SENIORS On a warm September afternoon in l938, twenty-four squirming little sea serpents wiggled into the brand new Bremen Aquarium. We were Rolland Aker, Paul Bailey, Marilyn Forsythe, Dave Bowser, Evelyn Boyer, Junior Elliott, Eugene Dutoi, Bill Frenger, Fred Haas, Willie Hochstetler, Glenice Jensen, Frank Jones, Nettie Keyser, Lowell Kuhn, Marlene Layman, Herb Leeper, Frank Roberts, Glen Scott, .lay Senff, Ted Swank, Tonia Tombaugh, .lim Unsicker, Windy Walterhouse, and Jack Zillmer. The next year Linc Wolfe ioined us. Our third year a few more wiggled in. Lucy Carrico and Shirley Muncy came from South Bend, and from the twin city, Mishawaka, came Bob Hall. Wakarusa gave us Dotti Heckaman. ln the fourth grade Barbara Ruger slipped in from Michigan, and Charlie Sult came from Grovertown in the fifth grade. Then during our sixth year Carolyn Aukerman arrived here from Laporte. Bob Myers came in the seventh grade and in the eighth grade we received another Mishawaka fish when Kenny Crowel swam into our midst. ln our first big splash at the Aquarium for Big Fish, in plunged Millie Weber, Martha Mutti, Louie Bollenbacher, and Phyl Thomas from the Lutheran School. Tom Smith dropped in from Elkhart later on that year. ln our tenth year Wayne Schlemmer lumped in from Madison and Mount Ayer tossed us Leonard Stichter. 7 After a fairly successful magazine sales campaign and a hectic Junior Play, Here Comes Charlie lHey, Uncle Aleclll, we had acquired a chestful of pirate's gold which was enough to finance the Prom. Kenny Crowel and Glenice Jensen were the official rulers of the Prom which was held in our own home port. Our Senior play Nothing But the Truth, was postponed several times so we poor fish are still in the dark about it. Several of us have worked hard trying to make this Sprig iust a little better. Now we are a big school of fish with 41 of us perched on our careers. 2 new .--.,,l,,, so - :,'::x: SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS, seated: Glenice Jensen, president, Dorothy Heckaman, treasurer. WHEN WE WERE .IUNIORS Kenny Crowel Glenice Jensen Although our Junior year wasn't as busy as our Senior year, we kept busy with the prom and the play. Our prom, which was held in the gym on May 6, l95O, revolved around a wishing well in the center of the gym and o small white picket fence separated the dance floor from the tables. The music was by the Top-Hats, an excellent orchestra from South Bend and Kenny and Glenice were elected by our class as king and queen. The play HERE COMES CHARLIE was a hilarious comedy with Kenny and Glenice playing the leading roles. Jay did a good iob as Uncle Alec with o hill billy accent and a boiled shirt. Junior, as Kenny's best friend, generally got himself into difficulties with Kenny's aunt, Eunice Neusus. Dot's brood, Ted and Martha, were about the snootiest of the lot until Ted fell in love with Glenice. Windy managed to find ci cop's uniform big enough for him and Moria had an lrish accent for weeks afterwards, but the play was a good one and everyone had a wonderful time presenting it. Miss Terwilliger directed the production. 21 i-.N 3 ann ,563 4-5- 415.5 -1 in 'R- In Flgf . n. 91-5 at ,, , '1- x I AXX xl 5 .H .IUNIORS Along with the other little fishes in Bremen High School, we have 5'I lobsters. We support Student Council by sending Chet Cardelino and Paula Smith as our representatives. There are twelve of our girls in G. A. A., eleven boys in F. F. A., and two librarians. We shine in music, too, because we have 24 in Band, 4 in Concert Choir, and 36 in Mixed Chorus. Our guardians are Miss Ruple, Mr. Clemens, and Mr. Thornberry. SPRIG 0' MINT .sprig O' Mint work progresses slowly, if at alll The editor, Dot, spent the best part of her senior year worrying, wondering, and warring. Kenny and Windy collected donations from generous businessmen and handled the sales. After Shirley and Frank had adver- tised our books, we all sold them to susceptible underclassmen. lOne soph even got twoll Miss Irion wrote innumerable letters and answered innumerable questions. Ted and Wayne drew so many fish they nearly learned to swim in the process. Link developed a chronic wink from taking so many pictures. Maria, lwho got stuck with whatever no one else wantedl Martha, and the rest of Mr. Replogle's 6th period study hall cut, pasted, and mounted pictures. Willie and Martha wrote stories for the classes while Jeanette collected data on the elementary grades. Somehow amid the stalling and conflicts of mid-year, Eugene, Bob, and Marlene wrote their stories and identified their groups for the activities in school. They finished lust in time, too, because another of the inevitable deadlines was staring us right in the face. Phyl dug up information about the basketball games and Scottie wrote the bit on baseball. Glenice and Junior concocted the most delightful poetry about seniors, arranged a poll to find out who's who in the senior class, and dedicated our most precious possessions to our various friends. The girls contributed gifts to make Thanksgiving boxes for the hospital and had a wonderful time carolling at Christmas. The band is always one of the first organizations to get started at the opening of a new term. Band interest is high because of their numerous activities, concerts, and contests. One of their foremost activities of the year was the Band Boosters Drive. The members went from house to house soliciting funds for the band. Several students were given an excellent opportunity when a merchant permitted them to work for him and to take the profits of the day for the band. The band participated in Indiana University's annual All High School Band Day in November. lt was a great experience for all of them and one which will be remembered. Contests start in late winter and continue into early spring. Rivalry is intense among the competing bands for the honor of having an A rating. Our band has consistently placed high in both district and state contests. Each year students are given awards which they have earned on the merit system. A special award will be given to Louise Haney this year in recognition of her outstanding performance. Marlene Layman and Verna Palmer have earned their 4-bar chevron, Jane Mayer, 3-bar chevron, Sue Swank and Janet Schmitt, T ' r evron, Lenore DeFauw, Berdine Heckaman, Nancy Keyser, Lowell Kuhn, Shirley Long, Rosemary Mutti, Marsha Robinson, and Jo Sherland, l-bar chevron. BASEBALL The fall baseball season opened with a bang as the team was in fine shape. Shortstop Jay Senff took over the pitching duties after Crowel hurt his foot. Jay had good support behind him by trouncing the Bourbon nine 8-6 in our first game of the season. ln Kenny's first game, he held the Lapaz boys to a one-hitter, but serious errors by everyone caused the final score to be l l -8. When Jay pitched the muddy game against Argos, the team was fighting for a chance at the Marshall County trophy. lt was a close game but Argos was defeated, 3-2. Moving to Culver, the pitching duties were again turned over to the hard-luck pitcher, Kenny. He again lost a well-pitched game on a one-hitter, the score was 5-4. That game ended our hopes for the trophy and the team finished the season by edging West High, 9-3. 65 W' I I I DAN SCHAFER I County Superintendent of Schools ERNEST ANNIS Township Trustee , xttb .
