In order to create that lasting impression, the activities must be interesting or exciting. Regular activities like weekend dances as well as education events like a German program, or folk fair can be just as memorable as a ski trip or a Good News Bears vs Coaches basketball game. Getting involved is the main part. Come to the activities. By being more involved yourself, you will more easily carry forth good memories that you can rely upon in your future. As Mr. McGraw (Administrative Assistant) says, I’m encouraged by the involvement and enthusiasm that students bring to the different activities. 7 Doctor Miller stunned as the Senior Class finally gets an answer right. Darlene’s And Dan’s Details Of D.C. My week in Washington D.C. can be stated in one word, UNFORGETTABLE. However, all my experiences would take pages to describe. From seminars, to tours, to freetime in the student lounge, the seven days in D.C. were fast paced and exhausting. I do not regret one moment of the action. The friendships I made and the many things I learned will be memories that will last a lifetime. Darlene Daggy Before I attended Presidential Classroom, I had no idea it would be so fast paced. Attending seminars, sightseeing, and listening to speakers took up most of the time, but in between all that I made new friends and met interesting people. I’m sure I'll never have a chance to attend anything like it again and I’m really glad I was able to. It was an end as well as a beginning. The culmination of all our efforts. The ceremony, which was simply a formality, brought with it great happiness as well as deep sorrow. We were joined together as a class for the final time. Our minds flooded with memories of what we now must consider the past. A time filled with laughs and tears, good times and bad, hard work and gracious rewards. Times we would not trade for the world. We made new friends while holding on to the old, always looking forward to the day. We are proud of what we have accomplished and are happy to share it with those teachers and special friends who have joined with us. Although we must leave Bremen High School and all it has to offer, we will always have, in our hearts, what we have learned and shared. We will build upon what we have experienced. We are ready for lifes challenges, we hope they are ready for us. Here we come! You’ve Come A Long Way Baby! GRADUATION 41 GRADUATION 43 ■ Organizations Add Enthusiasm To The Year! The Spanish Club is a good way to meet people and be introduced to a new culture. This club has participated in many events this year ranging from the Folk Fair in December to Spanish Day at Thornton Community College in April. We have been successful in candy sales, bake sales, and other fund raisers. We are also planning to send a club member to Mexico in the near future. The Echo The Echo, Bremen’s newspaper, produced newspapers throughout the year. For the first time, each Bremen student was entitled to a free newspaper because the district provided funds for publication. In competition this year, Dan Schuler won an award from Thornton Community College for his sports writing ability. The Echo Club consists of: Kim Gravakus, Kim Cole, Alicia Laas, Donna Gold, Dan Schular, Carrie Wilson, Denise Kozik, Angie Peters, Jeanine Centers, Tom Olson, Kathy Durkin, Lori Cherivithch, Kelly Konecki, Marcella White, Michelle Pizer, Erika Milhouse, Tom Kearn, Julie Brickly, Wendy White, and david Ewan. Previously known as the SWEP club, the members desided to modernize their name into the Bremen High School Work Program. This year’s new Work Program developed the members ability to organize and plan together as well as carry out projects. They were participants in the Homecoming events as well as the annual Employer Appreciation Banquet. Standing- Tina Crisman, Karin Scholten, Sue Bogusz, Mark Anderson, Kevin Zeug, Derrick McCall. Seated- Michelle Vanhorn, Lena Spicer, Ezella Barner. National Honor Society The National Honor Society of the 1985-86 school year has been very successful. All the members have been very helpful and supportive in this year's activities. The Christmas stuffed animal sale went extremely well. Also, beginning a tutoring program here at Bremen was a new idea that seemed to get everyone involved. Hopefully, this will now serve as a precedent to future N.H.S. clubs. One of the main goals of the N.H.S. is to help either the school or the community and this year’s N.H.S. did a good job in fulfilling that goal. Student Council Student Council appears to be involved in many things around school, yet the average student doesn't realize how much effort is put into this club. Besides Homecoming and Turnabout, Student Council members actively participate in the food and other drives that help our community. Besides the students helping at tag days for the local organizations, they collected food for the needy, toys for children, and donated to several local families in memory of their friends and to help others who were sick. Many Bremen students finished their year of helping people by joining in with HANDS ACROSS AMERICA. Although many joined the ranks on their own, here are the students who travelled to a small town south of Kankakee to help fill gaps in the farm country's line. As they held hands and sang songs, the feeling of belonging to a special event reached them all. This feeling continued as they made their tired way into town. HANDS ACROSS AMERICA Our Apologies To Girls’ Cross Country AMY GIGGLEMAN: It was fun and interesting ’cuz I was undefeated. I was disappointed to miss State by 4 places...but I’ll get it next year!!! KATHI PERIZZO: You get to go to a lot of places and sometimes stop at people’s houses when you run. BETH BEATY: It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.” BERNIE RZAB: It’s hard work and the competition’s tough, but it’s really fun. Our biggest problem is that very few people join.” JENNY TURNGREN: It was boring. All we did was RUN!!!!!” Due to disappearing pictures, which the staff was unable to duplicate, we had to resort to comments made by the team members about their season. 69 Girls Swim Towards A Successful Season! Girls soccer: Bottom: Julie Jarema, Chris Hotwagner, Eileen Durkin, Sue Bogusz. Top: Guyanne Lufrano, Sue Hammer, Mary Beth Conlan, Michelle Fagen, Tricia Durkin (absent). This year Bremen High School started a new activity, which is the girls soccer team. This team consists of nine girls who worked very hard. Although they did not have quite a full squad to participate in any games against any other schools, they still practiced hard and had a few scrub games among themselves. This year we can say it was a building season for these girls. Next year we hope to compete with a full team against other schools, and have a fun and enjoyable season! Boys soccer: bottom: Chris Schaefer, Dave Doyle, Ken Hartwig, Roger Stroud, Mark Hoffman, middle-Otis Smith, Brian Mohr, Rick Perzely, Otis Emerson, Darryn Dombrowski, Tim Dombrowski, Mike Kane. top: Tom Colvin, Bruce Barta, Rodney Beitler, Joe Ramos, Paco Casteneda, James Donald, Bill Doyle, Mr. Fleck. As with the girls, this was the first season for the boys soccer team. Since they had more boys who expressed an interest, they were able to accomplish a little more. Besides participating and competing against themselves, they were also able to play a few games against other schools since they had a larger squad than the girls. These games were considered non conference because, as this was our first year, we were still considered a club where as the other schools were official teams. This will change next year as we become an official team. Good Luck to the guys in their first year of real competition! NEW SPORTS 101 Activities That Create Lasting Memories Many of the teachers at Bremen had comments about this year and the various groups around the school. Here are a few: Mr. McGraw- I am encouraged by the activity and the enthusiasm that students bring to the different activities. Mr. Branch- If anyone had told me in 1970, that a Bremen group would be performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or even any orchestra, I would have laughed! Miss Berry- It was a pleasure to sponsor students who placed third out of almost 700 teams in this year’s Stock Market Experiment. BOARD OF EDUCATION: Seated- President Barbara Samuels, Secretary Paula Czupek, Standing- Donald Sebek, Dr. Robert Donaldson, Vice-President Mr. Richard Gronkowski, Mr. Donald Slattery, Not Pictured- Mrs. Eleanor Ferraro. Dr. William Sharp District 228 Central Administration District 228 relies upon a series of people to maintain control over the buildings and standards found throughout the four schools. The ultimate decisions are made by the elected board members. They meet each month to discuss ideas and see presentations made by different areas within our school district. Directly responsible to the board are the people who run the daily businesses of the district, Led by Superintendant Dr. William Sharp. These people are: Assistant Superintendant, Mr. Ronald Wade, Director of State and Federal Vocational Programs, Mr. Norman Polaskey, and finally, Superintendant of Building and Grounds, Mr. Linden Richard. 104 Mr. George Bieber Bremen High School Administration The internal workings of Bremen are handled by Principal George Bieber. Under him, Associate Principal Jim Miller and Administrative Assistant John Me Graw, control the classroom climate as well as the extra curricular activities. Combined with these men, the two Deans, Pat Gregory and Leon Newbern combine to keep the area of dicipline and attendance running smoothly. August Konie I liked the feeling of working together for common goals. The charities, food drives and local families all prospered because Bremen took the time to care. Kelly Konecki I enjoyed being part of the best varsity Football team Bremen has ever had. Danny Tijerina This year proved to be a very interesting and fun year for me. I know I will miss Bremen and always hold fond memories of my four years here. Jean Langland My last year at Bremen was the greatest of all four years. I learned a lot about life and its upsets. I will never forget my years at Bremen. Craig Vincek My last year here, at Bremen High School, has proven to be a memorable one, with a fine season on the football field as well as in the classroom. When I leave, I will remember Bremen by a few things, the fine teachers, the ever-so-nice Deans, and most of all, the student body. Track-2 Many of this year's underclassmen had pleasant and not so pleasant memories of their last year at Bremen High School. A few of them decided to share them with us: Bill Leavy-Freshman: I'll never forget the look on my brother, Mike's, face when he found out his locker had been egged. Everyone thought it was hilarious except for him. He swore he would never forgive Anne Wielgorecki and Julie Friend for doing that to him! Julie Grabowski-Freshman: I found that I really enjoyed all the sports that I had been involved with. I met new and interesting people that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to become friends with. Sports really made me happy especially when I was chosen for the 100% award for volleyball. I can’t wait to participate next year.” Mike Waichunas-Freshman: Spanish class was a blast! SenOr made the class with all his funny jokes and one liners. Juniors Junior Class Works Well Together I'm very proud to say that the class of ’87 is the best group of people this school has ever seen. The class acts to help the community have been great and I’m proud to be part of a group that gives up their free time to help others. Ed Feil 142 I am Proud to be a member of the class of 1987. During spirit week everyone worked well together and much was accomplished. This year we did not do as well as we expected, but neither did the Seniors, so next year we will be back to do even better. I'm glad all of us participated in the food drives for the needy, and we really are looking forward to our final year at Bremen.” Junior Class President, Dawn Chenoweth ”1 feel that this has been my best year at Bremen so far. I hope next year is just as great. I’m proud to be a member of the Bremen Class of 1987.” Tom Ramsey I’m very proud to be a part of the Class of 1987. Our class has great incentive for learning and spirit. That's the way people at Bremen are and I’m proud of it. Mike Me Namara I hope that my Senior year is better than this one. I had fun this year with great friends for 3 years now. I like my classes and I have fun in all of them, even in English, believe it or not. I hope to be able to help more people as the year finishes.” Sheila Moore ”1 think this year has been great, but then again how could it not be great when you are surrounded by people of such great quality that we have in the class of ’87. Nelson Edwards ”The 85 86 school year was really awesome! The Junior class showed a lot of spirit and worked very well together! I’d like to thank all of the people who helped make Bremen what it is. Bremen isn’t just a school, it’s the people who go here.” Melanie Butzow JUNIOR DIVISION 143 Gladys Ambers Jonna Arseneauit Brian Baker Pamela Banser Tina Bard Geneva Bayless Melissa Beck Tonya Bibbs Lisa Bielema Vickie Blakemore Tracy Bleker Susann Bogdalek Wendy Bonneau Raymond Boros Tim Boyd Karen Brady Lori Breckinridge Richard Breen Julie Brickley Louis Brooks Rita Brown Edward Bullock Tiffany Bullock Chris Burke Collen Burke Roger Burns Clarice Burts Melanie Butzow Neal Caauwe Marc Carter Paco Castaneda Monica Centers Patricia Chaney 144 Juniors What a group? Suzi Hammer- ”1 realized that in order to be happy and content, I must treat others the way I want to be treated. 152 Heather Smith- This year has been really great! I have joined sports and enjoyed myself. I also got closer with all my friends . Casey Hogan- This year has been really fun! Making the BB Cheerleading squad was the best, and becoming better friends with Les (Leslie Ota) and Demps (Linda Dempsey)! I’ll never forget the one and only MR. REYNOLDS. Chuck Salamone- The best thing that happened to me this year was making new friends and getting better grades in all of my classes. Linda Dempsey- This year has been especially GREAT because the Girls’ Swim Team came in 6th in Conference and broke 14 swim records. Secondly, we won the Overall in SPIRIT WEEK! Kim Rockway- Spirit Week was the best because we took the Overall trophy. Also, cheerleading was a blast and I had a chance to become friends with a lot of people because of that. “As I look back at the past year, I think it was one of the most memorable years the class of ’88 will have here at B.H.S. Winning the overall class trophy showed that we worked hard and well together as a team. Now in our second year of high school, we have proven to ourselves that we can get what we want if we strive and work hard for it. We’re all hoping for even better times to come as Juniors next year. -Craig Donofrio Sophomore Class President SOPHOMORE DIVISION 153 Christina Beck Jodie Berkes Lori Bielema Beverly Biller Jeffrey Black Suzanne Bogusz Jerry Bonapart Timothy Bonneau Janice Booth Susanne Bostrom Denise Bowman Daniel Bradley Lynette Bresinger Tim Broadhurst Mike Buergermeir John Burgher James Burnson 154 SOPHOMORES Rose Maria Alina Betty Allen Corey Allen Scot Allred Mark Anderson Karen Armor David Arndt Frederick Auston Merry Bacon Dawn Baker Jarold Baker Michael Baker Bruce Barta Michael Baumstein Elizabeth Beaty Joanne Beaty of the sophomores with their first place float. I--------------------------------------------------- - On these pages, you’ve seen some of the many ■ l ways Bremen students have expressed their indi- ■ viduality. In today's society, anything goes, so why I not be a Trend-setter instead of a Fad-follower? I Looking your best means feeling your best, so I promote your greatest feature: YOU!!! Make your move on the beach in Hurraches. Only The Suave Survive! 'Rehearsals T re Maestro Henry Mazur came to B.H.S. to give a lecture to our gifted students. After Maestro’s lecture, he asked if Bremen had a chorus. I said ’yes’ and he said he’d like to hear them. The boys had just arrived so I asked them to sing their contest piece. After they finished, Maestro Mazur said that he wanted them to sing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra next season. Thinking he was joking, I said ’ok’. He wasn’t joking and the rest is history! The performances were on March 10 April 21. — Otis Branch The Chicago Symphony's Associate Conductor, Henry Mazur, discusses a technical point with Mr. Branch, as they prepare the Male Ensemble for its debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Branch plays the score as Maestro Mazur notates his interpretation. Close scrutiny is the way Maestro Mazur works. 194 SYMPHONY The ensemble finally sings as Maestro Mazur oversees its performance. SYMPHONY 195 PERFORMANCE From this close-up of Bremen Male Ensemble, we recognize in Row 1: Tim Scarver, Soloist, Jones Johnson, Soloist, Shawn Sutton, James Rodriquez, Bobby Wyche, James Tate, Soloist, Ransom Rodriquez, Matt Sendra, Adam Dorsey; Row 2: Erik Lubek, Kevin Gonzales, Daryl Malone, Donald Mentink, Jerrill Flournoy, Roger Spencer, Soloist, Robert Dorsey, Soloist, Scott Cloud, Kim Dilworth, Brian Mohr; Row 3: Jack Lowe, Robert Polk, Andre Jordan, John Wells, Vernell Eubanks, Vincent Richardson, Anthony Sullivan, Edmond Jackson. Mr. Branch takes a well-deserved bow along with Maestro Yampotsky. The ensemble received a standing ovation. Finally, we get to see the Bremen High School Male Ensemble with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Russian Conductor, Victor Yam-polsky is directing. From our box seats, we get to see the Magnificence of Orchestra Hall. Chicago Champs Visit Bremen We're so bad we know we’re good, Blowing your mind like we knew we would, We’re not here to start no trouble We’re just here to do the SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE”. And so they did with the enthusiasm of everyone. By the time January 26th arrived, Bears' shirts, buttons and hats were seen everywhere. Even the Art Institute and the Picasso had fallen under the Super Bowl spell and proudly wore Bears' headbands and helmets. So there was no doubt that the Booster Club's fund raiser featuring the Super Bowl Champs vs the Bremen coaches would be an event to remember. As the final score reflects, the Braves gave their best effort but were still defeated 67-66. Andy Fredericks. 198 Rookie teacher, Mr. Leffler, displayed an enormous amount of athletic ability including this defensive move on Jim Osbourne. ;urioW 199 Bremen Vs. Good News Bears And Bears Dave Duerson calls upon the all mighty to achieve a victory over our Braves. Speedy Tyrome Keys waits for the rest of the pack to catch up to him. Bremen Braves warm up before, the game to give the awaiting audience a good laugh. Mr. Yukich- Why are you jumping while everybody else is still on the ground? I have had a part in putting together a successful memory of 1986. It is extremely difficult to make such a book and without the talented bunch of hardworking members, it would have never been printed. In early September, we all noticed the first signs of Mrs. Rowe, a note on the office door-'Meeting-Thursday 7:30. We were all anxious. What is the theme? Will I get the exciting pages? Who else is on the staff? But most of all, will it be fun? The answer was yes. Although we worked very hard, we found ourselves proud of the new look the yearbook had. We all became close even though this year's staff has out-numbered any in the past. We had so many ideas and they all seemed to work. We sold candies, flowers, and bunnies to raise money. It was definitely hard work with trying times but we did it and here's the result. I hope you all enjoy it and appreciate the effort. A thanks goes out to all my fellow Arrow workers, most of all Mrs. Rowe, for putting up with us and sticking it out to the end. It's been great and Good Luck next year. Graduation is the time we reflect on these four years of hard work, filled with obstacles, and find that our times spent here were somehow full of inspiration. This enables us to do our best in the future and overcome anything in our paths when striving to achieve our goals. Jeanine Centers Senior Class President m
