Text from Pages 1 - 76 of the 1956 volume:

Presented by: RUTH OWENS - Pino WWtam, W On the pages of this book is written the story of one of the happiest years of our lives. Like a circus parade, we have moved from a gay event to the more serious side of classwork, and back again to the ever pre¬ sent job of becoming what we would choose to be in the future. The Flash Staff of 1956 has recorded the events of this school session as a Circus Parade, winding its halting way through the halls of Brentsville District High School. We trust that our readers will find within the covers of our book of memoriesall the joy, pride, ambition; yes, even disappointment, and sometimes sorrow of our high school years. The bands play, the clowns caper, the marshalls keep order, and the parade moves on for the twenty-sixth year. They have guided our lives in the paths of unselfish service, wisdom, and virtue. Worthy membership in a progressive society has been their goal for us. As a means of showing our appreciation for their hard work and unselfish devotion, we dedicate to each and everyone of our individual parents, to Mr. P.B. Reading, Mr. Francis Daly, Mrs. Marie Reading, and Miss Hattie Mae Partlow, the Flash of 1956. We are extremely grateful for their encour¬ agement and enthusiasm at the times when our spirits were low. They have helped to make our work en¬ joyable, and we trust that this volume will be a reminder of our gratitude to them. PARENTS Onward, onward, ever faithful True and loyal be Like the mighty Bull Run Mountains, Ever proud of thee. As we tread her ivy portals. Truth and faith arise. We will lift our faces gently Upward to the skies. Oca ScjAooC UmxTHaten Hail to thee, our Nokesville High School, Loyal, brave, and true. We will sing our Alma Mater And lift our hearts to you. PASTORAL JOYS What is more wonderful than a rural community? The fields are a beautiful green in Springtime, A golden yellow thru the summer months, Then Harvest time—when Mother Nature Is getting ready for a much needed rest After all the labors of a busy season. Truly God ' s beauty is everywhere, but— Out here where the air blows sweet and fresh Our children run and play and enjoy— A puppy, a Kitten, a pet lamb, a baby pig, or a calf to raise as their very own. On beautiful farms such as the one pictured here. These things along with our churches and schools Make us realize how great God really is! _ Out (siCMWUMvuty 1 f vu. u. L.. We at B. D. H. S, are very grateful to the two Eddies. Occi r The students at B. D. H. S, are indeed lucky to have competent drivers transporting them daily to and from school. A,, and the Ath¬ letic Association. He was interested in music, and his bass voice could be heard in both Glee Club and the Choir. Asdrum major he directed the line of march. In 1955, he represented the local F. F. A. Chapter at the National Convention in Kansas City. As a lead¬ er or a ' follower, Arthur was always reliable. BETTY ANN RANDALL Valedictorian, Betty Randall, had a variety of interests. She served as editor of the school paper and editor of the FLASH. She played varsity bas¬ ketball for two years, participated in class plays, and served as secretary to the Student Council. In 1955, she represented her school at the State Convention. She was elected each year to the May Court by her class¬ mates. Attractive, gracious, and charming, Betty was considered most likely to succeed. DANNY ALDEN NEWLAND Salutatorian of the class of 1956, Danny attended All State Band, and served as business manager for the lo¬ cal band. He was particularly inter¬ ested in sports and participated in the State Track Meet. In addition to sports, band, and his academic class¬ es, he was interested in school pub¬ lications and dramatics. Studious, industrious, and modest, he was well liked by the students and faculty. DELL ROBERT LUNSFORD Bobby served two terms as presi¬ dent of the Student Council and was most outstanding in athletic events. He represented his school at the state S. C. A. Convention, and at the State Work Shop. As an active member of the F.F. A., he participated on judg¬ ing teams and in the sports activities of that organization. Bobby was al¬ ways good natured, courteous, and considerate of others. ANNIE LILLIAN SMITH Lillian could best be represented as a helping hand. No job was too big nor too trivial when there was a need for service. She enjoyed her commercial work, band, glee club and school sports. For two years she represented her school in the County Federation of S. C. A. S. She had supporting roles in both class plays and worked untiringly on the school publications. Her classmates consid¬ ered her the most studious girl. SHIRLEY WALTINE COLLIER A cheerful, efficient, go-get¬ ter, Waltine represented her school at Girls ' State and at the F. H. A. State Convention. She was president of the local F. H. A. Club, active in sports, and most persuasive in securing ads for the FLASH. She enjoyed dramat¬ ics, sang in the Glee Club, and liked creative writing. By student vote, she was acclaimed most popular senior girl.
