But these iust scratch the surface of the real purpose of our classes - to prepare us for our future lives, both educationally and professionally. As a result of the significance of its importance, we now throw the beam of 60's SPOTLIGHT ON ACADEMICS. THE '6O SPOTLIGHT SHINES Completing diagrams of sentences in junior English crass are Betty, Mary, and Wanda. The second-period Latin class watches Charlotte Craig point out famous sites in the ancient Roman world. Using a tape recorder in foreign language classes is a new experiment being put to test by the second-year Spanish class. Acting out a play in literature class, Bill drives an imaginary car and takes his family for a ride. Since the launching of the first satellite, the spotlight of education has focused on science and mathematics. More and more emphasis is being placed on these subiects in the race for scientific development. The principles and rules taught in these classes will enable us to more fully understand the ne- cessity for research in the scientific field. Along with this is the familiar quotation, Why can't Johnny read? Again we find public interest focusing on edu- cation - this time on English and foreign language. ln order to cope with and meet our everyday and scientific problems, we must be able to read, write, and comprehend them. Con- sequently we must have a good language background, both foreign and native. 14- ON STUDENT PARTICIPATION Pat Heckamczn demonstrates the slide rule to Dave and Steve. Byapplying what these courses have to after, we begin to develop the power of observation and learn to express ideas in design and form. Practical classroom experience not only prepares us for Lana Fisher expertly transfers a corner of the art toom onto her drawing board. the future, but also gives us an understanding of the indus- trial and commercial world. Making use of knowledge learned in these subiects gives us skill with our finaers and quickness in our thinking. Dick Balsley, like the rest of the mechanical drawing' class, saves time do- ing his lessons with the drafting machine. 17 PROJECTOR PROVIDES PLUS TO CLASSES Most of our classes have the benefit of films or slides to make them more educational and interesting V 0, 74? 'xg 1 Shown by the movie operators, this film gives the Ag class a view of better methods of farming Preparing for their future in agriculture are not only those interested in farming, but also boys interested in the care or repair of farm machinery, new and better methods of farm- ing, sale of equipment, machinery, or land, and materials handling. Besides getting a better knowledge of this subject, they also receive valuable, practical experience through such things as keeping books, buying and selling, planting and harvesting. All this and more is taught in the Ag classes in order to better prepare our boys for their vocational future. Farm shop boys practice useful techniques for future farm life 18 WE WCRK TO HUM OF MIXERS AND MACHINES Learning to care for the home, for personal needs, and for the needs of others are iust a few of the obiectives of the home economics course. Although many girls take this course to prepare for a vocational future, others take it to gain valuable practical experience for all walks of life. While in home economics, the'girls prepare for their tu- tures, in Industrial Arts the boys begin to prepare for theirs. Manual training is the theme of this department. During the year the boys not only work on wood projects, but also do metal work and drawing. ln these classes they learn to take the initiative and get their work done once it's started, Shop boys learn craftsmanship as they work on shop prolects. 19 The senior home economics class watches a food prepara- tion demonstration by Jeanette and Aloma. By operating the lathe, the shop boys can make varied and beautiful proiects. PANELS, PROJECTS, AND PHYS. Suspense builds up as Mr. Nierste hands back government leSlS. i l l Lana, one of our student librarians, assists Larry and Barb as they use the card catalogue tor research work. All heads are turned as the panel of experts answers questions in sociology. When we think ot social studies, we usually think of history, but in reality, this is only a part of social studies - included also are gov- ernment, economics, sociology, and geography. Teaching students to learn from past exper- iences is part of the iob of social sciences. ln addition, these courses must also help us to evaluate mistakes ot the past and link yesterday with today. In doing this, social studies begin to help us to a better understanding of other people besides ourselves. Helping us in this understanding are the li- brarians. Whether we are doing research work, or iust looking for a good book to relax with, we can tind both in the library. ED. IN ACTION SPGTLIGHT Mr. Bunge watches as Francis gives Oscar, the skeleton, the once- over in health class. ln order to keep the body sound and fit, we must learn how our body works and what makes it work. We do this in health and physical education. ln health, we learn that our body is a machine, and like all other machines it must have proper care. We also learn the organisms of our machine, and what we can do to keep them running. Exercise and what it can do for one can be called the theme of physical education. ln this class we learn to utilize exercise and various group games toward our goal of keeping our'body in shape. 21 Exercises, exercises, we must do our exercises. Watch it boys, l'm on the bottom! Cf 6166215 We look first to the seniors, eyes radiating the realization that soon they will be on their own, then the juniors, a touch of superiority in their faces, next the sophomores, with a new look of confidence, last the freshmen, feeling small and frightened - these have been our friends. As our spotlight of memories flashes over these past years, perhaps what we will remember most are the chats, arguments, and laughter we've shared with these friends, whom we now illuminate as we put our 60's SPOTLIGHT ON CLASSES. l N r rwk SPCTLIGHT IS FOCUSED DALE EBER ALLEN Football l,2,3,4, Basketball l,2,3,4, Track lg Band l,2,3, Student Council 2. FIRST GRADE U Jctzui tied Adding just the right touch of spice and glamour to school life are the activities in which we participate. Besides providing a creative out- let by allowing us to use our imaginations, to plan interesting meet- ings and exciting parties and dances, these organizations play a much larger role in school life. The careful work and planning done in these activities helps teach us co-operation, tact, poise, responsibility, dependability, leadership, and character. Because these functions have a prominent place in both our present and future lives, we now place our 60's SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITIES. X ENTHUSIASM AND RESPONSIBILITY As Carolyn signs the membership book, Barbara, Sonya, Judy, Jean- nette, and Marilyn Fisher, president of the Plymouth chapter, look on. Bremen High School has initiated a new organi- zation, the National Honor Society. After re- ceiving its charter in October, the first members were inducted in January. Membership is limited to iunior and senior students with a B average. Along with the scholarship qualifications, the students must also have outstanding character, leadership abilities, and active service. Members of the National Honor Society are preferred candidates for college scholarships and admission and carry through lite the respect for this club. Mrs. DeMoss, sponsor, along with Barbara, Dick, and Verdon share enthusiasm for the new Society. Chris and Jim discuss the emblem, while Lynn and Karen read over the program.
