After we got acquainted with one another and seats were assigned in the assembly, we elected our class officers: Dale Martin, president, Marvene Siefer, vice president, Kate Moore, sec- retary-treasurer. After a successful year we got over our green stage. At the beginning of the year we had forty-six classmates, but by the end of the year we had lost eight fellow students. Surviving all the hard examinations, thirty-eight classmates organized as sophomores. We had gained three new students and lost three of our freshmen classmates. With a little experience from our first year We again elected class oflicers. James Anderson was chosen to Lead us: Bill Minnes: as vice president, and Orville Kling as secretary-treasurer. Another successful year! We felt quite superior as juniors. The class was composed of forty students. We had gained two new classmates and lost none. Early in the year we elected our officers. Our president was Pat Petcherg John Snyder, vice president, Glennis Birkey, secretary, and Edward Kastner, treasurer. The presentation of our play, Here Comes Charlie, was a great accomplishment. The success of the junior-senior prom was a. happy ending for our junior year. Thirty-four junior classmates and fourteen new classmates re turned to the new school to graduate. After we had learned the new teachers, learned how to get around the building, and were final ly acquainted with our new classmates, we chose the following of ficers: president, Edward Kastnerg vice president, Marvene Siefer secretary, Marie Akerg treasurer, James Anderson. The publication of the Sprig O' Mint was a great production. The semor p1a.5 Spring Fever, was a great attainment and a huge success A great event in our lives as seniors was the senior trip. The Junior senior prom helped usher us on to our last day. With commence ment and baccalaureate we were ready to say goodbye to dear Bxe men high and to seek our places in the world. Library 'The students who have chosen library activity have played a very important part in the organization of the library in our new school. Those participating in this activity are given instruction and practice in the care and arrangement of books. nling, cataloging, and general library practices. The activity meets daily. 4-H Club Activity Girls, not necessarily 4-H club memhers, interested in Working on problems or projects related to home economics participate in this activity. Cooking, sewing, embroidering, and many other home making activities are included in their semes- ters' work. l l Boys, not necessarily those enrolled in county 4-H club work, but also those interested in farm life, its problems, and related projects, choose this activity. These boys participated in such activities as livestock judging, dairy judging, poultry judg- ing, grain judging, soil testing, and other activities related to life in a rural com- munity. Student ouncil Although organized only this year, the Student Council has sponsored many student activities During the basketball season, it found transportation for the students to out-of-town games. A high light was the All High School Party given by thc Council at the school for all students. The membership consists. of a repre- sentative from each room of the junior and senior high school, chosen by popular vote. Hi-Y Carrying on the tradition of service and good fellowship set by former groups, Hi-Y this year has attempted to develop the minds, bodies and Spirits of its mem- bers. Climaxing the year's program was the annual Father and Son Banquet at which J. K. Gorrell, editor of the Enquirer, was the speaker. Included among other activities of the year are helping with the dedication of the building and sponsoring a Christmas beneht show. Dedication of Gymnasium On November 1, 1939, the new gymnasium was ofhcially dedicated. The Waka- rusa Indians were invited to come over to help with the ceremony, but they proved to be not too gracious guests since thevy defeated the Lions, 24 to 8. Between the games County Superintendent of Schools, Deane E. Walker, pre- sided in a brief ceremony of dedication. He introduced members of the Board of Control of the Indiana High School Athletic Association: Arthur L. Trester, Coni- missionerg G. Warren Phillips, Presidentg John M. French, Council Representative, Fred W. Rankin. Mr. Trester spoke of the new gymnasium as a laboratory where boys and girls are made into men and women, where leadership and followship are developed, the one growing from the other. Approximately two thousand people witnessed the dedication ceremony. 6 Q XLWQUCJE A xx CCW Q 6 IIC, .S The Lions Second Team TOP ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT - Mr. H'. E. The team was composed of seven Seniors: Robert Schweisberger, Harold Wallace, Dale Keyser, John Snyder, Dale Martin, Mar- vin Miller, Bill Minnes fCaptain7g two Sophomores: Dale Sherk, Richard Deeper, and one Freshman, Noble Hand. The Lions opened their 39-40 season against a consistent Wakarusa team who sank baskets at all angles to defeat the Lions, 24-8. This game was the worst defeat of the year. Of the first eleven games played the Lions won, three: from Akron, Etna, Green, and Milford, they were defeated by Wakarusa, Madison, Nappanee, Syracuse, Culver, LaPaz, North Judson, and New Paris. The Lions opened the 1940 County Tourney held at Plymouth January 12-13 by defeating a scrappy Tyner five in a thrilling overtime game 28-26. In the next en- counter the Lions were overcome by a peppy Plymouth team, 44-36. The final game off the County Tourney was won by Bourbon who defeated a strong, but tired, La- Paz team. Starting the second half of the season the Bremen 'Cagers won four and lost five of their last nine scheduled games. The defeats were at the hands of: Argos, Knox, Plymouth, Culver, Washington of South Bend, the wins were from: Tipfpe- canoe, South Bend Catholic, Bourbon iCounty Champsl, and Argos. At the Sectional Basketball Tournament, also at Plymouth, the Lion netmen played the fifth game on Friday morning, March 1, and won from a highly favored Culver team by rallying in the fourth quarter and overcoming an eight-point lead to scalp the Indians, 32-30. This was the most brilliant game played by the Lions dur- ing the season. That evening the Lions were defeated .by the same peppy Plymouth team who eliminated them in the County Tourney. This game ended the 1939-40 Bremen basketball season. ' By defeating Bourboni, the County Champs, on their own door, 32-28, and win- ning over Argos in their last home game by a large margin, we believe the Lions have proved that the only thing lacking was the experience they failed to get the previous years. With three varsity stars and a good bunch of little scrubs, Bremen will have some outstanding teams in the future and to them we wish-GOOD LUCK! Baseball Team When not hampered by bad weather, members of the track and baseball teams did manage to get themselves a few points, along with their exercise and sunburn This year saw Bremen's first entry in inter-scholastic track competition. Bremen school musicians were host to tive visiting bands on Friday evening, April 12, when the playing organizations of the high schools of the county gathered here for their first annual Marshall County Band Festival. Each band played three numbers of its own choice: a march, a selection, and an overture. Several of the bands were conducted by student leaders. The motive of the festival was to create a friendly, conperative spirit among the school band leaders and student musicians of the county. Mr. T. A. Kleckner welcomed the visitors and County Superintendent Deane Walker introduced the band leaders from Argos, Bourbon, LaPaz, Plymouth, Tyner, and Bremen. A large and appreciative audience attended the festival. On the afternoon of May 1, the physical education department presented Old King Cole. Approximately 600 students participated in this program which includ- ed a great variety of activities such as stun.ts, folk dancing, tumbling, rope skipping, singing games, marching, etc. The school band furnished the music for the program and ceremony of the crowning of the Queen of the May. Old King Cole was directed by Miss Pound and Mr. Shively. Booster Page The staff of the Sfprig 10' Mint, realizing the limit in number of business and professional leaders who could support this publication by inserting high-priced ad- vertisements-which usually are not paying propositions for the advertiser anyway- has decided instead to give more of the business and professional men an opportun- ity to indicate their support of Bremen School by listing as BREMEN SCHOOL BOOSTERS each of them who helped to make this yearbook possible.
