Every complaint, every compliment, every criticism . . . all return to you. No unit, no campus, no community can be better - or worse - than those who give it form. We are strangers thrown together - working laughing fighting crying loving - yes, loving growing together into a family. Each individual is a vital part of this family - sharing, discovering, cherishing that which is best within and around them recognizing, accepting, correcting that which is worst. This family -this Brescia - will continue to grow, to change, to mature. It must not stagnate. You alone give it life. You alone determine its present - its future. Dr. Sneller - English Department Q 1 J ff' ,WX ,iz Ma-E 1-95.55 A , if Man is by nature an explorer, a seeker. It is a timeless pursuit which has survived the ages. Some search for stability security tranquility and peace seeing their goal as the absence of turmoil - or -- the emergence of a freer opportunity for growth. Others seek new dimensions boundless seas topless mountains and ever widening horizons in the pell mell quest for self glory - or - in the painstaking labor of exploration and research. For the good or ill of man, the difference is not what is sought, but how and why. The burden of the search and its final result must always return to the individual -to you. K wbku ,A in--A M x . w-,MSW iffy ,I- NS-f ... Sister Joan Marie Lechner could be called a precedent- setting president. She is certainly one of the few college presidents who began her term of office as a window washer. Before Sr. Joan Marie, Brescia had never had a president and there was no job description, she was forced to improvise. No one had told her she was to deliver a welcoming speecn to the Freshman class and while the freshmen were waiting for the president to appear, she was out washing windows. That she was able to leave her brush and pail, deliver the address, and then finish washing windows is indicative of the persistence with which she has accomplished her other presidential duties. From washing windows Sr. Joan Marie turned to building dedications, fund raising, recruiting an expanded board of trustees, and directing the continued physical and spiritual growth of the Brescia College community. Her last fling comes this year when Brescia College presents an honorary degree to Eunice Shriver, the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Brescia College - an event which Sr. Joan Marie has long desired. Growth, faith, problems, humor, people - all these elements characterized the fourteen years of Sr. Joan Marie's presidency. Faith, humor and people are paramount in her memories. From the first years of her term, Sr. Joan Marie has always tried to maintain an open door policy toward all members of the campus community. She credited her ability to overcome difficulties and to achieve successes to God's goodness and the supportive people who have consistently been around her. 98 milestones Every administrator, every executive, every president remembers people, events, and successes which have highlighted their terms of office. Sr. Joan Marie is no different. Visual reminders of President Joan Marie are manyg during the first year of her term she dedicated the Merici Hall Chapel complex. ln 1964, with the help of Sr. Joan Marie and the newly formed Board of Trustees, Brescia College raised over S500,000 from the Owensboro community, this money was to provide the necessary impetus for the construction of the Science Complex by 1968. Her building years were not over, and in 1970 Sr. Joan Marie dedicated the annex to the Administration Building. The first faculty academic procession d - con ucted in the dark - is well remembered. ln 1964, for the first time ever, the entire Brescia faculty appeared at the commencem t f en exercises in full academic regalia. ln the middle o a thunderstorm, they followed Sr. Joan Marie into the Sportscenter - and the lights went out. The graduating class was still outside and faculty was on stage in total darkness. Four cars drove into the Sportscenter and turned on their headlights. Commencement exercises continued on schedule and Sr. Joan Marie held the flashli ht t help announce the graduating seniors Forth f g o . e irst and last time in Brescia's history, the commencement speaker spoke without notes or interruption. Perhaps the highest obligation of Sr Joan M ' ' . arse s presidency was her responsibility to the founding principals of Brescia College. To cherish and uphold Brescia's philosophy - the ' ' ' revelat' - ' search for truth in the light of Christian ion is the hardest and most rewarding facet of her job. She hopes that the members of Brescia's community will continue to meet the w ld ' or in th light of our philosophy and make it a better place for having been a part of Brescia. -...J I fe, -. .,,.A A 4. Today, the value of the campus has increased by more than four million dollars, the student body is gradually approaching one thousand and the budget is over Sl,OO0,000. Change? Yes rapid change. This rapid change will be the hallmark of the future and, I trust, con- tinued growth will be the hallmark of Brescia College. ' As I reflect upon the students of Brescia, I find the same seriousness of purpose, the same sense of belonging and the same spirit of cooperation as in the past. The in- scription on the gift you gave me, Much love and many thanks is a message I shall always cherish because it speaks so well the kind of relationship we have always tried to maintain. Brescia still pursues the values inherent in a liberal education which should re- sult in the development of a unique human person with a strong Christian sense of responsibility to all of reality which certainly includes a deep sense of the dignity of the human person. Father I-Iesburgh of Notre Dame University declares that unless a Christian college conveys this sense of respect for the person it has failed in its mission. If we, you and I, look at all the crimes committed against PERSON in our world today, euthanasia, abortion, napalmed Vietnamese, deaths due to violence, hunger, etc., we have to ask the honest question: Why has so much Christian education gone astray? What has happened to the respect for life and the dignity of person we talk so much about? Are we as Christian educators and students paying only lip service to the words of our philosophy which calls for Christian living and Christian responsibility to neighbor? These are questions difficult to answer. If we are serious about the search for truth and our pursuit of understanding, we have to face the challenge which they pose else we are being untrue to our real selves and we are hiding the life we were given to share. There is no pat answer, each of us must find it for himself. There is a need to examine one's values, to have some awareness of one's self-identity. This takes time, it takes prayer, it takes self revelation. I would suggest that you find time, on a regular basis, to be alone, to find your center where you will discover the person you really are. It is only in solitude that inner freedom grows and that power is given usg that we slowly unmask the illusion of our possessiveness and discover that being is more important than having. Life is not a possession to be defended but a gift to be shared. Jesus went to a lonely place to pray -- to grow in the awareness that all the power he had, the words he spoke, and the works he performed came from his Father. Through his aloneness with the Father in prayer he gave us a set of values which ,in a simple yet profound manner point out to us the Way, the Truth and the Life which not only lead to the Father but enable us to reach out to our brothers and take them with us. This Way is that of the beatitudes, Blessed are the poor, the meek, the pure of heart -- you know the rest. There is the promise of the Kingdom to those who live them. My prayer for you is that you reach the Kingdom and that I may meet you there. God bless you. Devotedly, gm ' 104 Six QL.- 1 'fl . as wr Sr. Mary Diar1e,Art Sr. Lennora, Education Sr. Vwran Mane. We have done our best to compose for you a book of photographic memories. You'll find scenes that recall the trials, fun, effort, and pain of being a college student in the year 1974. The memories that we have recorded on paper are, we hope, your memories, because this is Q book. mm emma.
