Pegasus was born from the sea foam and blood of the slaughtered Medusa, a Gorgon who could turn anyone into stone. Pegasus was caught by Minerva, goddess of wisdom and patroness of the Arts and Trades, and was tamed and given to the Muses by her. According to legend, there was a most horrible fire-hreath-ing monster called the Chimaera. 4 OPES INC This monster caused great ha toe and destruction in the city of l.ycia. The king, lohates. wished to find some hero brate enough to slay the heast. At the time, there was a gallant young warrior in his court whose name was Hellerophon. Pegasus came to Bellerophon knowing of the hardships to folioh. Through the help of Pegasus. Bellerophon easily destroyed the monster Chimaera. Bellerophon was then subjected by the king to more dangerous deeds that he conquered with Pegasus’ assistance. Ioates realized that Bellerophon was in favor with the gods and made him successor to his throne. Bellerophon later became conceited concerning his triumphs and fell out of favor with the gods. W hen he attempted to fly up to the heavens on his own on Pegasus, the god Jupiter made a gadfly sting Pegasus. This caused Pegasus to throw Bellerophon who became lame and blind and spent the rest of his life wandering alone. Pegasus, though, rose to the heavens to become the constellation named after him. The Greeks and Romans celebrated Rites of Spring with feast and merriments, while here at Bremen, Homecoming, Prom and other activities offer a special time for celebration. Children’s parties on Halloween, Christmas door decorations and the Senior picnic are other ways in which Bremen students celebrate. Though Bremen celebrates differently than the ancient civilizations did, and for different reasons, the same joyous atmosphere is achieved. There wasnft much spirit or enthusiasm shown by the crowd, hut those who actually participated, gave their all for the club or class. The pies were still eaten, the tires were rolled and the pyramid was constructed. Confusion was brought on during the pyramid and the juniors lost a perfect time. The seniors had no competition with a star shooter in the basketball throw. Sophomore pie eaters filled and resigned quickly while the freshmen took a sad fourth place finish with the senior class placing first. I was able to learn things about our capitol not taught in textbooks. I gained much from the seminars led by notable figures, the group discussions with students from around the country, and the exciting tours. The seminars provided a chance to hear the opinions of dignitaries as well as to questions them personally. My trip to Washington has been a fantastic learning experience. I encourage all students to try out for it. Rob Kracik '84 The Presidential Classroom was attended this year by Senior Rob Kracik and Junior Julie Hearne. This week-long stay in Washington included an intense schedule of seminars and visits to historical landmarks. Selection for the Classroom was based on essays written by Junior and Senior students. The chosen candidates visited the capitol, Washington D.C., and became more knowledgable about our Nation's government. Abovc-The Great Awakening, an unusual sculpture. Left-A View of our ation's capitol. Below-Represen tali yes from lllnois, including our classmates Julie and Rob. My Presidential week in Washington was a very rewarding experience. During the stay, I visited national landmarks and met many interesting people, ft was really something how different we all were, and at the same time how much we were all alike. In the seminars, I was able to listen and learn from people in politics and hear fellow teens ask important questions. I was amazed that the other students knew so much about our government. Because of this, I came back wanting to learn more about the government format. I highly recommend this educational week in Washington to anyone considering the experience. PROM 43 Many students take part in festivals and rites, or organizations, to occupy their free time. As the ancient Greeks and Romans got together, for rites of spring and festivals for their mythological gods, the students of Bremen organize into groups to participate in dances, fund raisers, or other special events. Organizations are an excellent way to break up the monotony of tlie daily academic schedule and have fun with friends. A break from the regular daily schedule is a universal need. Ancient civilizations did this with Festivals and Rites, and here at Bremen the many extra curricular Organizations serve the same purpose. The seniors worked four long years to gain the respect of Bremen’s faculty, just as the gods and goddesses worked hard for the respect they obtained. The seniors are the highest rank of students at Bremen. They offer leadership qualities which the mortals (underclassmen) can copy and improte upon when they become the gods and goddesses at Bremen High School. The seniors of 1984 share common experiences with past and future Bremen students. After three years of bumping into each other in the halls, the 1984 seniors were well acquainted by the start of their final year, as other classes were. As months went by, these seniors had their Homecoming, Turnabout Prom, as did other classes. Near the end of the year they caught cronic Senioritis, as did other classes. The 1984 seniors were much like every other graduating class. However, the graduates on these pages were a very special group. To them, senior year was unforgettable. They experienced things that no other class ever did or ever will. Each graduate will have his or her own special memories of their final year at Bremen. The seniors may remember the change in Spirit Week, or the announcement of the controversial Bremen Plan, or the White Sox winning the pennant at the beginning of the year. Of course, each student has their own personal memories of high school. Though the graduating class of 1984 was similar to other graduating classes, it was the best to many 1984 graduates. 1984 will live in many minds as “The year I graduated from Bremen High School. Time went on, and fear turned to enjoyment. Freshmen year was a time of learning. As sophomores, losing the Overall Trophy by I point was upsetting until doomsday struck the faculty in the Tug. Junior year matured our friendships and prepared us to be leaders. Senior year proved to be exciting with the survival of rules and regulations. We won the Float, but were still looking toward to Spirit Week. Prom will always be remembered because some will never wear a tuxedo or extravagant dress again. Senior year was a time for relationships and experiences that will always be remembered. I wish you good luck and hope your future is as successful as your Graduation. Being editor of the Arrow is one of the best memories will ever have of my years at Bremen. Even though being on Arrow took a lot of hard work, the fun I had made up for it all. Working together, plus aid from our advisors Mrs. Rowe and Mrs. Tisoncik, made being on Arrow fun. I made so many good friends over the past four years that I probably would have never even got to know if I wasn V on Arrow. hope everyone enjoys this book as much as we enjoyed putting it together. I want to thank my staff for all the time and devotion that they put into this book. Also, a special thanks to Mike Gorz for all the beautiful artwork he created throughout this book. You all did a great job and Vm very proud of you and this book. Styles were influenced by many different things. The movie “Flashdance” inspired a torn Sweatshirt that was very popular. A mild form of “punk” was also present. “Sweats” became dressier and were considered everyday wear. All around, the styles of 1984 were very comfortable and wearable, which helped their widespread popularity. On the following pages are examples of the various styles. Above left-Chris Chenoweth-sleeveless, low-cut arms. Above-Well, Ellie Xleenan makes up her own styles. Above right-Steve Hearne-pinstriped shirt and leather tie.
