en on to Dyer Field in a horse drawn carriage. She was escorted by her father and then by her class representative. The ' 88 Home- coming Court awaited the Coro- nation under a magnificent arch of burgandy and silver balloons. Band members and cheerleaders holding balloons flanked the plat- form in honor of the queen. And then . . . drum roll . . . Brethren High School ' s 1988 — 1989 Homecoming Queen . . . With excitement mounting for the grand coronation, students showed their school spirit while anticipating the climax to this royal week. Surfers were looking for their favorite wave at Sunset or the Cliffs. Some went Roman in togas on a cold, windy day and found that it was not for them. Dodgers, Rams, and Lakers Fans turned out in mass. YES! This cheer brought our Varsity cheer squad to region- al competition in Oc- tober. The ' 88 squad consisting of two seni- ors, five juniors, and three sophomores is a united group. They each contribute to the special Element of the squad with their own individual Style. Cap- tain Jennifer Munneke said, The closeness within the squad seemed to make eve- rything fk w together with ease. This year ' s cheerleaders showed dedication through the long football and bas- ketball seasons. Co- Captain Micole DiLeva said, Even though practice was hard, working together made it a lot more fun. When asked to comment on the 88 squad, cheer advisor Susie Lasiter said, Given the few hours we have together to practice, plus outside involvements, it is ob- vious that the girls are dedicated and commit- ted to working hard in order that they may become better every year. Sophomores: Tricia Thomas, Becky Shaver, Kristi Lanning. Seniors (upper): Captain Jennifer Munneke, Co-Captain Nicole DiLeva. Juniors (lower): Krystal West, Stacy Chris- tensen, Margie Kirkwood, Heidi Aschenbren- ner, Lisa Hunter. 46 47 Varsity Flag added to the spir- ited Element with their own unique Style. First year captain Judy Burn- side felt right at home with her new friends. She said, The whole squad worked hard and had a lot of fun. This year ' s squad enjoyed perform- ing at halftimes and pep assem- blies. Through dil- igent work at prac- tice the squad was prepared with pol- ished choreogra- phy for showtime. Anticipating their first regional com- petition, the ' 88 squad continued to practice through basketball season preparing for their January competi- tion. Flag advisor Mardi Gadaire said, Even though this is the girls ' first year on Varsity, they have done ex- ceptionally well. I enjoy them very much and they ' re great to work with. Kathy Ba- calan, Paige Yerxa, and Vangi Edmundson, all three time letters, could predict each other ' s moves and worked together with experience. Contributing with her ace setting, Se- nior Kathy Bacalan made it possible for her outside hit- ter Paige Yerxa and middle hitter Vangi Edmundson to per- form. Considering no points would accumulate with- out a serve, ace erver Nisha Matthews was a great asset. The entire team con- tributed in back row passing and made a name for themselves with their scrappy play — nothing touched the ground. This year ' s inexpe- rience will prove to be a plus for great potential in upcoming years. ■R 83 84 The Varsity boys ' team was once again strong this year. Witti on- ly two returning players, Gavin Edmundson and Todd Mitchell, newcomer Doug Qrove was a key addition to the team . Playing many tight and overtime games, the team did well in pre-season and in league. The team was especially strong in 3 pointers. As a team the boys were consistent in the number of 3 pointers made per game . Against Whittier, they made all 3 point shots. The 3 point shooters were Chris Beck, Todd Mitchell, and Paul Namestka. With the outside shooting of Nisha Matthews, inside shooting of Leshette Molette, and rebounding of La Tisha Green, and team had a fair season. To help to achieve this goal, the team gained a new coach, Steve W e i g h t m a n . With great effort and practices the team gave their best in every game. The two seni- ors, Kevin Mays and Chris Neil- sen were the key players of the team because of their experience on the field. Despite our record, the team always carried a winning. Christtike attitude. This attitude was not an overnight miracle, but a process that took pa- tience, tears and a lot of laughter. One of the highlights of our season was the last game of the season when we brxjtaully fought Santa Margarita in the mudBowl. The core of our team started off slow, but grew very radically. Everyone on the team played with their best efforts. Superb athletic efforts throughout the season, as well as our team commitment to Christ, allowed us to grow through thick and thin giving us a peace about ourselves and our season that Surpassed all understand- ing. Spencer K. Johnston 95 97 The Varsity Baseball Team has started well. In the beginning of the season, the team had two starters out witR injuries, one of the team ' s pitchers, Tim Tangiin. and short- stop Troy Judd. This set the team back , ttle but they worked harder than neces- sary to make the best of the situa- tion. Half of the team already has the varsity baseball ex- perience which will help the team as the season progresses. The team has several Seniors who work together well as a team with the un- derclassMen. All around they are strong, especially pitch- ers Linda Darnell and Kim Stanfield. Several of the girls are return- ing varsity play- ers with quite a number of new members. First and foremost, 1 admire its dedicated and committed faculty and staff. Brethren has teachers and staff members who have sacrificed to work here and be used by God to impact the lives of young people. They have given much in the way of their time, talents, energy and finances to serve our school and I am grateful for them. Secondly, the long-standing tradition of Brethren High School and unyielding commitment to Christian edu- cation in the Greater Long Beach area over the past 40 years is equally impressive. Its 4100 alumni, many of whom are working full-time in a Christian ministry, are scattered throughout the world and represent a testimony to the greatness of our God through our school. And finally, 1 have enjoyed the students from the first time I met them in Chapel in May 1988. It was their big smiles — the joy I saw on their faces that communicated the pride and happiness they had in their hearts for their God and their school. I love the students. It is my goal and desire that each one of us who belongs to the family at Brethren serve our Lord and Savior by working hard as unto the Lord to make it an even better place to be. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it. Mr. Luketic Brethren is a school dedicated to serving the Master. My goal is to be certain 1 share tr at dedication in my own life and to strengthen this institution ' s commitment as we touch the lives of others. If I can have even a small part in encouraging young people, families, alumni or anyone touched by this ministry, to serve the Master, 1 will feel successful as a superintendent. We will be a successful school if we focus on service for Him. Mr. Brown The Psalmist tells us in Psalm 61;5 . . . thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. 1 believe Brethren has been given a Godly Heritage and has im- pacted many lives for Christ over these forty-some years. My purpose and goal for coming to Brethren would be to continue to uphold a Biblical standard for a Christ- centered education and encourage faculty members to influence students for Christ and eternity. Jesus, himself, teaches us in Luke 6:4 a student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. (N. 1. V.) Mr. Grove Each year we have one major goal at Brethren Jr. and Sr. High School. That goal is that our students, may with our help, mature to be the Christian young person God wants them to be. The maturing hopefully takes place, first spiritually, second socially and emotionally, and thirdly academically. All areas of our school life should focus around Jesus Christ and His desires for our in- dividual lives. It is my prayer that each student at Brethren please the Lord in his life. I have been greatly blessed by the privilege of working at Brethren. Being on the Warrior staff for four years has enabled me to help compile these memories onto pages to be kept and re- membered for years to come. As Graduation approaches, and we as seniors prepare to leave, remember to stay close to God always. With Him as our light, we will never stray from his path. ¥■believe our senior class has grown closer these past four years and I pray that God will keep us close in heart and help us to remernjber the Christian values and lessons we have learned from Bretht ' fen. Underclassmen, may you enjoy your last years here at Brethren building memories of your own. ♦ I want to personally thank the members of this year ' s annual staff. Especially the dedicated ones who stayed after school arid yj put in many long hours of extra work. In addition, I want to thaf k three people who took on more than their share of the Jyork and whose help was a key factor in bringing this book to publication: Mike Qaede, our photo editor, for his incredible patience hi ] taking and retaking pictures for the yearbook, LaTisha Green, for her sense of responsibility in taking on extra work, and Vangi Edmundson, for h creativity and willingness to spend extra hours aft school and even weekends doing nothing but annual. V ngi, I vi sh you the best of luck next year as editor. I would also x like to thank Mrs. Dunn for her overwhelming dedication and patttoce. Special thanks to my mom, dad, and Jennifer for their iL., Kmi love and support even under the tough- est deadlines.
